Cal State Northridge Tournament
TheTank123 replied to yazan07's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Yes, Yedlin with the assist. Made up for his giveaway that led to the CSUN goal. Blew by his defender, crossed ball to Scotty who brought it down with a great touch of the chest and a class finish. Awesome -
Cal State Northridge Tournament

look man, the EPL is way more physical than the mls. Just because there are some soft spanish players that "speak for the way football should be played" in camp nou that passess sideways all the time doesnt mean you can't body a guy up There is a vast difference between being physical and being cheap. As someone who was at the game, this was of the latter variety. -

Cleveland State Game
TheTank123 replied to GoZipsGoZips's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Balogun was one of only 2 subs in the semi-final against Michigan. The Zips had only one sub in the Championship Game (the other sub in the semi-final), and he's now at UNC. Balogun played very well. Really impressed with him in that holding spot. Trapp's ball to Mattocks and the subsequent touch and finish were sublime. Gallego/Barson were rocks, Mayer was great and I don't think I've ever seen DeAndre bomb down the sideline like that. There wasn't a player on the field I wouldn't have given at least a 7 to. It blows me away that there was that level of understanding between kids who have known each other for 15 days. -
Nope...my old eyes had the same problem. Wonder if they could some how add a colored border to each number. I like it. Jerseys are made for how they look up close and the gold numbers look great. The star is awesome as well

I'm with you Yaz! People poo-pooed it when I wrote that Schmitt would start this season, but have you actually seen him? He was a real baller, who showed true talent @ Crew Academy in the Development Academy League. Can't wait to see what he's learned from his three seasons of absorbing the Zips' system. Only question is, will Caleb use 2 on top? 4-4-1-1? 4-5-1? 4-4-2?... ANYONE know for sure that Luke Holmes is suspended? Why? He is 100 percent suspended for the first seven games. -
I think it was mentioned but I'm not sure about that rule...I was under the impression that here was no penalty in soccer, even transferring between NCAA D1 schools. Are you sure it's a NAIA to D1 thing?

Yedlin played 1st half at LB and second at RB. I don't know if Breines switched to LB in 2nd but he started at RB in first. Mayer should be good to go next week.

1-1 at half Creighton not letting the back four work the ball around at all! they are playing very very high. Creighton scored off of a bike (unfortuantly i did not see the goal). Darren scored for us. Any idea of the starters?

Please provide pictures for us out-of-towners when the construction is finalized. Thanks in advance to anyone who obliges. Anyone at the game who can give their impressions?

There's a link on the media day thread to U Tube video of the event. Im honestly just shocked at the lack of coverage. We're on preseason update THREE for womens volleyball... They have FIFTEEN videos from the men's soccer media day up on Youtube. That's not enough for you? I had not seen that yet. I stand corrected. I mean, it's not like anyone would know about that unless they were looking for it on Youtube. Why wasn't it posted to Gozips? Or why wasn't it shared on facebook or twitter via one of the athletic department accounts? These are things people want to see but they make little effort to bring them to anyone's attention. Exactly. Its like Microsoft not advertising a new Windows release.

Does anyone know if they will be doing previews for mens soccer? I've seen one (or multiple) for football, basketball, volleyball and womens soccer yet literally nothing about the defending national champions. Maybe it's coming next week because of a later start date but you'd think they would be pushing mens soccer like crazy.

Youth Player Evaluations
TheTank123 replied to fantotheend's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
"So typical of MLS". Boy, does that say a mouthful! I've always thought, MLS is to world football as the MAC is to the USA. MLS tries to use physical style to make up for the lack of consistent skills -- but it isn't that simple, other nations/leagues appear to be trying to emulate our style -- did anyone see the awful takle by a Real Madrid player in Sunday's match with Barca? Criminal -- worse than what Mullan did to Zakuani, and he'll probably get no suspension. Plain and simple...the MLS plays terrible futbol It's not big four quality but it's not terrible. -
Atill no Kyle Culbertson... #42 ranked HS player from 2010... http://academy.demosphere.com/teams/172761...4/12970534.html Maybe he had a change of heart?

Did anyone notice the boys are wearing new jerseys in their roster photos? I love the patch with the star over it...

2011 Lineup Guesses

Where did you hear that?? BTW -- the idea that David Mayer is a very good player should not come as any surprise, if you know he started for Wigan's Academy team (U19 I guess). As someone over at BigSoccer boards shouted out -- get him a Green Card fast, the USA needs a left back BAD. Z.I.P., Mayer looked really skinny to me. Good, but scrawny. Cristian Arboleda is already 22, a grown man. What is this business about Holmes having to miss 7 games? I do not believe it. Why would he transfer here knowing that beforehand? Because its the best program in the country that also sends players to the MLS. -
#2 Ranked Recruiting Class
TheTank123 replied to TheTank123's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Is this another Porter surprise? Is this the reason Walls left? Medellin, Colombia!?! Z.I.P., where you at on this? No, doesn't sound like it. The two players don't play the same position and it sounds like he's been committed to Akron for a while. -
#2 Ranked Recruiting Class

Apparently Tony Walls has transferred back to UWGB. I have no specifics or inside info whatsoever, just rumor around the message boards. Edit: Confirmed via his Twitter feed. From what he says on there he wants to go back to "finish what he started". My guess is that PT was going to be harder to come by than expected. Refers to Akron as "pretty boys" though, which is interesting. -
#2 Ranked Recruiting Class
TheTank123 replied to TheTank123's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Sheesh! UCLA, #21? They bring in the best new goalkeeper in the country (Earl Edwards), the star of the U17 team (Kelyn Rowe) plus all-everything Victor Chavez and Munoz (sorry for the lack of a tilda), the Real Madrid youth, and they're #21, because they had "limited needs"?? If Jorge Salcedo can't take this team to the Final Four, he can't coach. But he can definitely recruit. Eder Arreola, pre-season Hermann favorite. Maybe they're downgraded (word of the week!) because they failed to get any Akron transfers! Not sure what you mean Z.I.P. Every kid you named except for the transfer was part of last year's recruiting class. They only brought in 3 kids total this year. -
College Soccer News ranks Akron as the number 2 class in the country behind North Carolina.

2011 Lineup Guesses
TheTank123 replied to GoZipsGoZips's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
True... size matters... sometimes... as we saw with the WNT against Brazil and Japan... but Barson and Gallego are 5' 10"... Yedlin is 5' 8"... and Balogun is 5' 9"... and Mayer... ???... what happened to Mayer? The new roster shows numbers assigned to everyone now... and Mayer is MIA. Anyone have any info on Mayer??? Nope still not everyone. Bonilla, Portillos, Walls, the seventeen incoming goalkeepers, all still not on the roster. You can relax, I'm sure he's still on the team, they are probably just updating the roster a little at a time. Oh and I have to disagree with Dagillis or Balogun on the the backline. I still think it'll be Mayer-Barson-Gallego-Yedlin. We saw Balogun play as an outside back last year and he wasn't that great. If Yedlin is supposed to be better than Kofi then Balogun isn't starting above Yedlin or Mayer. Furthermore, Balo has never been a centerback and I don't expect him to play there either. I also don't know why Dagillis would start now if he hasn't started in the last two years. He wasn't better than Zarek and I don't expect him to be better than a kid who just finished playing three full games for the U-18 national team under which Porter wan an assistant coach. I think it's back to the bench for Matt and if Balogun is going to play it will be as a defensive midfielder. Even then, I'm not convinced he will be in the starting XI. Also though, even if mine or anyone else's predictions aren't correct on August 27th, that doesn't mean it will be the case for the whole season. I think it could be a few games before we have a concrete starting line-up. I think last year Porter tried starting a few guys at would would eventually be Darren's spot and Scotty's spot. It could take a few games to figure out which guys work together the best. Let's hope that the roster still needs more work. I see that more are missing now... so that's likely the case. I agree with your lineup of defenders... and I agree that there will be changes after the season starts. I said almost the same things on the bottom of page 1. Guessing at the starting lineups isn't all that constructive at this point... it's just amusing... and it's good to see that we have a load of talent... and a coach who's pretty good at putting championship-caliber teams together. I'm sure that some of our players are toying around with lineups too... maybe just in their minds. Our guys can be assured that Coach Porter will have a team of talented guys who just perform well together... all season long... whoever they might be. I would think that Porter released some of the guys who he felt adversely affected the chemistry a few months ago... ... and everyone who is left at this point has a real shot at starting and contributing. Even the guys who are not U-14, U15, U16, U17, U18 standouts... can rise above their expectations now. All that they need to do is listen to the coahing staff... work harder than most... and apply what they learn. Now you can finally relax Anyone else notice that the numbers are kinda weird? There is no number 2 and no number 7. Balogun was 7 last year and is now 27...why would you make a senior change numbers, and why is a common number (2) not assigned to anyone yet? I can't believe they are retiring Zarek's number already... Has anyone else been able to make it out to any more practices?
