Sarah holding her own. Don't know the total score but in this set of targets, she's right in the mix for #2.
-
Video is working......
-
Never shot a Feinwerkbau...... looks like Sarah is doing pretty good! She's at a good pace and seems to be near the top.
-
Video still isn't working, but the target watch is working. I guess I would like to see something with a camera on each shooter and next to them is their target. Also, it would help to label the different numbers on the targets as it takes some deciphering to figure out, even for someone experienced in the sport. Sarah's relay appears to be about to start, good luck to her.
-
I think the first relay is over. The girl from TCU was shooting the lights out..I'm impressed.
-
Well, I can see the targets, but I don't see Sarah's and I can't get the video.....I'll keep trying..
-
I see a common theme with these stadiums. 1) Mountains2) WaterSo you want the new stadium under the Y-Bridge I see.....

I only watched the 2nd half, but I have to say I think we stole one again. Did we deserve it...not gonna say, just glad we made it. Kool is amazing, nice game WMU, it could have gone either way tonight and I hope you guys keep playing somewhere.
-
Thanks for the link. Man, I don't know that much about BB but can we maybe try to run a play instead of just shooting off a 3 or having one guy drive to the hole? D. Kool is freaking amazing! Glad Zeke is in there, he's gonna be a handful in the upcoming years as it looks like he's putting on some weight.

Here is the press release of the Teams success this weekend at the USCGA. Congrats to the team and I will be one of the persons tuning in on-line next weekend to watch the Sarah Benjamin at the NCAA Championship Match! Good Luck!PRESS RELEASE----------------------------------------------------------------The University of Akron Varsity Rifle TeamDate: March 6, 2010Event: Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference ChampionshipsLocation: US Coast Guard Academy, New London, CTAkron Rifle Wins MAC Championship!Stein and Benjamin are Top Guns at ChampionshipAkron 2282, Navy 2271For many years The University of Akron rifle team has been a member of the Mid Atlantic RifleConference (MAC), the largest rifle conference in the US. Teams are placed in categoriesbased on their match averages ranging from Master, through Expert, Sharpshooter andMarksman. The Zips have been in the master class for many years going head to head withthe perennial powerhouse, Navy. For what seems like an eternity, the Zips have finished #2in the MAC behind Navy. However for the past couple of years Akron has been narrowing thegap. The hard work and extra efforts put forth by this year’s Akron team have finally paid offas the 14th ranked Akron Zips have ended the rein of the #6 ranked Navy by claiming the 2010MAC smallbore rifle title. The Zips smallbore team score of 2282 not only won thechampionship, but also shattered the school record of 2279 set way back in 2006. “When thescores posted and Navy coach Bill Kelley congratulated me, I must admit I stood there inawe,” states head coach Newt Engle, “Navy has been putting up some big numbers allseason, but so have we. Today is the day we have been working towards for quite sometime.”Leading the Zips to victory, sophomore Ryan Stein led the chargein smallbore rifle with an impressive 577 out of 600. Stein’s scorenot only helped win the title, but earned him the top gun award inthe smallbore championship. Sophomore teammates Zac Szaboand Sarah Benjamin fired like 570’s with junior Brittany Jonesrounding out the top 4 for Akron with her 565. “For the wholeseason we have been trying to get our smallbore under controland of all the places to do it, none better than the last match of the year at the MACchampionships,” states Engle.A MAC air rifle title was not in the cards for Akron this year with Navy pulling ahead of Akron2313 to 2282, but Akron still earned high honors. Zips hotshot sophomore Sarah Benjamin litup the board winning top gun at the championships by posting her 584. Teammates BrittanyJones (571), Ryan Stein (566) and Beca Gerevics (561) rounded out the Akron squad withalternate Luke Nelson (574) posting a new career best score. This match is a good warm up for Benjamin who only days beforethe MAC championship was selected to represent Akron at the 2010NCAA Championships held at Texas Christian University. This willbe the second year in a row Akron has earned an invitation to theNCAA’s. Benjamin feels she is tuned up and ready to prove shehas what it takes to be a collegiate champion. Coach Engle states,“We have been red hot with the air rifle’s for quite a while andcooled off a little today. However, Sarah in great condition anddefinitely ready to take on the challenge she will face next week inTexas.”This will conclude the regular season for the Zips but all eyes will be on Benjamin as shetravels to Texas next week to do what it takes at the NCAA’s. An internet web address isbeing developed which will make it possible for dedicated fans to log on and watch the NCAAchampionship live on the web starting at 9am Saturday the 13th of March. Sarah is scheduledon the 9am relay, firing on point 19, with the air rifle finals at 2pm. The finals are the top 8competitors brought together for 10 final shots in front of an arena full of cheering spectators. No pressure there for an experienced athlete like Benjamin who had done finals before andthrives on the excitement. The web address for this event will be sent to you as soon as it isavailable.A computer glitch with the new electronic targets at the academy has not allowed a release ofall the scores yet. Complete results will be sent in a separate message as they are madeavailable.NEWTNOTE:And that is right, this is a big one. The regularseason is over, but we are not quite done yet. However, I must start saying thanks now so Idon’t forget anyone. First and foremost ourparents and friends. You truly (and I meanthis) make us the envy of the conference. Atevery match the team is supported by yourpresence and generous contributions of foodand snacks. We can never express how muchyou have done to make this season such asuccess. And the team. You all are the best! Ihave never been so proud of how well a teamhas represented Akron. Not only scores, butsportsmanship and networking with the otherteams. You should hear the enviouscomments I get from the other coaches. You’re destined for greatness! Thanks fortaking me for the ride. Now let’s all get readyfor the Sara Benjamin show.

I must be reading something different than you. The gozips article says nothing about Benjamin getting an invite to NCAA's. That article is about all conference in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) and the NCAA website does not have her listed as an individual qualifier. Where are you getting this information?Hmmm....I know I read this last night on gozips.com but now it's nowhere to be found? I was excited to see it and the wife and I were talking about the strides the program made. I wonder if someone made a mistake at GoZips.com and the old switcheroo was pulled.... that's all I can think of.
-
Apparently Sarah Benjamin got an invite. Good showing for the Zips. Two years in a row we've sent shooters to the NCAA National Championship! Hopefully Sarah can pull off an upset like Jenna did last year. Congrats!http://www.gozips.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_...TCLID=204896904

OK got to start out with this observation. Anybody else thinking about taking up Biathlon after watching the olympics 'cause I sure am?! I really got the shooting bug back after watching that! I've got the shooting thing down, and I need to lose a few lbs. The problem is I don't know how to X-ski and then finding time. Anyway, the Zips shot the WIRC and had an amazing jump in their air scores. Back in the day, we were happy to top 1500, these guys crushed that score putting up an impressive 1552 out of 1600. They won Air and came in 3rd in SB. I don't know if there was an overall champion, but Akron, overall, would have come in 2nd. Hope the team can get back to routinely beating the Buckeyes in both guns.NEWS RELEASE--------------------------------------------------------------Akron Rifle Takes Conference Title AgainStein and Benjamin set the pace and shatter school record! The stage was set. All season long the Akron hotshots had been running neck to neck with Ohio State and Morehead State of KY. The monthly postal scores fired by each team showed results usually separated by a mere hand full of points. Going into the shoulder to shoulder WIRC championship match this weekend in Michigan, OSU was the favorite with Akron and Morehead about even for second. When the last shot was fired, the targets scored and tabulated, Akron walked away with a surprising and well earned air rifle conference title. In the air rifle division this championship was all Akron. OSU’s Amanda Furrer (392) took top gun immediately followed by Akron’s best, consisting of sophomore Ryan Stein (391), sophomore Sarah Benjamin (390), and junior Brittany Jones (388). The performance by Stein equals the school record in the 40 shot competition and is a new career high score for Stein. Two other Zips, freshman Adam Auclair (373) and sophomore Alissa Martin (375) contributed with new career high marks. The excitement continued to build to the boiling point as the Zips soon learned they absolutely destroyed the nearly two year old school team of 1537 with an unbelievable 1552! This incredible effort by the Zips was enough to upend OSU and bring home another conference championship. In the smallbore rifle division the favored OSU lived up to the expectation by winning this portion of the conference championship. OSU’s red hot freshman Amanda Furrer maintained her Olympic reputation with an unreal 589 out of a possible 600. Morehead’s junior Elizabeth Lyon (575) took second and Akron’s sophomore Sarah Benjamin (573) earned the number three slot. At the end of the day, the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference sponsored the annual awards banquet at the Michigan State University shooting center. Akron shared the spotlight with many Zips earning high honors as listed below. Air Rifle WIRC Championship TeamSarah Benjamin - Named as a member of the 1st WIRC All Conference Air Rifle TeamRyan Stein - Named as a member of the 1st WIRC All Conference Air Rifle TeamRebecca Gerevics - Named as a member of the 2nd WIRC All Conference Air Rifle Team Smallbore Rifle Third Place TeamSarah Benjamin - Named as a member of the 1st WIRC All Conference Smallbore TeamRyan Stein - Named as a member of the 2nd WIRC All Conference Smallbore TeamRebecca Gerevics - Named as a member of the 2nd WIRC All Conference Smallbore Team“This is Olympic rifle the likes of which our school has never witnessed,” states head coach Newt Engle, “The team has been working very hard to put up some big numbers and that all paid off at the right time this weekend.”No rest and more hard work is ahead for the Zips as they prepare for the last match of the regular season when they travel to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut, to compete in the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships. This contest promises to be a high scoring and fiercely fought battle as the top ranked US Naval Academy will be defending their MAC conference title against the number two ranked Zips. But then again, Akron is quite familiar with what it takes to come out on top. The decision will be made March 6th starting at 8am.

Haven't had much time to swing by the nation over the past few months, winter is a busy time for me. Anyway, there have been a few Rifle Matches with some mixed results. Overall, the Zips lost to OSU at the NCAA qualifier though they won the Air Rifle match. Who knows, we might have another Zips competing for an individual National Championship this year. NEWS RELEASE------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Benjamin Leads Akron at QualifierFor the second week in a row the Akron Rifle Team traveled to The Ohio State University only this time to compete in the NCAA Qualifier match. In attendance at the qualifier were Akron, OSU, Rose Hulman and Purdue. At the end of a long day of competition, Akron (4573) finished behind OSU (4606) and ahead of Rose (4438) and Purdue (1310, sb only). These qualifier scores will be added to the average of the three best season scores to determine the final rankings and the invitations to the NCAA Championships in March. This is a good qualifier score for Akron but not enough to move them up into the top 8 teams who will be invited to the Championships. For Akron the day belonged to sophomore Sarah Benjamin. Starting off with smallbore, Benjamin shattered her career best score of 572 set back in 08 with an incredible 578. This performance earned her the second place silver medal behind OSU’s Amanda Furrer (590). Third and the bronze went to buckeye Gina Cheliras (572) and Akron’s Ryan Stein took 4th with his 567. A little further down, but worth noting, upcoming freshman Alissa Martin turned in a great score by tying her personal best of 551. As if being in the spotlight was not enough, Benjamin really turned up the heat in the air rifle division. Besting her career high 587, Benjamin tied the school record air rifle score of 590. To put things in perspective, last year’s score of 587 earned teammate Jenna Compton a trip to the NCAA championships, where her score of 590 lead to winning the national championship. Although Benjamin’s top gun, gold medal performance was not uncontested as OSU’s Amanda Furrer also fired a 590 but finished 2nd in the tie breaker. The excitement did not end there as once all added up, OSU and Akron team scores were tied. At first it looked like OSU would take it when an addition error put OSU ahead, but then another challenge eked Akron ahead by a mere two points, 2314 to 2312. This gave Akron the air rifle championship in addition to the prestigious individual gold medal adorning Benjamin. What an exciting event for Akron! “No doubt about it, OSU is really tough this year,” states coach Newt Engle, “but what a great time for Sarah to step up and lead us to this victory.” The huge question, “Will this performance earn Benjamin a trip to the NCAA’s?” will be answered in a little more than a week when the NCAA committee completes the selection process. Timing is the name of the game as Akron, OSU, and several other schools who are members of the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference will travel to a new shooting venue at Michigan State University next weekend for the WIRC championships. Going into this championship, Akron, OSU, and Morehead State University of KY are all running neck to neck in both smallbore and air rifle. This championship promises to be as highly contested, if not more so, than this past weekend’s match. The lead will be flying starting at 8am on Saturday the 20th of February eventually determining the 2010 WIRC Champions later in the day. “Our team’s challenge will be to concentrate on the importance of every single shot”, states Engle.

Look what the Canadian's are up too
Zipsrifle replied to plowerman78's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Wouldn't take this one lightly. Anyone remember the utter annihilation of Miami lead by the shock and awe of Steve Mcnees two years ago? I sure do. After the miracle shot in the MACC the season before, that beatdown was so satisfying. -
I couldn't agree more.

Here is something that Akron and Cleveland both share as eyesores, major transportation arteries passing through downtown. Cleveland has thsi just north of downtown and Akron has the rail lines between UA and downtown. I've always thought that it would be beneficial to cover these areas and turn the space into a large park. Of course, This would be hugely expensive, and the benefit would be difficult to quantify. Besides, these cities are in the Midwest so there isno chance of getting billions of dollars of federal money like Boston did for the Big Dig. These arteries were vital to these cities many years ago, but now they are a bit of a nuisance. Regardless, I like the design of the new law building, fits the urban theme well.

I don't buy the argument that recruits won't know about your team if they play all their games on Saturdays. Do you really think that recruits are sitting down to watch the Zips at 8:30 on a Friday night? Do you think they would be impressed with the crowd of 5000 people in the stands? Bottom line, we have the best facilities in the MAC and a revitalized campus, no reason we cannot recruit the caliber of players to Akron to win the conference. Winning is what will bring us better recruits. Personally, I think this weekday night thing is all about money, period. ESPN needs to have something on for the bars across the US to show on a weeknight. ESPN makes money, the Schools make money. The ones who get the shaft are the fans who can't enjoy a beautiful Fall Saturday with tailgating and football, and the players who are playing in an empty stadium. You know, the people who are really passionate about their teams, they are the ones being taken advantage of. I wonder, how much did UA make off of the Temple game in TV royalties and how much would they have made if the game was played the next day, which was beautiful?

Akron "All-Aughts" Teams; Nominate Your Favorite Zips from 2000-09
Zipsrifle replied to UA Fan's topic in Other Sports
I graduated over 10 years ago so I'm out. Even if I could be nominated, no way I'm qualified to even be on this list. -
Why don't we have this?
Zipsrifle replied to UAZipster0305's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Well, I'm sure your donation to the soccer stadium will bring this closer to a reality. I'm just glad to be getting the upgrades for the best soccer program in the country! -
Beacon Journal says Caleb staying!
Zipsrifle replied to UAbandfan's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
In reading Caleb's comments, this guy is freaking too good to be true! I'm asking myself, what did Akron do to deserve this guy?? Honestly, right now, he tops Proenza for my favorite person in Akron. It's damn hard to top Dr. P.Now, how are we paying for this new soccer stadium, and if it involves issuing more bonds, should I be pissed at Dr. P or Caleb? Hmmmmm..... -
Glad you don't sit in our section...that 3-9 season generated f-bombs galore. Richard Pryor would have blushed.LOL Probably good that I'm behind you guys, though I'm convinced my kids will learn all the standard four letter words courtesy of their father cursing at a Zips sporting event of some type.

+1 it sucks, but whining about the rules and coming up with conspiracy theories as to why we lost just makes our fan base look like pathetic, pissy sore losers.+2You play with the rules you have. Everyone who had any influence in the outcome knew the rules beforehand. If the rules are changed in the future, great, but I am not in a position to infer how. I congratulate UVA on a hard fought game. Remember, they kept a team that was rewriting the record book scoreless and found a way to win. I also don't buy the conasiprcy theories. The statement this team made during the season assured we were too high profile to simply sweep under the rug. Prior to this season, I never understood why people are drawn to soccer, but I do now. When do tickets go on sale for next season? Finally, I cannot express how proud I am of this team! You have accomplised more than anyone ever expected and did it in the upmost fashion. Great job!

This is up there with my greatest sports moments as a fan. Great job!
