I agree with the substitution rule being a problem. As far as the clock goes, who cares. Forty five minutes is 45 minutes no matter how you count. Up or down.

If you noticed, the writer said it was a small gripe. I would, however, prefer that it counted up. Soccer play by play is always in terms of what minute (total game) in which something happened. It's been done occasionally. They still stopped the clock at certain times per college rules.

The sub rule is the biggest problem with developing players for the next level. College players who are not 90+ minutes fit can easily get overly inflated stats. I would continue to allow more subs in college than pros, but once a player is subbed out, they should not be allowed to re-enter. With the "bloated rosters", there are plenty of players available who could actually get more playing time.

    ... 2. Caleb Porter ...

Porter motivates his players and relates to them well, and he knows how to make proper changes mid-game to boost his team, especially in the attack. He guided the University of Akron to the national championship in 2010 and then took the Portland Timbers to the top of MLS in 2015. He's still coaching Portland and knows the game and the MLS-based players very well. He would be a darkhorse but he would be my pick. ...

    Mine, too. :)

The Zips played their best at the end of the season. All of those games were lightly attended and the guys did just fine.

Nevertheless, it is an NCAA Tournament match and deserves respect as such. Zips Mens Soccer's reputation, including sizable crowds, certainly helped to get Akron a home match this season. The UA Athletic Department owes it to this team to do everything possible to promote and encourage as large an attendance as possible. Zips Mens Basketball v American University is just another in a long tradition of cupcakes at the JAR  .

  4. Great seeing Ritchie Layrea and Anthony Ampaipitakwong among alumni in the crowd last night supporting the Zips. We are so fortunate.

Definitely will be rooting for Impact Montreal and GK Evan Bush v NYRB in MLS playoffs today. Also looking forward to seeing the USMNT roster announcement at 5:10 pm today for the matches this Friday in Columbus vs Mexico and the Nov 15th match in Costa Rica. #ZipsinthePros

Did Belana play at all in OT?  Holthusen definitely played more than anyone Akron would have liked.

The link I posted is to the game stats including play-by-play (p-b-p).

Starters for OT1: For AKR: #1 LUNDT, Ben, #26 CORDEIRO, Manuel, #16 WIEDT, Shane, #11 LEWIS, Jonathan, #9 HOLTHUSEN, Stuart, #25 SOARES, Goncalo, #10 NAJEM, Adam, #3 HINDS, Nick, #4 DE VERA, Niko, #7 GAINFORD, Sam, #20 RUHAAK, Brad.

No subs shown in OT1 p-b-p

Starters for OT2: For AKR: #1 LUNDT, Ben, #10 NAJEM, Adam, #9 HOLTHUSEN, Stuart, #25 SOARES, Goncalo, #11 LEWIS, Jonathan, #7 GAINFORD, Sam, #4 DE VERA, Niko, #26 CORDEIRO, Manuel, #3 HINDS, Nick, #16 WIEDT, Shane, #20 RUHAAK, Brad.

102:47 AKR substitution: KAHSAY, Ezana for HINDS, Nick.

    No Belana in OT.

    From p-b-p, it appears Stuart played 45 min, 17 sec (59:01 - 104:18)

    Thanks for posting that link.

I fail to see how Coach Embick's gamble saved starters' legs, considering most of the starters were pressed back into service during OT.  I would say that he gambled and lost.  The bench should have held on to the lead.

He didn't say saved "starters' legs".  He made a large number of subs including one (Dener Dos Santos) who hasn't played at all this season.

Also, which lead? When we gave up the first goal, all of this game's starters were in. When we gave up the 2nd goal, the only sub that we made from the lineup that scored our second goal was Nate Shultz for Goncalo Soares. Nate is usually a starter. I wouldn't say he was "bench".

What is so frustrating is that the talent is there...this is largely the same team that made the College Cup last year. This season has been characterized by poor discipline, defensive lapses, a general lack of focus, and no sense of offensive urgency. These all have to do with coaching, not talent. Can you imagine a Caleb Porter team performing like this? Me either. Embick has been good up until this season, but I am starting to lose confidence in him.

I'm okay with a down year every once in a while; however, given the talent, this season should not be one of those.

On the Caleb Porter comment, CP would definitely be all over these guys in practice and during games. He would not just pull them but he would tell them in no uncertain terms what they weren't doing or were doing wrong. I would certainly hope that our coaches are doing that even if not quite in the same way as CP would.

I agree that "This season has been characterized by poor discipline, defensive lapses, a general lack of focus, and no sense of offensive urgency.", However, as far as largely the same team as last season, really? We have had some significant changes this season which is part of the issue...

    • We MISS Andrew Souders...no doubt. No one brings what Andrew did to our back line. Often, he was able to make up for others' shortcomings.
    • We MISS Richie Laryea. I like what Nick Hinds and Jonathan Lewis bring, but we just moved Hinds up in the tOSU match.
    • We miss Victor. No one has been able to fill that void yet.
    • Stuart has not been available most of the season. He got in at BG, but is hurting again. His speed didn't seem to be there.
    • We've had to change starting lineups in almost every match this season due to various injuries and losing Victor. Not sure how much consistency we can expect when we can't get a consistent starting lineup going.

Also note Adam had multiple opportunities to score at BG from restarts with good position.  The ball sailed well over the net each time. I'm not certain, but it looked like he was hurting.

Should Zips miss the NCAA Tournament (God forbid), then some rigorous reassessment of the program need follow.

I agree, but also challenge you to ask yourself what you're doing to keep the program elite. Showing up to home games is a huge start, but are you doing anything else? And by "you", I mean anyone who is beating their chest that having a down year now and again is completely unacceptable. A good handful of folks showed up at BG, but the home crowds and folks not being willing to travel a few hours to support this team, yet griping how something needs to be done to keep it elite, is beyond me. Keeping this team at the highest level is every bit as much the fans' responsibility as it is anyone's.
