Quickzips
What a disappointment. I really HATE seeing anyone associated with our athletic programs involved with this. There's no justification or excuse for it. Seems as though Mr. Brooks is getting a HEAVY dose of reality. In the last year he's gone from a full ride at Niagra to walking on with us to playing pickup games at the jailhouse. I hope for his sake he can get his life straightened out, but unfortunatley it is probably too little too late. The U definitley needs to cut ties with him though. You can't have something like this dragging all the progress this program has made right back down.I know it's kind of selfish, but my initial thought was thank god it wasn't a guy we were going to be relying on this year like Nate or one of the McKnight brothers. Zipmeister
My two favorite passages from the Beacon blurb......1. Brooks is also charged with driving with a suspended license and excessively tinted windows.oh oh, excessively tinted windows.2. His grandmother...........said he has never been in trouble before.well he hit the jackpot his first time out.
zen
2. His grandmother...........said he has never been in trouble before.well he hit the jackpot his first time out.Seriously.But actually, if he hadn't fired his gun, I think his problems would be much much smaller. It's really not too uncommon for some kids to get busted for driving under suspended license or sometimes even fleeing. These are things that could have been worked out and his life would be back to normal in a year or less. It's a shame, but he's gotta face the music. You don't roll out with guns and ski masks looking for an ice cream cone.
Kiel Fleming
You don't roll out with guns and ski masks looking for an ice cream cone. Why hasn't someone come forward with that information before this? Why does it always take a tragic event before the real information comes out?! Think of all the senseless crimes that could have been prevented. OJ heard Nicole Simpson had Fudgicles, Rae Carruth was craving a frosty. Hell, Maurice Clarett was just out looking for a Klondike Bar. /ice cream rant
Big Zip
On vacation today and picked up a USA Today. You'll be happy to know it isn't a headline story, but it is listed in the colleges portion of the sports section. The headline story is Va Tech QB getting his scholarship pulled after getting arrested on felony drug distribution charges. I guess there are times when not being considered a big time school pays off. Rydell does get his time though under the headline of Akron arrest. The story states that "Brooks ran from a car after a traffic stop and fired several times as police chased".

zipdiehard
Did anyone else notice the "lawyerspeak" about Rydell's commitment to the University? Tell me he ain't playing off all the good things about the U lately!
Zippysgotagun
Brooks was a point guard right? Because judging by the fact that he fired several times and hit no pursuing officers, he would have made a bad shooting guard.I know I'll get flamed for this one, but I really couldn't help it...like I said before, if it were a Can't athlete, the jokes would be flying. Zipmeister
We got some more national pub out of the story this morning as Bob and Tom did about a two minute bit. They also commented on the fact that when Brooks shot he hit nothing. They said if he played for an SEC team at least he would have drawn a little net. RootforRoo44
This just sucks. I am so disappointed. He couldn't even outrun the cops, what does that say about team speed, let alone team character. Your post is uncalled for. I know several police officers on the APD and the thought that someone was firing at them with deadly force, and assumed intent to kill, sends shivers up my spine. The fact that the suspect was an Akron athlete deeply saddens me. I'm a former letterman and the allegation that any Akron athlete would do this is horrible news. There is no need to make light of it with a comment about team speed. This just isn't funny on any level!stop being a baby, no one was hurt and it was funny

zippyrifle32
This is the first statement I have seen thus far by anyone from UAhttp://www.akronnewsnow.com/news/itemdetai..._In_Court_Off_THow can anyone still be a student yet not be allowed on campus or be able to attend any University function. Isn't classes a function of the University?on that type of suspension you are not allowed to be on campus, so you are forced to miss class, practices, or any other activities. in the student handbook there is one somewhat vague clause that says if the dean of students feels that students, staff, or property of the university is in danger, they can forgo the usual student judicial process and do an emergency effective immediately suspension. the big wigs in the administration (especially student life) then have a hearing to decide whether it is permanent or they may come back and say the student is no longer suspended contingent upon something (rehab, therapy, etc). If it is decided that the student may return to school, the student will also have the aid of the administration to work with any academic things they might have missed. So technically, they are a student because they still are enrolled and stuff, whereas expulsion would mean they're not allowed back at all. It can be used as a step on the way to expulsion, or it could be used as a warning to get the student to get the help they need (whatever that might be). Given the circumstances of the situation though, it merits swift and immediate action instead of waiting around for the student judicial affairs stuff which is normal for student code of conduct violations.
