Rename Vine Street?

Recommended Posts

First, in keeping with the theme of incorporating tradition into the new stadium, does anyone else think that Vine Street (the street that runs east-west between the stadium and field house) should be renamed to honor and accent a traditional aspect of the football program? I was thinking something along the lines of Heisman Avenue.Second, why does the Heisman biography on the official website not mention Akron or Buchtel College as a school in which he coached? A motivated ZipsNation member should email the organization and suggest the amendment.http://www.heisman.com/history/john-heisman.html

It may not even be a street when they are done with it. I dunno, but wouldn't it be right to incorporate it into the promenade surface that much of the campus is done with? It's going to adjoin with the "living room"
Actually, the living room is going to be between the student union and the soccer field where Carrol Street used to run through. I think Vine Street is staying right where it is.I'd love to see all roads leading into campus renamed with something related to a prestigious aspect of the university.

So does anyone think renaming the street is a good idea?
Well, it is the only street that runs through the main area of campus not already named after someone important to UA (Buchtel, Carrol) or referencing it (University Avenue, College Street, and Hill Street ["Hilltop High" references here]), so sure. Not sure what we should name it, but it might be a good idea to have it changed.

I always thought the Akron/Hesiman connection was a little tenuous. The guy coached here for one year out of a 30+ year career. He's really more of a historical footnote to Akron football than a true legend. I keep meaning to see if there's a Heisman biography at the library so I can find out a little more about his year at Akron.I would suggest Proenza Place, but the guy is going to end up with a major building named after him, not just a street.

Heisman was here slightly over a year (5-2 first season; 1-0). The board ran him out because they felt it was more important to focus on academics. To dismiss him as a footnote is foolish. That would be like Milan, OH acting like Edison never existed since he was only born there and most of his inventions were created in his lab in New Jersey. If you have a tie, any tie, to someone of great importance, you play it up. To that extent Heisman St, from Spicer into the heart of the athletic complex speaks volumes to the legacy that is Akron Football. On a side note, I think it is also important to have a statue honoring some great heroes of the University of Akron Athletics. Right now I can thing of Heisman, and Taylor (since he is a future hall of famer). But that is just football.

Why doesn't the University put it up for bid, and the highest bidder can have it named after them? Hell, that's the way everything else is going. Why don't we sell the naming rights to the paths through campus??? We sold the name of our stadium to a telemarking firm didn't we??Personally, I like the Heisman name. I agree that we need to play up this tie. Miami sure does play up their ties to successful college FB coaches that won elsewhere.

but...but... that path is shown running down between the student wellness center and the baseball field toward vine street.... I dunno.OutdoorLiving.jpg
This would be a sweet place to have a pep rally or as a concert stop on the game-day march from Guzzetta to the stadium!
There's plenty of grass, so I was thinking it would be a great tailgating spot if the university would allow it.
