bisbee replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I'll be watching in Phoenix with Mrs. Bisbee and the tank will be watching in Boston. GO ZIPS -
Billy Shuler at 96 min goal gives UNC 1-0 win over Indiana. From stats it looked like game was dominated by UNC.

In the words of the immortal Al Davis "JUST WIN BABY" GO ZIPS

I don't see Meves punting a whole lot during the games. He did boot a far one against SMU that impressed me. The majority of the time, he's throwing the ball down field. His throwing distribution has been very impressive. Am I the only fan here that would be very happy to have Meves as our GK next year? He's no Evan Bush but he's turning into one solid goalkeeper. +1 +1I was at the NW game and he punted quite a few times. Since I am NOT an expert on soccer...I don't understand the strategy. Why ever punt??What is Meves supposed to do if there is no one to pass to? Dribble on his 6 until one of his teammates can get open? Punting the ball is a necessary evil. I'm sure the Zips would rather keep the ball in possession, but sometimes its not feasible. Overall I think he's played very well this year. And I've definitely been impressed with Balogun at left back. He's looked extremely calm and competent.Meves is one of the best reactionary goalies in colllege right now. Forget about his leg strength and judge him based on his amazing saves. He had an extremely amazing save last year in the National Championship game. Agree 100%

Quote: From post I made on Big Soccer : I asked in an earlier post but didn't get a response so will try again Has anyone seen Charlotte play this year and would they please let me know what they think. very organized team. Their defense is very good. The mystery has been where is the scoring going to come from. I really like TJ Beaulieu - if he's healthy he has a nose for the goal. Evan James is very quick and seems to finally be putting his game together. Freshman Guisseppe talented goal scorer. I can't remember the good passing center midfielder. Not Aiden Kirkpatrick, he's the DM. Goalkeeper is average. Akron will hold possession with Charlotte trying to counter with speed down the right side. Just a quick assessment.

I can't believe they don't have a bus for everyone. And I would like to think that season ticket holders would have a bus along with the students I don't think that this is at all unusual. I would be surprised if a university offered a bus for anyone other than students even if there was a charge involved.

There have been very few goals scored off set pieces which is why I get so confused/annoyed when teams play that long ball into the box from 45 yards out. Most have been on the counter. Please explain the confusion/annoyance about the long balls.....do you mean we don't defend well against those? That may be the question I was originally asking but perhaps did not state it correctly. Most goals seem to be scored off of those longish balls played high into the box as contrasted with goals scored off of multiple passes and shot attempts from within the 18. Very few goals have been scored off longish balls played into the box, which is why I don't get why teams do it. Again, most goals that I can think of have been scored off the counter. Or on PK's...jesus, now that I think about it, how many goals have we given up on PK's this year? At least three (NU, SMU, UB) but there has to be more... Guess I need to pay more attention to what happens when the other team scores So why on counters? What are we not doing on defense or are these to be expected as often as they occur?

Didn't mean to imply that our fouls were malicious....sometimes it seems they are "ill advised".

I was thinking about the goals allowed this season and wonder if I am correct that a significant number of them have been scored off of set pieces which occurred because of "stupid" fouls?
-
I don't think so. I'll definitely be making the drive down to Storrs, CT if everything plays out as it should. Looking on line this evening for flights

Darren Mattocks appreciation thread
bisbee replied to AkronZip54321's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I think you forgot the word 'yet.' I think at least one more year (I want 2, but don't see it happening) with Caleb would truly make him an elite striker. I agree actually, I think he still has a great deal of raw talent that needs to be refined. +1 -
Exactly! That's why they invented "sick days"

Guess we will have to wait for something to be posted on gozips

I checked their 'message board' to see if any of their comments became more educated, but they continue to call Akron a physical team and plan to 'pass us to death.' I think they will be in for a rude awakening. I'm pumped for this game... ...Here's some of the highlights from the SMU board after a mention of rain for tonight's game: "A slick fast pitch. Break out the long cleats and run Akron into the ground. Derschang, Barnes and company have got to move the ball on the deck. Pass, pass and pass some more until Akron breaks. The shooting gallery must be open. need to take at least 15-20 shots and put 10 on frame. That's how you beat a physical team. If they want to grind then don't let them have the ball." HAHAHAHAHA
