Williams' college future uncertain Wednesday, December 08, 2004 Speculation that former Benedictine High tailback Raymond Williams -- recently convicted and then given probation for his role in the death of former teammate Jon Huddleston -- will wind up at one of the open enrollment universities in the MAC (Akron or Toledo) is very, very premature. Does anyone at the PD proofread Elton's articles? Huddleston got the same deal as Williams. Lorenzo Hunter got killed. I guess that's close enough for Elton. Some beat writer.

Jacksonville Hoops Suffers Crushing Blow
zipboy replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
For my money, the most consistent shooter on the team is DP. We need to get him more touches. -
I listened to the 2nd half of the YSU game. At the college level, it can be entertaining and I try to make it down for a game or 2. Will the Zips ever turn it around? Kennedy gets a pass for another 2 years. She inherited nothing. Last years team did a little better than expected and they were competitive. What worries me is that the FR coming in this year don't seem that much better than what came in 2 years ago. At least when Owens and Hipsher took over horrible programs, there was a noticeable difference in talent level 2 years later. I hope she can turn it around. She has local ties, carries herself well in interviews, and seems to be genuinely liked.

I did not stay up, but everyone's posts sum it for me. Makes you wonder what really does happen behind closed doors.

Frye MAC MVP, JD is Coach of the Year
zipboy replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Interesting in the preseason, Elton picked Akron for 3rd in the East behind Marshall and Miami. Guess he thought they were expected to win it too. Hey, didn't the Beacon guy pick Can't over Akron? -
While originally I thought it was far fetched, Big Zip has a good point. If the next 2 at larges from the MAC get good bowl bids, and the MAC/Akron guarantee to cover so much in tickets, why would they not take us? Who cares if Marshall brings an extra 500 people? A 6-5 Marshall team is not wetting too many people's appetitites around the country. And Akron would put a much better showing in for the conference. Marshall fell apart at the end of the year. Come on, they barely beat WMU.

The sad thing is Pitt would probably finish 4th in the MAC and they go to a BCS game??

Good post ZP. My first impressions . . . We are out of basketball purgatory. I got dizzy watching these guys run up and down the floor. No lead will be safe against us and no lead for us will be safe. A big concern coming into the year was having someone else spell Dru. Collins played well yesterday. Joyce got to rest and he played some 2. Dru is the only guy we can't afford to lose. He is the glue. As ZP said, this team is in shape. 10 guys who will get 10+ minutes per night. A lot of good role players, someone different can step up every night. DP did not look too rusty. When Hampton cut it to 7 mid 2nd half, McFadden and DP hit some big shots. It's nice to have veterans who know what to do. Was anyone else happy not to hear Triangle! with about 8 minutes left? Isn't it refreshing to not hear about a new system, guys getting used to each other and don't expect things to jell until March 1st? This team should be a lot better another month from now. And they ain't too bad now. Middleton impressed me tonight. He has a quick first step. Bubba was off in warmups and it carried over to the game. Still, he doesn't hurt you out there even if he is not shooting well. Nice game by Romeo, 7 points but very active. Glad to see he keep his cool this year. J Wood, all MAC possiblity? We sure seemed to have a lot more motion and ball movement running the non motion offense. Best of all, it was FUN. Best $17 I have spent for a basketball game in a long time. I like the spacing of 3 scholarship kids in each class excluding Dials. Looking forward to watching the game on the tube Wed night. It would be nice to get a road win. Northern Illinois will be tough and Wright State is playing well. Go ZIPS!

South Florida bites the dust!!!

If we get it, I am in except for possibly Hawaii. That is a hard one to do on Christmas Eve. F Marshall. They may bring 1000 people to Boise and we would bring 500, big deal. This year, Charlie Frye is the marquee guy. Come on MAC, get Akron in.

Just signed it.

CK, I am not sure how the rules work, but I believe that Williams has not graduated from high school yet. I think that he is 1 class short. So if he gets his GED, does next season count as his sit out year?
-
I have no inside knowledge, but saw that the Colorado AD was fired um resigned a few days ago. Does MT look into it? I hope not. Too much good stuff is happening now.
-
If we can get a 2 for 1, do it in a heartbeat. I am sick of 0 for 1 with every school. Could the Can't game be Sept 1? I hope not, make it the first MAC game, not the first game. We need to get our new line and QB settled.

Akron did not have the talent BG had when Myers took over. There is still a long way to go. ZP is right, we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Hopefully Akron builds itself up enough that if and when JD is that hot of a commodity, he may stay longer than expected. Bob Pruett is a great example. He spurned "larger" schools in the past to stay at Marshall. But it would be nice to have a coach leave for once because he was recruited not that we needed to dump him. Is Bob Huggins the only guy you can think of where this was the case?

For Ray's sake, I hope that he goes far away from Cleveland. He needs to get his life in order. If he comes to Akron, he won't play next year anyway. He was going to be a prop 48 kid at WV. My guess is that the rumor is true. Ted Ginn Sr, the Glenville coach, has been looking out for Ray. Ted and JD are pretty tight. If Ray comes in, stays clean for a year and makes grades, he may be suiting up in 2006. By that time, a lot of this buzz would have died down. Hopefully Javon Ringer is slotted to be our #1 RB in 2006.

Missed the game, I will be there Saturday. I heard Dambrot say last week that Milum will not redshirt this year but may redshirt next year. They need some bodies to press and Quade is an athletic kid.
-
I heard one rumor that Ball State will move to the East and BG will stay in the West.

Amen Brother. JD is the real deal.

Great post JP. You hit the nail on the head, Akron played with the intensity, confidence, and skill to win the game. Miami was just a little better. But Miami had to win the game. Akron did not lose the game. How many times did the Zips make a play when they looked out? A few breaks here or there and we might have pulled it out. It was like 2 heavyweights going toe to toe for 15 rounds. Miami had a little more depth, and as you said, they have strong lines. Announced attendance at 17.5K? I thought 3K were in the beer tent alone. I guess it evens out. I put the Marshall attendance at 25K and we announce 30. I put this game at 22 and they announce 17.5. Good days are ahead. More to write later, but what an effort by the whole team. #5 and all played their hearts out and played well. This is the best that I have ever felt at the end of a season. This team really was the one that has layed the cornerstone for the future of Akron football.

Will be there. Great job UAM. Hope you can start promoting bowl packages soon.
-
27-20 Akron.
-
20K. Let's get a big lead so they stick around for 3 quarters.

I like our chances Saturday for several reasons. 1. This team has some big kahunas. They won't beat themselves. Miami will have to take it. 2. JD and staff have been the model of consistency, never too high or too low. From an X and O standpoint, we have some good guys on our side. 3. #5 4. Betts is a good player but tends to make mistakes. And we tend to take advantage of mistakes. 5. Is it just me or does the karma seem right? I would love to see Akron/Miami emerge as the next great rivalry in the East. The league is only as strong as its weakest links. Akron, Can't, EMU, and Buffalo have not pulled their weight for sometime. Akron has the ability and size to become the NIU anchor in the East. After last week, the loss of Marshall to cusa does not seem that bad. One guy I feel happy for is Joe Dunn. He is the Herb Score of Zips athletics. Has anyone seen more tough losses than him? I could just picture Joe on the sideline vs Marshall. "Hey, it's only 28-7, if the Zips get a turnover, recover an onside kick, have the punter fumble the snap, we can win this in regulation." More of us should learn to be as optimistic. A loss to OU and I would have wondered how far have the Zips have come. A loss to Miami, I can stomach. They are a good team. No freebie tickets this week, I think we pull in a legit 20K. That would speak volumes for how far things have come. Looking for a tight ballgame. Zips know how to win, Akron 27-20 in a nailbiter. No regrets, Go Zips!!

That is a Hall of Famer or should I say Flamer?
