Zipsrifle
I actually was pleasantly surprised by the OSU fans I ran into last week. I heard from a few people that they are trying to clean up their image after all the rioting and the bad reputation they built up over the years. I do have to say, they are VERY preoccupied by Michigan in Columbus. Again, people like OSU because they win. It's easy to root for a winning team; you don't get harassed by anyone and you feel good about being part of something successful. What gets me is how high the expectations are for these programs. Cooper was run out of town because he couldn’t beat Michigan. UofM has 2 losses, and Lloyd Carr is all but gone. Joe Pa, after spending his life building the program, was almost canned a few years ago. My question to the fans of these major schools is do you hold yourself to such perfection? I have to admit I like seeing them squirm when they lose though.Bottom line, if we want people to wear Akron stuff in Akron, we need to win. Period! skip-zip
If we want to gain ground on Ohio State for fan attention in Ohio, it won't happen by just winning game alone. We could be a good MAC team for the next decade and many people will still be saying, "Oh, Akron had a game this weekend"?It's all about getting ourselves in a situation where we look competitive on a NATIONAL level. This is why performances like we had last weekend are so important. Until we reach the status of teams like last year's Boise State team, or the Marshall teams of a few years ago, the gains will only be minimal.I remember standing in line at one of the Portable Toilets in a parking lot at Ohio State, and I was talking to a guy who appears to be a pretty knowledgable college football fan. But then he asked me, "So, you're knickname is, The Zips? Is that right"?, and I said "Yes". And he said, "So what conference do you guys play in?".This is the thought process of the majority of Ohio college football fans. My best friend is a college football junkie, and an Akron graduate, but only about ONCE a year will he ask me, "So, how is Akron doing this year". He obviously isn't paying any attention himself. You'd probably even be surprised at the number of college football fans in Akron alone that do not even know that Akron won the MAC title in 2005. Many might not even be aware that Akron and Ohio State are even in the same division. But this I can tell you for sure....If November rolls around, and we're sitting in the top 20 in the AP poll, EVERY college football fan would notice. Why does Akron play schools like that when they know they can't win. (refering to BCS schools)2.Oh they are D1?
flipthezip
We are not going to turn others around until we buy into Akron ourselves. Last week at Ohio St., I ran into people from Akron wearing OSU gear. Even saw a student who works at the JAR in an OSU jersey. I had a fight with my own sister who has 2 degrees from Akron because she found it necessary to also wear buckeye earrings with her Akron shirt. My brother-in-law also is an Akron grad and yet they let my nephew go to the game wearing an OSU jersey. Mind you, it is hard and pointless to fight with a 4 year old if thats what he wants to wear when all you want to do is have a good day watching football. But the point is that this mind set that OSU is "The" team to root for as a resident of Ohio is ingrained. We are the ones coming late to the party (DIA since 1986). The battle will be tough but we clearly are gaining ground or we wouldn't have the hundreds of rants on this site about it.What we need to do to kick start what we wish to see happen - servers or others in Zips gear at our favorite game watching venues is to take shirts to them. Come together as a nation, pick out a spot we are going to hit for the game, and take Zips gear with us and ask them to wear them or take our $$$$ elsewhere. Rome wasn't built in a day. But hopefully our stadium is built in less than 2 years.Keep voting for Zippy. Let's go Zips today and bring us that Big 10+1 win we should have got last week.
