I guess I'll post this article here. It could have gone in a number of different threads. The article talks about how Early Signing Day (December 21st) and the Transfer Portal have taken much of the luster off of the traditional Signing Day which has (always?) been on the first Wednesday of February.

One enlightening quote, concerning the impact of the Transfer Portal, from former Zips RB and current Buchtel HC Bryan Williams:

“You've got to tell your players, 'If you get an offer and you feel as though that that's the school where you want to be, hey, man, you've got to commit to that school because that offer may not be there.' You got it probably in December, and, in January, it may not be there because they've got a guy that they may pull from the portal. So you have to be strategic.”

Great quote. Tracking which offers still stand is near impossible without speaking to the players themselves. To take it even further, the majority of kids getting offers in the 2025 and 2026 classes will need to be re-offered by the time they are seniors.

Had to be PWO, his only offer was a PWO Coastal Carolina, he is 5’10”, definitely not a D1 lineman

Yep, I’m sure he was a PWO. Only official offers were St. Francis and Dayton. Don’t know if we gave him the same opportunity, but I doubt it. I more so posted this because I got a kick out of his film.

Here's an intriguing offer. I'm digging it.

6-6 player from Indiana who looks like he's mainly being targeted for basketball, but MAN he is built like a truck & is athletic as all get out!

    Can't believe that's a high school senior. That's a freaking full grown-ass man 🤯😂

I’m guessing DE. They played him all over the place in high school. Did not look like he was always facing the stiffest competition, but the kid is clearly an athlete. Raw with a load of upside.

    Hudl film here.

ZipsNation didn't respond favorably when the previous staff recruited D3 talent.

Understandably so. Not easy to get excited about a D3 prospect and no staff will have a 100% hit rate. However, if the player has the ability to succeed here, I’m all for it. OL is one of the hardest positions to recruit (especially in the portal). I’d be concerned if we were taking a bunch of D2 and D3 guys, but that isn’t the case.

"*At the end of National Signing Day, any prospect that signs with an FBS program, and we have not evaluated, will be assigned a 5.2 Rivals Rating (RR)."

    Finally! They've admitted it!  😅

Unfortunately, the follow through on that has not been up to par in recent years. I’ve been pushing for every committed FBS player to have a rating regardless of school (probably to the point of annoyance).

To be honest, many high schools don’t have a single player committing to an FBS school. I do think Rivals is right in giving out a load of 2 stars, especially when you read what their definition of a 2 star should be. On a business level that has since become a detriment since 247 and ON3 give out 3 stars like candy, which boosts their views and mentions.

I’ve made it known when I disagree with a rating, but I’m not always right. It’s hard to judge work ethic and how much adversity a player can handle at the college level.

No idea. There are also some players from Hoban that other schools seem to be inexplicably beating us to the punch on. How is that at all fathomable? Within the last couple days even KSUck’s brand new defensive coordinator has posted pics of recent visits to East, Buchtel, and Hoban. Makes me slightly ill.

Really strange. Any chance some type of resentment has built up with those schools and the Akron football program over the years? Not saying it’s happening here, but I have seen high schools blackball coaching staffs before about certain events they felt slighted over. It’s a new staff so I wouldn’t think that would be the case, but IDK.

    Duke decommit. Nice offer list.

Yeah, he’s another interesting one. Clearly has the talent to play at a P5. I do wonder which of the other offers still stand. Miss. State, Liberty, and Jackson State had coaching changes. Duke is probably off the table. Who knows what Vanderbilt, MTSU, and Campbell’s boards look like at this point. I’d have to think we are in a great position to land him.

With EMU ranked 8th in the MAC according to your summary, why do you think they should be #1? Some players ranked lower than you think they should be?

Yeah, I’m just going off the prospects they have committed. I’m still working on getting some ranked and even though all their new ratings will probably be 2 stars, it should bump them up in the team rankings some.

Heres some junior year film on Messiah Blair. He has the potential to become a monster off the edge.

Here’s film on Joe Walker. Not sure if he’ll play WR or S, but either way he’s impressive.

Here’s film on CB Daiquan White. He’s a kid we offered, but didn’t land.

It’s not just a top heavy class either. For example, they also landed two JUCOs we offered. CB Jaheim Jenkins and Ugo Nosike.

I’m not sure if they will be able to pull off 9 wins again though. Despite having a strong recruiting class, they were a veteran team last year and have some holes to fill.

that name rings a bell but we’ve got too many names to keep straight. Who’s this guy?

Long time WR commitment who the staff made every attempt to keep in the fold. After his final visit, he posted his “recruitment was 100% open.” Underrated 2 star who may eventually work himself into some minutes at Ole Miss. He would have had an excellent chance at playing time here, but he should do what he deems best for his college career.

In following football recruiting for about 30 years Delvin Morris is the first player I've seen list himself as an OL/DL/ATH.  Usually the "ATH's" are kids who can play either DB or WR. 😂

And his hudl highlights mostly show him playing the wildcat position on offense 🤣

He's got tremendous feet for being 6-5, 285. Crazy.

Here’s some film of him playing OG. My favorite clips are at the backend starting around the 1:30 mark when he can be seen working in space.

One thing is for sure, the athleticism along the offensive line has greatly improved since JRod took over.

Morris just announced his commitment on twitter. Do we think his recruitment was limited by his off the field incident, is he a developmental project, or a little of both? It looks like his only other D1 (FCS) offer was to Incarnate Word. There doesn't seem to be much out there on him in terms of recruiting profile even.

Probably a little of both. He moves extremely well for someone his size and it’s hard to recruit elite linemen. He fits right in with the size and athleticism of the other OL JRod has recruited. He’s just more raw at this stage.

A list of players that I expect to commit/sign

Terence Thomas- ATH/WR 5'10, 185. Attended Boardman HS class of 22, signed with Purdue but opened recruitment back up during this pas fall. His twitter is not very active but did post saying he has 4 years of eligibility and a redshirt year.

Amin Mimouni- 6'4, 265 OLB/DE, Independence CC, offered and visited Akron on 1/15. Looks like we are only FBS offer, multiple FCS

Delvin Morris- we have pretty much covered him, all signs pointing towards him coming here.

Teremun Lott- 6'0, 170, CB, Inlet Grove HS (FL), currently an Illinois commit but has not signed NLI, offered by new coaching staff early last year. Recently offered by Rutgers

Thomas and Lott would be steals in my opinion. Mimouni would fill a need and has a high upside. Not sure if Morris would be OL or DL, but he’s certainly athletic.
