  1. Personally, I am a strong proponent of personal property rights.
I am as well. However, I am opposed to how eminent domain is used as an issue. When it comes to this case, I am of course for the university taking advantage of it.Heh, call it it hypocritical (and you could well be right) but as long as eminent domain is as it is, why should the UofA be the only one's not to use it.
  2. Anyone else a little miffed that the tone of the article kind of treats us (and really all of the MAC schools) as kind of an afterthought. I know we should be used to this by now, but it's almost like we're a D-2 school. Like, ohh yeah Illinois and Purdue are interested and so is ECU, ohh yeah and then there are those MAC schools like Akron. I dunno, just rubbed me the wrong way I guess.
Believe it or not, Akron got some solid street cred in the Carolinas with the NC State win. It could be the writer's way of identifying the MAC...they don't know Ball State down there, but they remember the Zips.
It's true. I was one myspace or facebook or somewhere and some girl posted pics from the grand opening of some cafe in north carolina and some kid was wearing an Akron T-shirt. I was like woah!
  3. immediately moving offices was a first red flag, but then the part with ND making a public statement that playing in the MAC will "...dramatically increase the probability that we can win our homecoming game..." is absurd. Even someone representing Can't wouldn't say something unprofessional as that.

  4. I think it's a little unrealistic to think that ANY 30 second spot is going to grab the attention of a 17 year old w/ a 30 on the ACT.
I had a 29 on the ACT and have two degrees from UA. Does that count?I didn't go here because of ads though. Your point holds.
The best spot in the country may only do enough for the kid to go online later and look up a little bit of information on the school. Which brings me to another point. Our website is a total joke.
The website falls victim to the same mentality as the television ads; the bureaucratic in-the-box safety dance. As soon as someone sticks there neck out at a meeting and proposes something even slightly different, it gets knocked down. We don't want to........... take your pick........ it could be any of a million excuses. We don't want to.... make parents think we are not a serious school. We don't want to look like an unprofessional academic institution. We don't want to put off this demographic or that demographic. blah blah blah. So what you end up with is standard boiler-plate corporate tone-neutral output.
  5. UA needs to think bigger. Think more like Leo Burnett and less like some local ad shop.
The ironic thing is, you get some small marketing group, or even some students in marketing and advertising, and the first thing they do is try to emulate the big dog professionals. They get nifty editing gadgets like multilayer chroma animation and instead of coming up with a better way to get the message across, they slap the University president in front of a parallax montage of videos and think "see, we can make something that has professional looking effects and not cheesy like ed mullinax's car ads"
  6. Dr. P made it about himself first and the university second.
I agree completely. He may not have even done it intentionally, I don't know, but the commercials for years have all done just about the same thing, if I remember. Him sitting on a stool narrating in front of a graphical smörgåsbord of moving video shots. Whether intentional or not, it makes him the center, and the university the backdrop.
  7. On cam#1, I've been watching them auger out the holes for the columns that will support the main concourse and upper stands and fill them with concrete. Also on cam#1, on the lefthand side, it looks like they are really trying to fine-tune the exact slope on the hole. My guess is that they will build forms and rebar and pour concrete on that because it is where the lower stands will rest on.

  8. Judge spicer ruling that the University pay exactly what they originally offered is a very very clear message to property owners. If you translate it, what it says is: "The university made an offer that is more than fair. If you gamble on making frivolous gains, you will end up losing what you could have bargained for in good faith"

  9. or maybe someone who runs the site has a problem with opinions which are against what they believe....kinda goes against the whole point of a "open forum"
Here's the problem I had with your topic, aside from it being completely stupid, is the fact that there are only a half dozen posts on here today, and you make that to add to the list. In other words, why couldn't you inject your silly opinion in the game thread where everyone else put their opinions? If you make a new thread, and the 100 other people on this forum who have a more sensible opinion refute you in it, what still ends up happening is your silly thread title is there among the 5 other threads of the day, giving your silly opinion disproportionate representation, as if 1/6 of the people actually think like you.
  10. Did anyone notice last night, on the 11:00 Channel 5 news how he mentioned something to the effect:"OK Zipsnation, here's your media coverage"?I think someone is lurking.
It's probably very smart to lurk around places like this, where you can get angles and leads on little scoops you might not find if you stay inside the regular circles
  11. I don't think most of us need a reality check about the NIT and how we ourselves probably wouldn't be talking much about it if we weren't in it, BUT, the topic started out about the discrimination phenomenon in that OSU and CSU both get more coverage for being in that very same tourney. I can understand why can't gets some press for being in the big dance. I didn't really join in the protest, because I also understand why the Cleveland rag would focus on CSU.I just wanted to point out that I don't think the topic is about NIT lack of respect. We all know it's the forgotten step child.
