g-mann17
Directly from an e-mail I received...I have a suggestion. Why don’t you call the other stations and ask them if they had a photographer and a sports reporter at the Akron-Can't State game today. I’ll be the answer is “no” or simply laughter. NewsChannel 5 has covered 2 Akron games this year and now 2 Can't games… and the season is only 4 games old. Don’t tell me we don’t care. We were live inside The Rubber Bowl at 11:30am this morning. The guys across the street at WKYC have a NOON newscast… were they there? No. We gave Akron and Can't State some love during our College football pregame show, our post game show at 7pm… and tonight after the football game, another 2 minutes out of a total of 6 minutes in the sportscast. Stop letting the other stations fool you with “smoke and mirrors”… and they’re old, never-updated news from one newscast to the next.Should we all be offended? zen
I don't think there was anything 'offensive' about that. But it is a typical poor-mans argument that avoids responding to the complaint by both rationalizing ("hey, atleast we were there") and by diverting. Did you notice he didn't address at all why they cut away?
g-mann17
I just found it offensive because the entire tone of the e-mail was "Here you go bum, here's 5 bucks, even though I have ignored you every other day for all the time I have known you, but since I was given a free lunch today I don't need this 5 dollars anymore so you can have it, and oh wait, I need 50 cents of this because I have to buy my Plain Dealer because it's more important then you." ZachTheZip
Why don’t you call the other stations and ask them if they had a photographer and a sports reporter at the Akron-Can't State game today. They didn't, and you know damn well that you wouldn't either if you didn't have to honor the contract to broadcast it.NewsChannel 5 has covered 2 Akron games this year and now 2 Can't games… and the season is only 4 games old. Don’t tell me we don’t care. How many OSU games have you covered? All of them, right? You didn't even bother to mention Akron except for when the played OSU and this game. You couldn't even mention the scores for the other games for Akron and Can't? That would take up about 10 precious seconds in your sports segment. We gave Akron and Can't State some love during our College football pregame show, our post game show at 7pm… and tonight after the football game, another 2 minutes out of a total of 6 minutes in the sportscast. That's only because you happened to have footage from the game since you broadcast it earlier. You wouldnt even have mentioned it if you weren't there. Plus, your precious Buckeyes didn't make a very interesting story, and the Indians lost.Stop letting the other stations fool you with “smoke and mirrors”… and they’re old, never-updated news from one newscast to the next. What the hell is that supposed to mean? I get all my important "news" from the internet. Instant reporting and commentary. I see all sorts of "news" hours or even weeks before you ever know of its existance. Apollo Creed
If you guys think anyone outside of Akron actually cares about Akron football, you are kidding yourself and it shows on this thread. Be grateful they gave you 2 minutes. OSU is bigger in AKRON, of course they are going to get more coverage from a Cleveland news station. Here's the thing, though: OSU is bigger in Akron because the media makes it bigger. Then they use that as an excuse to continue covering OSU more, pointing out how many people watch OSU on TV or read about it in the newspapers. It's their cycle, but they won't acknowledge it. Quickzips
Got almost an identical e-mail from Misson. The guy's pretty much a tool. Major ego trip. Looking for any kind of praise he can get from anyone he can get it from. He basically wants us to bow down to him and his network for even giving a little consideration to the teams. If we refuse to comply he just goes about patting himself on the back for doing it anyways. Got another e-mail back from someone else in the sports department which was much more polite. Didn't do anything other than say that she was sorry, but at least she didn't come back yelling at me for their mistakes.
Big Zip
I must have wrote to a different part of the station -- here is my response. Thanks for writing in with your thoughts. There were many viewers disappointed, but NewsChannel5 had an agreement with ABC to begin carrying the game at 3:30. Our apologies that you missed the ending. skip-zip
I'm a little surprised that a professional would respond by implying that the other stations would have laughed at us if we asked them to cover a game. That tone comes off as being very demeaning, and very childish. After all of these developments over the last couple of days regarding this broadcast, I sort of feel like the family dog at the dinner table right now.....I got to eat a couple of scraps of food off the floor after everyone else had eaten, and they think I should feel priviledged to have received such a feast. Dale Carnegie
Everything they did was very unprofessional. They did not do a good job handling the complaints, period! Zip fans need to make a loud statement here or else things like this will continue to happen in the future. It is time to make this community hear you. Zipsrifle
Glad to see these responses here on the board. Get this stuff out there for the rest of the fans to see. Gets me fired up that we are just the red headed step child to them. The more people e-mail, the more they will realize just how many people care about the game and not make that mistake again! bobbyake
I wrote to Eric Mansfield of AkronCantonNewsEric, I'm writing this to let you know of a situation that has a lot of Akron residents upset. On Saturday, the Akron-Can't game was broad casted on WEWS Channel 5. With a minute left in a very exciting game, they switched to a very boring pregame for the OSU game. It wasn't until 9 minutes later that the OSU game actually started. Everyone I know is very upset about this. I would greatly appreciate it if you could report this story sometime this week. It would give your newscast a lot of respect for sticking up for the Zips. If you do this, I promise to return the favor by spreading the word about how great AkronCantonNews is. I'll even create a fan group for AkronCantonNews on facebook, which would get over 300 students to join in a heartbeat. I appreciate your time. His managing editor will never let him do it.Eric's a great guy (for a UD Flyer, LOL)...so don't hold it against him if he doesn't do it.It's really not his decision. The best we're going to get is what the Beacon did. bobbyake
If the best we get is what the Beacon did, we did a horrible job sticking up for our school.George Thomas calls us "Little Boys," and says will never be anything in his article. The least we could do is incourage others to avoid watching Channel 5 news. In order for us to do that, we have to make noise.
Zipgrad1990
I got home from the Zips game and wanted to watch the end of what I hoped would be a good matchup - Mich vs Penn St.. I was very disappointed when I found it to be OSU blowing out NW.Later when I heard CH 5 cut away early to telecast this garbage game (everyone knew OSU would crush NW), I was shocked. I guess the only way to actually guarantee you will see a Zips game is to be at the game.Thomas' 'Big Boy Football' comment is terrible. He should not be allowed to write anything except for his beloved Buckeyes.
bobbyake
Hi Robert, I’m with ya!!!! I was watching Saturday and couldn’t believe that TV5 did what they did .. couldn’t believe it … just to cut to local commercials followed by a national pre-game and then more national commercials … the zips-flushes were over before the OSU kickoff … and this crap about “well, if we didn’t switch, all the OSU fans would have called complaining” is just stupid .. I’ll try to drop a dig into the show this week, where I can .. but we can’t run it as a full fledged story unless the U of A or Can't State were to file some complaint to make it newsworthy or something .. but I’ll at least blog about it too .. Stay in touch .. and yeah, WEWS deserves all the bad press they get .. EricEric Mansfield is the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! skip-zip
I wrote a pretty detailed e-mail, about Can't and Akron being the only two "major" colleges in their viewing area, etc., etc. etc.All I got back was a short response saying that they had a contractual obligation to switch to ABC at 3:30pm. According to the Beacon Journal article, it was THEIR decision to cut away to the other game. I'd like to know the truth.

Big Zip
Interestingly enough I can promise you my response was most likely the first or one of the first into WEWS. I was watching the game at home because i was coaching football at the same time as the first half. Like I said I think I wrote to a different address at WEWS. Misson must be the sports guy this person sounded a lot more rational.
