McNees makes Sports Illustrated's Photos
Zip Watcher replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Don't know if you saw the whole game .. but there wasn't any loafing done by the Zips vs. Gonzaga .. or pretty much versus any team in the month of March.Fact is, it's near impossible to look good as the lone defender back in a 3 on 1 fast break opportunity. There's nothing McNees could have done better or differently on that play. And it isn't BAD for the program .. it's a single photo from a game that told a much bigger story than the one play shown here.Judging a photo to say loafing illustrates disrespect. Can you now tell velocity from a still photo?Remember, the Zips are .. they didn't get to be that by loafing.Go Zips!!! B) B) -
Taking a "potentially good 4 year player" over a CERTAINLY good 4 year player is pretty risky in my mind. Roberts has to be the best walk-on in D1 basketball .. if not, he's close.Take a look a the biggest games the Zips have played in the last 2 years. In most (FSU, Gonzaga, MAC tourney) .. Roberts was HUGE. Against the big schools, he comes up big.Taking care of him shouldn't be disregarded, IMHO.Go Zips!! B)

Guys, if you want this topic locked, keep it up. We're tired of your back and forth on this topic. Neither of you is going to convince the other .. so let's leave the debate about the schedule alone. Thanks,ZW

Some of the videos there are tremendous. Look up the "Money Hole" or "Reality TV Skanks" sometime if you have a spare minute. You won't regret it. -
Elton Alexander on the Zips + Zeke
Zip Watcher replied to Dave in Green's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I will defend the coaches. I see these kids in practice. Neither of them puts in the effort necessary toexcel as a division one player. Bardo, more than Swiech works on his game. After two years of weighttraining Swiech still looks like the Pillsbury doughboy. You understand me up to this point?A coach can teach over and over. It is up to the player to develop. Under different circumstances, thatis, if the were a great need for their services the coaching staff would light an even larger bonfire undertheir azzes. They, not the coaches, play themselves on to the bench.Sure, I am darn disappointed that huge, wide body such as Steve Swiech puts so little effort into improving. It is on Steve to improve. And, frankly, he has not. Bardo seems to be making small gains. Mike needs to learn how to play like a big man. That is, keep theball high off the floor, be forceful, rebound, attack. Instead, Mike tends to lay back and let the game come to him. One player did greatly improve this year. Steve McNees. Frankly, I figured Steve for the deep end ofthe bench. He proved me wrong. He worked hard at his game. He became an important part of thesuccess story this season has been. Steve did a great job.In Zeke the coaches have what they have been looking for ... a student of the game. Zeke will deliverbecause he has the personal desire.I've been to practice too, and all I can say is that you're assertion that Bardo & Swiech don't put forth the effort is pure rubbish. Probably your least informed, worst conceived post ever.Ridiculous. -
Agreed on point 2.On point 1, aren't the Zips guaranteed 16 .. er .. 19 games against cupcakes from January - March? B) B)

It's not yet been 11 days since the Zips won the MAC Title .. and already Skip is throwing a stinky wet blanket on the smoldering embers of excitement for Zips hoops. Well done Skip .. well done. Great effort. Please cite a post where ANYONE is fine with only having one chance to dance. People here are coming to the realization that the building of the program is WORKING .. that the schedule needs to fit the team when it's early in the process (the last couple of years) and that as the team establishes winning habits, we expect the scheduling to grow and get more difficult. The RESULTS (SEE: 2009 MAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP) prove that KD's plan is WORKING. Would other plans be working? Perhaps .. but the important thing is that his vision and strategy IS panning out.Do you honestly think that KD is going to sit on his laurels and pretend that the status quo will fill the trophy case? What possible evidence is there to indicate he will?He recruits the best college players from the City of Akron .. starts the process, did he stop there?NO .. he went out and started bringing in All-State players from OH, PA, WV, VA .. 1st team all staters. State players of the year. Did he sit back and get satisfied with that?NO .. the staff aimed higher and landed a top 50 recruit / top 10 center to go with his stable of All-State players. Is he satisfied with that?NO .. now the staff is chasing guys who aren't even OPENING the DOOR for most of our conference opponents. The Zips aren't going to get every 4 or 5 star guy they chase. But they're in the conversation with these kids with schools like tOSU, Xavier, Dayton, Butler, Kentucky, Pitt, WVU .. and you can't land a great player until you are in that conversation and a part of the process. The Zips are there now.Did the US give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? NO!Nothing about how the past 5 years have gone suggests to me that this is a one and done thing. The Zips won the title with nobody averaging 12 ppg. They won the title with 1 senior. They won the title with no short-term hired guns. They won the title with depth and team play. These are components to building a championship program .. not just building a championship team. I think there's a clear difference, and I think the Zips fit squarely in the former category. B) B) Repeat after me .. start slowly if you have to: THE ZIPS ARE THE 2009 MAC CHAMPIONS! THE ZIPS ARE THE 2009 MAC CHAMPIONS! :champs: :champs: Go Zips!!

Good teams make their own luck.Penno's shot in 2007 was a miracle shot. The CSU shot @ Syracuse was a miracle shot. The plays against UT were 2 difficult basketball plays made in the heat of the game. One was a squared up look from normal 3 point range, and another was a great pass by a player with court vision and a habit of winning. They were great plays .. not miracles. In a year, this is what fans will remember .. a little bit more than what happened on Tuesday. Indeed they will. Sucks for them that the Zips will be a better, more seasoned team than this year. B) Go Zips!
-
Thanks for introducing perspective. This has been my argument for 3 years now. It's a process .. the progression is evident. Earlier this year the belief structure among fans was shaky. KD has a plan. Witness the results. Trust the plan. I for one am thrilled with the trend, progress & results.Go Zips!! B)

What he said! B) B)

Nice post CK. Agree completely. The Zips need to put themselves in that position. It's a process .. and it won't magically be bestowed upon them for winning 4 at the Q this month. The next step has to be continually taken.

Nice post. Thanks for taking the time.

I couldn't disagree more about the PD. I felt like the MACC coverage was first rate. The Toledo win took more front page space than CSU's win @ Hinkle on the same night. The PD didn't send Elton to Portland, but there were stories, sometimes 2 a day (Livingston), and they had Daryl's diary.I get the PD, not the ABJ and I'd say I was pretty happy with the coverage.

What the Captain said. I think that with a good start, reserved seats are going to be harder to come by, and the GA's are going to get a little tighter.I remember a pretty full JAR in 86/87 and the following few seasons.Go Zips! B) B)

Just think if J. Wood and Romoe were still here..... Three more years of Cvetinovic might put an end to those wishes .. Nik's got a HIGH ceiling .. great effort tonight. Went right at guys way bigger than him.

Losing by only 2 at Creighton is a VERY respectable showing by BG.

Bilas went to Duke, what do you expect?

How can you guys believe this? Yes, he is KD friend and supporter and I'm sure he want's us to win as long as KD is the coach...But an outspoken Zips fan? Baloney! How many times has he ever stood on our sidelines or sat near our bench in a nationally televised game? Exactly ZERO times. Thus far, any run UA basketball gets with the media is:*The CMU comment*The shot*LBJI, for one, do not need to hear another word on any of them. The team, the NCAA bid and Zeke is what should be talked about. Can't game in 07 on FSN (available nationally) .. sat courtside & stormed the court with the win.Zips Win! .. you are aware that the Zips WON on Saturday? Right? After all, you're going to Portland! Why so cranky today?Go Zips!! B)

Wow .. didn't know those guys were UA alumns.I would have put money on comedian George Wallace being the guy for Akron in something like this.
