NEOUCOM to stay in Rootstown

Recommended Posts

http://www.recordpub.com/news/article/2862651Fingerhut announced that NEOUCOM is staying where it is. That tells me that a lot of the crap he was spewing about merging everything together was just a bunch of political grandstanding. He is not really in charge, the committee comprised of representatives from all the regions schools is. They are deciding what is "best" for them. I'm hoping that it turns out like the school system in California or Wisconsin. The individual schools remain on their own, with regional hubs and specialized smaller schools. Akron would be the Northeast regional hub, since it already is classified as the main research school. Can't State would be the liberal arts college, CSU would be the urban and medical college, and YSU would be the mahoning valley regional hub/local college. The only thing missing is a real university in Canton, and I hope that UA will get around to opening a nice branch campus there that is better than Stark State. It's a fairly large market ripe for the picking with no real competition. That would be a huge boost to the University. Also, Fingethut will announce the final plan on March 31st, so keep your eyes and ears open.

Can't already has a regional campus near Canton...just north of the Belden Village area.
That's Stark State. It's a community college run by Can't, like UA's Summit College. I am saying that we need to put an actual branch campus there. It can focus on Steel refining technology (partner with Timken) and chemicals (partner with Ashland). There would be real research done there.

Um, K-ent state has a regional campus there already, it is NOT stark state, Stark State is next to it. Actually the K-ent State Stark campus is one of the largest regional campuses in Ohio, its actually pretty good, Timken already has tons of money invested with it, and Timken has a family member on the board of trustees at K-ent...so I don't think your idea will happen. Also, although I would like to see it, I doubt Akron would be Northeast Ohio's Hub for education, I would see it going to Can't State more than us because they have more infrastructure and money...Wishful thinking though!!

NEOUCOM Board of Trustees moves forward in process of university name change:

At a special meeting held July 27, 2010, the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) Board of Trustees unanimously voted to move forward on the next steps of the process of changing the University?s name.

As you are aware, the University recently underwent a naming and branding review that included focus groups, surveys and extensive interviews with faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as external partners and community leaders. The results of this research were presented to the NEOUCOM Board of Trustees, and after careful and thoughtful deliberation, the trustees decided to move a name forward for further consideration.

The name that was approved by the Board is the Northeast Ohio Medical University.

The new name being presented is one that is very close to NEOUCOM?s roots, and also pays respect to the geographic area that we serve and to our successful educational and research programs in medicine, pharmacy, graduate studies, and community health,? said President Jay Gershen. ?We look forward to getting this name approved by the legislature and further developing the brand as a premier medical university.?

The name change is one part of a multi-phase transformational process the University is undertaking. Other initiatives currently underway include a strategic plan, organizational review and campus master plan.

Next Steps:

1. Before the name change can take place, it must be formally approved by both the Ohio General Assembly and the governor. We are hopeful that this approval can be obtained within the next year.

2. Because a name change is a very large undertaking for an institution that requires much planning, a transition plan will be shared with campus in the coming months.

Your support of this effort is greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry, but this is not the direction the University is going. Nor should it go this direction. UofA can look like UofA and still be a good research institution. We don't need to do what they do in California or anywhere else. The direction is good.

A branch in Stark Co makes no sense when you are trying to attract students to live on your campus.

If they want to do refining technology and chemicals research, fine. Send graduate students to the companies to collect samples and bring them back. Better yet, have the students/professors do the research and then use this thing called "e-mail" to send the results to Akron for study. UofA does not need another "building" 20 miles from campus to pay for and maintain. They have plenty of room in Akron and if they need more, they can take over another vacated building downtown.

Stark State and Can't State-Stark do share some facilities, but Can't State-Stark is most definitely affiliated with the Can't campus, while Stark State is not. Akron should concentrate on Medina County and not worry about demographically challenged Stark County.

+1+1 they haven't even begun to touch the possibilities with MCUC. And Wayne's getting bigger and busier.

Why waste time and money on one of the most depressed parts of the rust belt? When Kant, Stark, Mount U, Malone, and Walsh are already there?

Expand west and southwest, where the money is...

Stark State is expanding into Wayne County with an agreement with the Career Center. They're going to be granting four year degrees with the first two at WCSCC and the last two at SS. UA/Wayne College must have been asleep (or gloating over their expanding enrollment) while this was going on...

Wow! I've been away form the area for quite a while, but some of the changes continue to mystify me! Why, oh why, at a time of diminshed resources would the state start up a SECOND community college in Stark County? What exactly is the reasoning behind having both K.SU-Stark AND Stark State (and what an awful name BTW, seems to signify how "stark" the educational landscape is becoming)??
