  1. He made it through the bad water on South Bass OK didn't he? His horse appears to be OK.
  2. OK, I'm sure I'm missing something here, but I am now looking at the Depth chart and Tuzze is listed as a backup FB with Hendry's old #. So, is he still in HS or is he playing with the Zips?
  3. When I first saw this topic, I thought it was about the Purdue Line. I'm the first to admit I'm no expert on football, but I did a little homework on Purdue. Looking at their O-line, it looks like the right side has a few green guys on it but the left side is experienced. Kirsch may have backed up Orton, but he's got a lot more experience than Getsy so I don't expect him to make many mistakes. Especially since the WR he's throwing to appear to be very experienced. Davis the TE looks like he's got good hands too. In the backfield, Void is a Doak Walker Candidiate. Looks like their Offence is very solid. The DL is very experienced so I expect our inexperienced OL to have their hands full. The Linebackers are all returing starters, but Iwuchukwu is coming off a knee injury so lets hope he's a bit rusty. The Cornerbacks and Safeties are also all returning starters. So, after a little research, I'd say we are going against what looks like the same Purdue team as last season. As we all know they are all talking about having an undefeated season this year and I don't expect them to overlook us.
  4. Boy I hope so. From what I saw this weekend, a MAC team with a solid D will go far. I'll be happy if we can keep Purdue under 40.
  5. Oh, I know Kennedy will get a lot of carries. I was just really impressed with how Biggs came out and did so well last year. We know he's great, but it's nice to see him get more attention. Obviously with Kennedy getting carries, Biggs won't put up the numbers, but having 2 good backs can only help us get more wins, and that's what's most important. As far as Purdue, we may have a chance, but it's pretty slim. Under JD we were able to compete against the teams near our level, but we got BLASTED against PSU, Virginia, and NIU last year. That's not a good track record. If we can keep this game reasonable, then I'll be happy. New line, New QB, Freshman starting (possibly?) against an experienced Big Ten team that expects to go undefeated, it will be rough next week. JD's stock will go up in my book if we keep it close. If it is a blowout, then it looks like JD might have a hard time against big time teams.
  6. Was Johnson hurt or something. If not, I say Frye is now #2, and Harris may be in a battle for Johnson for 3rd string.
  7. Glad to see this. I think he's a great back and deserves the national attention. Click Me
  8. I got my tickets last Saturday. No bobblehead. I hope they will hold onto it until the first game....I won't be in town till then. Can I defer my "Golden Ticket" to some deserving Akronite? With Gas prices pushing $4 up here, I don't think I'll be making the drive from Michigan tonight!
  9. 2G is way to much for me! I sit in General Admission remember!
  10. The Fever is spreading............
  11. I read the article and I'm starting to feel worse about the way things are going. JD seems a little disappointed in where the Zips stand right now and reading into that a little makes me think we need to make a lot of progress in the next 2 weeks. The other thing that has me conerned is that the D appears to be so much better than the offence. Does anyone have any idea how this years Defence stacks up against the Defence at the end of last season? If we are taking a step backwards with the D, and they are mowing over the Offence, then we are in for a LONG season. If the D is at about the same level or better than the D at the end of last season, we are probably going to be OK by the time MAC play starts. Go Zips!
  12. Living near Detroit, I don't have much opportunity to follow the Browns live. This morning, while reading about the preseason game last night, I was again pleased to see that #5/9 had a decent game. The fans in Cleveland seem to be in love with him and Johnson only has his experience in the NFL to keep him in the #2 spot. Then I saw something that put me through the roof. Bud Shaw is an A$$! At the end of his article he has to take a cheap shot at Akron by saying "Frye excelled in the lost cause at Akron." This was totally uncalled for. Maybe if he opened his eyes he would see that UA has put millions in to the upgrading their athletic facilities. A new football stadium is being actively persued. UA fired press darling in LO and put in a guy who wins MAC COY in his first season. If this dumb A$$ actually paid attention to UA he would see that we nearly took down Wisconsin two years ago knocked off Marshall and fought Miami for the division title last year. It's people like him who keep cramming OSU onto every sports report possible. This pisses me off. Bud Shaw is an A$$
  13. I SECOND THAT!! I've been looking for a magnet for some time online. In fact, I'm working on making up some of my own magnets since UA doesn't appear to have any. They sell adhesive backed magnets at the craft stores. Vinyl costs an arm and a leg so I'm thinking about spraypainting the logo on the back of some clear plastic and sticking that to the magnet. We'll see how it goes. Oh, yea, when is the band going to put out a CD or something? I know KingZip thinks this stuff is "gay", but apparently there are lots of "gay" people who tailgate before college football games across the country.
  14. We've been VERY fortunate in the last 8 years with QB's. I don't think Butchie got enough credit (though I don't think a board existed back then to get anyone elses thoughts). I think JD has seen what Getsy can do and is going to give him his shot. I agree, when we are getting our A$$e$ handed to us at Purdue, we put Fergie in for the 2nd half. I don't worry too much about JD playing the right player. If I remember correctly, we were all moaning about why Ringer didn't get more playing time late in '03. Biggs was coming on strong in fall ball last year and he was already hyped up before the season started. Biggs got the nod even before most of us had any idea Ringer wasn't what we thought he would be. From what I've read, I have a feeling Ringer is now just a blocking back for Biggs and Kennedy. Though JD always talks about putting the best 11 players on the field, I have to believe we keep a couple guys redshirted (Jackson, Jacquemain). A LOT can be learned from taking a year off! Another thing that everyone has forgotten was how much we used to whine in the LO days about losing the games we had won. I think this was one of the BIGGEST complaints. Whether the Marshall game was luck or not, Can't and Marshall has changed the attitude from "I hope we don't lose this one" to "We're going to find a way to win this one". We battled Miami last year, they were the better team and they won. I think they got more of a fight than they expected. That attitude and the smart play calling of JD is what makes him a step above LO. We aren't supposed to burn up the MAC this year, not even supposed to contend for the East. Attitude is everything and IMHO, will be the difference against MTSU, Ball State, Buffalo, OU, and Can't this year.
  15. WOW, ZIPS WIN WESTFIELD CUP!!! I was really encouraged when the guys knocked off the #10 team in the nation, but now they've knocked off the#3 team in the nation! If that doesn't give them a confidence boost, I don't know what will! I really don't follow soccer, but after this weekends results, I'm seeing a Zips squad that will open eyes across the nation! What a weekend for Zips soccer, record crowds and taking down big teams! Go ZIPS!
  16. Back in the day when I was at UA, I had to go to the study center and watch the athletes on the other teams goof off while I studied. I'm with you that if someone wants it enough, they can get a degree from U.A. Maybe not in any dicipline, but in some area. Athletes are given so many chances to make it in the classroom that there is no excuse not to keep up the grades.
  17. Why the hell is anyone here talking about moving to a different confrence! The best we've done is tie for the MAC East Crown (and not go to the championship game). Sorry folks, we are, at best, considered an AVERAGE MAC team. Toledo has been kicking A$$ for years now and they aren't going anywhere. Lets revisit this discussion when it is appropriate, in about 10 years.
  18. Anybody got a good copy of the fight song, Go Zips Go, etc. from the band? I'm starting to prep for 2005 Tailgating and the stuff I've got sucks. The stuff I've found on the internet sounds like a 12 year old put it together on their keyboard. It would be nice if the band put out something.
  19. Mark my words, this thing WILL GET OVERUSED! At the first game, nobody will know what the hell it is. IF people actually do respond to it, the guy holding the button will start pushing it like it was giving out free Coke or something. Then people will just get annoyed and ignore it. I give them credit for trying stuff, but what are we supposed to do when the whistle sounds....Go Home? Oh, wait, it was "Time to get to work". OK, what do I work on? What am I supposed to do? I don't really think the guys on the field will get any more modivated by a whistle than by JD screaming at them. There is nothing like having the entire crowd get fired up when the fight song, or something else starts playing. It's got to be interactive with the fans and the fans have to want to participate. I went to UofM games for years and having 100,000 people singing The Victors was AWESOME. We need to find a way to get the fans more involved, I don't have the slightest clue how to do this, but I think this is the key. I act like an idiot at the games anyway. I figure if I'm the yelling idiot, then other people will speak up, if just a little. Maybe they are on to something. I've been wrong a million times before so all I'm asking is to let me know what I'm supposed to do when the whistle blows. You know what I think UAM should do. Give out gold shirts at a few games as a promotion and sell gold shirts with UA logos at the book store, etc. If they could get people to start wearing the gold shirts at the games, it would get no only get rid of some of that God Forsaken OSU crap, but help the fans feel more apart of the team. When the players look up in the stands (assuming there are people there) they could easily see all the people backing them up.
  20. I'd like to think Charlie keeps those comments in his head and just threw Doug a glance and a smile after his preseason TD. I think we all see it as a jab against the MAC....Do you really think those guys get worked up if someone takes a jab at their old college?
  21. What is really pathetic is that it took the New York Giants to post an article about two recent UA grads going against each other in a pre-season game. Nobody in NY even knows where Akron is!
  22. Dave, I listened to the broadcast from MRO radio and you did an excellent job. Two things suprised me. First, that JD said he doesn't expect any of the Freshman to be playing on the line. Seemed like there was some clamour about that being a real possibility. Only time will tell. The second thing was how candidly JD talked about how UA was persuing the new Stadium. You wouldn't know it by any of the reports, but sounds like UA is pushing hard to get the new stadium DONE!
  23. Dave, Do you have a more specific time/date when you’re on WVFN 730 in Lansing? I should be able to get both the Lansing and Ann Arbor broadcast from where I work.
  24. Sorry for the late update. I was out of the country for 2 weeks and then I started my Engineering Graduate classes.... (I'm the yellow M+M if didn't figure it out) Anyway, 2 UA shooters helped the state of Ohio set a new record score and bring home the Junior Air Rifle National Championship! Below is the press release: UA Coach Engle: Akron Rifle Fans, Sometimes as we go through the summer noteworthy events happen involving our athletes. I felt winning a national championship is one of these events. As you will read below Akron Zips April Engle and Megan Reinking qualified to be on the 4 person state team representing Ohio at the 3 position air gun championships. Along with junior team mates in the Akron area, the Ohio team took it all and brought the gold back to Ohio. The hard work of April and Megan continue to gain national attention for Akron Rifle. P R E S S R E L E A S E The Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association Date: July 10, 2005 ORPA Junior Air Rifle Team Wins National Championship! New National Record for Women’s Air Rifle Team! Last year at the 2004 NRA junior air gun championships held at Pocatello Idaho, the Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association (ORPA) precision team finished in second place by a slim 3 points behind an ever powerful Pennsylvania team. For the past 364 days head coach Tom Paumier, with the cooperation of coaches from all of Ohio, have been grooming teams in preparation for the 2005 Championships held in Bloomington Illinois. On the trip home last year, Coach Paumier and the Ohio contingent decided a national championship was within reach, and they would do what ever it took to bring a championship trophy to Ohio. ORPA is proud to announce this years teams did all this and much more. At the junior air gun championships, each state is invited to bring three teams. A 3 position precision air rifle team, a 3 position sporter air rifle team, and an air pistol team. This year, Ohio was proud to field a team for each of these categories. The first ever junior air pistol team finished in 7th place out of a field of 10 teams. The team consisted of team captain Ryan Devine (Columbus, OH) who lead the team with a score of 720 out of a possible 800 points. This impressive score ranked Ryan as one of the top 10 junior pistol athletes in the USA. Ryan was amply supported by his teammates Rene Goeppinger (Fredericktown OH) who fired a 681 and Staci Collins (Waterford OH) with a 589. All three pistol athletes are from the Big Walnut Shooting Sports Association in Delaware, Ohio. A very good showing for a first appearance at the national championships. In the sporter rifle division Ohio again lit up the boards with some impressive scores. Team captain Dominic Mendiola (Hartville OH) lived up to the responsibilities of his position by showing his team what can be accomplished through hard work and determination. Being introduced to the championship realm last year, Mendiola knew what to do this year and went for it! Not only did he lead his team to an 8th place finish among the field of 16 teams, but he finished in the #4 individual slot overall (out of 75 competitors) only 8 points away from a Bronze medal. To put things in perspective, Dominic is now the #4 ranked, 3 position sporter air rifle athlete in the USA! This performance also earned Dominic a position on the newly formed NRA Junior Air Gun National Team! The entire ORPA sporter team consisted of: 1098 Dominic Mendiola of Hartville, Ohio, Great Trail Musketeers JRC. 1010 Rob Femer of Grove City, Ohio, Central Crossing HS JROTC. 981 Peter Deem of Waterford, Ohio, Big Walnut Shooting Sports Assn. 911 David Picard of Uniontown, Ohio, Canton McKinley Rifle & Pistol. 4000 Team Total (Individual score out of a possible 1200) However, the precision air gun division was all Ohio! At the end of the first day of the two day competition the Ohio Team was in third place but only 6 points out of first. Remembering the 2nd place finish last year, the team met and planned for a come-from-behind victory. The Ohio team not only came from behind, but never looked back as they fired their way into a national championship victory, and set a new national record in the process. The all female team consisted of: 1181 Ashley Jackson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Ashland Eagles JRC. 1161 April Engle of Akron, Ohio, The University of Akron. 1154 Megan Reinking of Akron, Ohio, The University of Akron. 1141 Abbey Stanec of Wadsworth, Ohio, Ashland Eagles JRC. 4637 Team total and new Women’s 3 Position Air Rifle National Record. This team total and new national record edged the Ohio team into a close finish ahead of shooting powerhouses like #2 Georgia (4630) and #3 Michigan (4620). But the honors continued with individual recognitions and awards. Team Captain April Engle finished in the #12 slot in the nation, and Ashley Jackson battled head to head with the best rifle athletes in the nation for top honors. When the smoke cleared, Georgia’s Phillip Huckaby emerged as the nations top gun, and Ohio’s Ashley Jackson captured the #2 slot. This stellar performance earned Ashley the Silver medal and a position on the newly formed NRA Junior Air Gun National Team! Gaining international recognition at this years championships, two members of the ORPA team competed in the first ever international 3 position air rifle postal match against the South African National Schools Shooting Union. Ashley Jackson was a member of the 10 person precision team and Dominic Mendiola was on the 10 person sporter team. Another HUGE honor for Team Ohio! Results of the postal match will be announced at a later date. All members of this years ORPA teams offer sincere thanks to The Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association for their generous financial assistance. As well assistance from The National Rifle Association Foundation which is supported by local Friends of the NRA events. Lastly and MOST importantly, a big thanks to the local junior rifle and pistol programs across Ohio with the coaches and parents who make Ohio the envy of the nation. The defense of this years national championship will take place next year in Redmond Oregon. Plans are already being developed to provide the Ohio teams the best chance possible of remaining the top team in the nation. If you are interested in providing assistance (financial or otherwise) please contact the air gun director listed below. If you, or someone you know is an Ohio resident, (or near Ohio) and interested in the Olympic and NCAA sport of air gun competitions please contact: Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association Air Gun Director Zipsrifle Note: I deleted the contact information. IM or e-mail me if you want contact info. I don't know if it was the directior's personal e-mail and home Phone #. I know I wouldn't want that stuff posted on the internet for everyone to see!
