The WPIAL is not a conference, it's a governing body much like the OHSAA. Pennsylvania doesn't really have conferences either, they have divisions that schools don't choose to join, you are assigned there based on the size of your school. In PA, there is the WPIAL and the PIAA. The WPIAL is for Western Pennsylvania schools only, and the PIAA is for the whole state. All Western Pennsylvania schools are in both the WPIAL and the PIAA. Schools first compete to win there division in the WPIAL and make the WPIAL playoffs. The championship games of the WPIAL playoffs are played at Heinz Field, and if a team wins that they go on to play in the PIAA playoffs against schools from Eastern Pennsylvania. It's kind of a weird system, but that's how they do things over there.

Scroll down in that article until where it lists the schools. Akron got a TON of WPIAL players, while Can't State got none.......NONE!!!! Are they not recruiting the area or what???

Dustin Basch was not recruited by the Zips or any other D1 school and is heading to Ashland on a partial scholarhship.

He meant as in not next year, but two years from now. I think zff knows what a prop is.

For those of you who wanted JD to take some risked on talented yet troubled players, well, here's one for you. Hopefully he'll pan out well for us, and not just waste a scholarship and cause trouble in the locker room.

Yeah it's kind of like Akron beats Marshall in football and finishes above them in the MAC and yet Marshall goes to a bowl game while the Zips sit at home. Why does our school get no respect??

I didn't realize Jason Taylor was a Senior Bowl MVP as well. How many programs can say they've had 2 Senior Bowl MVP's in a decade??

Acording to an Insider at Marshall close to recruiting: Marcus Raines is headed to Akron Well trust this insider here close to the Akron coaches....he wasn't and will not be offerred.

He has committed to the Zips, but I'm not real high on this kid. I saw some tape on him and from what I've heard he's not even at the same talent level of the kids we already have at LB (which is thin considering Earl isn't coming back). I'd just as soon had him go to Cant State and saved the scholarship.

No not yet. Linebackers coach Matt Wallerstedt, a former defensive coordinator at Wyoming, may be a prime candidate to be leaving though.

That was one of the most ridiculous statements I've read around here in a while. There's a lot of "suburban" kids with problems who I wouldn't want on our team either. It has nothing to do with race. But have no fear. I have inside info. Akron won't be offering this kid (thank God)

Come on GP, I think the Zips are gonna surprise next year. We won't let MTSU slip by us again and Army should be an easy win. If we play Miami late in the year we could very well hold something like a 6-1, 7-1, 7-2 record late in the season. I honestly think that if we have that kind of a record the excitement we generated in the community last year won't even compare to what could happen. All the people of Akron want is a winner. If we win, they will come.

Akron will not be offering Raines. Whew.........

If Akron signs this guy I will be truely embarrassed to be supporting this team. We have enough good players where we don't need this thug. It's unfathomable to me why JD would sign this guy to take the spot of a good clean hard working kid like Brian Howe or Jay Rohr who have waited their turn to shine for the Zips. If we sign this guy, I may just not buy those season tickets I was planning on.

And who are you to say that?? Groza's a good player and an excellent student. He's been behind some guys the last few years, but I'm sure he will be a factor this season. The guy was a beast in high school.

The University may be better served to place ads in the Dealer, especially for football.

I've been attending UA games for ten years now, and I've never sat in a sell out crowd. Anyone think we have a chance of selling out a game next season?? Is the Army game a possibility?? Hey, if we open up with an upset over Purdue, anything's possible.
