In the first half, did our offense ever line up in any formations with less than 3 WRs? If so, how did our defense align? All I recall seeing in the second half was either 4 WR sets or 3 WRs with 1 TE. We always had 4 players along the defensive line, but it looked like it was typically with 2 players listed as OLBs lined up at edge positions like DEs and one (or both depending on distance) had the traditional DEs bumped inside as DTs. I noticed Fann was playing DT in the 2nd half and looked disinterested the majority of the time. @LoyalZIP @bigjim @Captain Kangaroo

Not going to pin this one as it doesn’t fit the territory requirements, but how about QB Justin Rogers? I believe JoeMo offered him out of high school, so there is probably some type of relationship there. He hasn’t quit lived up to his potential and would fit this offense perfectly. Might be wishful thinking, but who knows? HS film below. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4483542/581fce23f5605e19502c85ed

Bump for Joey Marousek’s removal. Hopefully, we’ll receive news of a talented QB transferring in soon. -

I can’t speak to Jankowski as I missed him play in the first half, but like I mentioned earlier, I was surprised by the lack of zip Marousek had on his passes. He got the ball to his receivers well enough, but we would likely struggle if he had to play meaningful minutes for an extended amount of time. Irons has the ability to make most throws, but he’s inconsistent. We definitely need another talented QB to compete with Irons for starting minutes. You’re right about the portal. It isn’t going to work out for hundreds of players. Spots are at a premium with the 85 scholarship limit being restored. Sooner or later, the portal will gain some balance as we are seeing an extreme version of transfers this year. -
Unfortunately, it’ll probably get worse before it gets better. NCAA has distanced themselves from NIL and don’t seem to know how - or want to - enforce the confusing guidelines that are currently in place.

Excuse my ignorance as I just started following Akron football closely last season, but who is PCCC? -

I didn’t get to see Jankowski in action, but if Cloud sees any PT besides mop up duty in a blowout then we are in trouble. -
Position Preview (and updates) - Tight End
catdaddyp replied to catdaddyp's topic in Akron Zips Football
The majority of sets I saw in the 2nd half were out of 11 personnel. Usually with the TE lined up at what would be around wingback depth. I don’t recall seeing the TE split out like JoeMo likes to do at times. I don’t think I saw more than 5 or 6 different plays ran in the the second half. Most were just variations off the same play calls. -
Position Preview (and updates) - Quarterback

Agreed. I didn’t see that one coming. As stated yesterday, I thought both Irons and Marousek did some good things in the SG, but both also had their head scratcher throws. It was my first time seeing Marousek live and he didn’t have the kind of zip on his passes I expected, but it was still enough to get the job done. I was firmly in the camp of another QB needing to be brought in after yesterday and before this transfer news. I hate that Marousek is leaving, as he could be serviceable, but on the same side of things we would probably struggle if he had to play too many meaningful minutes. -

I suspect Whigan will get a long look at LT. Gray and Daniels may prove to struggle against the quicker edge rushers we’ll face. I really like the depth on the OL. I only saw the second half, but I didn’t see too much difference between the two OLs as far as production. Like you mentioned, it was mostly passes and very few of the RPOs went for runs. Edit: Forgot to add - Although our QBs looked good at times, I’ve joined the camp about the need to bring in another competitor in that room. Irons may have the arm strength to make most throws, but he needs to be more consistent. -
Position Preview (and updates) - Offensive Line

Not official. I could be wrong, but using context clues. When asked about how the teams were split up today, Moorhead said he tried to keep certain players together for consistency - or something along those lines. Makes the most sense for the OL. It’s common to keep the 1st team OL and 2nd team OL together for the spring games regardless of the format. -

Bump for spring depth chart update. -
Keylen Davis was at the game today and introduced as a 2022 signee at halftime. So probably safe to add him as it sounds like he just wasn’t an early enrollee.

I did see the TD pass to Gaithings. Gaithings beat his man (I couldn’t see who the DB was) and Marousek hung the ball up there too long. Gaithings made a great adjustment and caught it, while being interfered with. He then took it in for the last 5 yards or so. I also saw the TD pass to Hester. It was a similar play - maybe even the same play - that was run for Williams earlier. There was a bust on the defensive coverage as Hester was wide open. He made one guy miss and was gone.

I was able to attend, but only caught the 2nd half. There was so much traffic on the way from Columbus. A few thoughts off the top of my head: - The offense is ahead of the defense at this point, but the defense was mostly playing out of its base. - Offensively, a lot of RPOs and getting the ball out on the perimeter. - Irons and Marousek had their moments, but also some passes that made you scratch your head. - Wiley is very strong in the lower body. He’s elusive, hits the hole quickly, and will run through arm tackles. - Williams looked great catching the ball out of the backfield. He should excel in this offense. - Singleton and Walker looked sharp running routes and have playmaking ability. - Defensively, no one really stood out. I probably missed most of the starters in the first half. Part of that was due to the offense getting the ball out quickly and both OLs looked solid. Blue OL from Left to Right: Daniels, Banes, Georges, Robarge, Williams White OL from Left to Right: Gray, Lyons, Beckman, Kilbane, Chambers - Defensively, we mostly played a 4 man front with either 1 edge standing or both edge players standing. Due to multiple WRs in almost every set, it was usually a MIKE LB and a WILL LB, with the WILL often matched up against the closest inside WR. That’s all I have. I would have loved to have something to report from the first half, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. Spring Game rosters linked below. https://gozips.com/documents/2022/4/29/fb_springprogram2022.pdf

UT’s offense can put up points in a hurry. It’s not a complicated offense, but they move very quickly and put a lot of pressure on the middle of the field - in particular the linebackers and safeties. If we’re not disciplined, the game could turn ugly in a hurry. If we can get through MSU, UT, and Liberty fairly healthy we should have a chance to win every game in the MAC. I’m not saying we will win every game, but with the influx of talent to the roster, I don’t see any reason why we won’t be competitive in every MAC game.

One of those where the physical talent is there, but the rest isn’t clicking. I’m sure there are more to come as I believe 5/1 is the cutoff date for portal entries, unless they want to sit a year.

Woobendy Guerrier hit the portal. Too bad as I thought he might eventually push for starting minutes.

I emailed one of the coaches to see if the game would be televised or streamed. Unfortunately, the answer was no.

Class of '22 Verbal Commits
catdaddyp replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
It’s incredible what JoeMo is doing. Jim Mora is doing something similar at UCONN. Don Brown at UMASS has probably brought in the least amount of talent as far as new head coaches go for 2022. I suspect another QB will be brought in before it’s all said and done. Players are piling into the portal this month as spring ball wraps up across college football. -

Not a knock on either one of those guys. I’m excited to see how both continue to develop. It was more of a compliment to George and what he could potentially bring to the table. -

Yep! Talent wise, he’s now the most talented WR on the roster. Let’s hope the staff brings out the best in George and Adams. They could be dynamic. -
Great job!!

When in doubt, check Twitter. Haha. Looks like Stallworth and Keylen Davis are still in this class, but were not early enrollees.
