RowdyZip
Attendance breakdown...just like last year. About halfway through the MAC season...All numbers are accurate to the best of my knowledge.Columns: Team (Home games played/Home total) Total Attendance, Average AttendanceOhio (8/13) 45,358 [5695/game]Toledo (6/13) 33,290 [5548/game]Can't State (10/14) 35,688 [3569/game]WMU (7/12) 24,874 [3553/game]Ball State (10/15) 35,006 [3501/game]Akron (11/16) 33,636 [3058/game]Miami (7/12) 20,873 [2973/game]Buffalo (7/12) 14,907 [2130/game]CMU (6/11) 10,444 [1741/game]NIU (8/13) 12,254 [1532/game]BGSU (8/13) 10,690 [1,336/game]EMU (8/14) 7,451 [931/game]Zips ranked 6th of 13 in average attendance (3rd, East)Zips ranked 5th of 13 in overall attendance (3rd, East) According to THE NCAA, this has us down 535 per game this year. Not good.I don't much remember how this compares to last year. If anyone wants to dredge up the old thread (if it still exists), that'd be nice. EMU is once again first place for best arena and still struggling to average more than 1,000 fans a game. Ouch.
skip-zip
Not surprised, but dissappointed. This is just what I predicted. Dru and Romeo got some locals interested in Akron basketball that had probably never come to Akron games previously. And now they have probably gone away again. But remember, the Can't State game at the end of the season will probably boost that average a bit, as long as we don't have any meager crowds in between now and then. What's really sad about this 3,000 average is that the no-shows in the lower sections count as attendance, because they have paid for their seats. And I believe "tickets sold" counts as attendance, just like in football. So, in reality, the actual attendance is even lower than this. Also, if I remember correctly, students count as "paid attendance" also, because sporting events are said to be included as part of their fees. At least, that is the way I think it was counted back in my time.
skip-zip
Here's the real puzzling aspect of all of this....OU has the highest attendance average, yet they probably reside in the most poorly populated area of any MAC school, and are the furthest distance from any decent size city.On the other hand, we have SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND people within a short drive of Rhodes Arena. Ok..I've been shaking my head about this for decades. I probably should give it a rest.

skip-zip
Yep, I guess the "it's the only thing there is to do around here" theory has a positive impact on their attendance numbers.
RowdyZip
I've reached my quota for starting threads...and i noticed the previous one on the topic I want to discuss has been locked.Did anyone else notice how Singletary is playing for K-E-N-T again? 1 game suspension for an underage DUI. Thoughts? Does him being back for the March rematch have a bearing on the game?
skip-zip
Let me give you my take, from someone who has coached, and been around coaches for a long, long, time. One of two things happens in these situations...1) Upon his return, the other players look at him as someone who is not as committed as they are, and tend to distance themselves from him, both on and off the court. 2) They rally around him and become his support group for his "problems", believe that it will never happen again (even if it has), and simply forget about the disruption it caused for the team.My guess is, with a MAC title on the line, they will take option #2. Of course, I hope the continuity of their team suffers because of it. And besides that, I think that the coach should be taking much harsher action against someone who has been a problem repeatedly. I don't believe that KD would have someone like this on his team, but maybe the school to the East of us runs their program on a lower standard. Dads weekend was a couple weeks ago and Sibs weekend coming up. They had 10,000 I heard show up during Dads Weekend for the game against Ball State. The students do support the team but if you have 2 home games with over 10,000 at each of those games, that will def. add to your overall attendance #. OU has led the MAC in attendance for many years. Akron basketball was non-existent 5 years ago. Just recently have you turned yourselves into a very good program. Couple that with the fact your arena holds less than our average attendace, and you will find your problem.
