Guest Zip88 Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Beacon Article... Posted on Thu, Dec. 02, 2004 Senior Bowl opens NFL door to Frye Quarterback understands importance of showcase By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal staff writer With the season over and the University of Akron waiting to see if it will play in a postseason bowl game, senior quarterback Charlie Frye already knows he'll be playing in a bowl this season. Frye accepted an invitation to play in the 2005 Senior Bowl Jan. 29 in Mobile, Ala., and becomes just the third player in school history to be selected for the prestigious game. Miami Dolphins All-Pro defensive end Jason Taylor played in it after his 1996 season with the Zips, and current Tampa Bay defensive back Dwight Smith played in the Senior Bowl after his 2000 season in Akron. The Senior Bowl is considered the top postseason game for seniors because of the connection with the NFL. Officials of the game expect more than 700 NFL general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, personnel directors and scouts to attend the week-long workouts and game, which ESPN will televise at 3 p.m. Last year, Marvin Lewis, the coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and Marty Schottenheimer, coach of the San Diego Chargers, were the coaches of the North and South teams, respectively. Frye (6-foot-4, 228 pounds) also had offers to play in the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl but said he is going to decline those offers. ``It's an honor to play in the Senior Bowl because of the connection it has with the NFL,'' said Frye, who is expected to be an early round selection in the April draft. ``I want to make the most of this opportunity.'' On Thanksgiving morning, Frye received the invitation for the Senior Bowl. The roster for the Senior Bowl hasn't yet been released, but Frye is sure to be in some pretty impressive company. He isn't accustomed to sharing playing time, which he'll most likely do for the game. But during the week, he'll have plenty of opportunity to showcase his talent for the NFL brass. ``You're going to need your `A' game all week, every snap,'' Frye said. ``They are going to be watching you all the time, and you have to show them what you can do.''
