  1. I don't think that TW is a bad guy or that he's not trying. I don't even agree that he hasn't brought us anything. But I do feel like the athletic department as a whole is in a rut. I also feel like a new person with new and fresh ideas is what is needed to pull UA out of that rut. And I feel like we'll see that change made when TW's contract is up.

I agree. I know several people in either athletic offices with universities or in high positions in league offices, and they basically say the same thing, "that working in the UA athletics dept. is toxic".

  2. I would assume TW did some serious griping to the MAC. I spoke with several different people within the athletic administration, expressing my profound disbelief at last years schedule. I also know that I wasn't the only one complaining, so I'm sure our voice found its way to TW.

  3. The attitude with some fans is truly scary. 2 years ago a young lady and her boy friend were standing in the aisle about 8 rows from I sit. She was wearing tOSU & he was wearing Michigan garb. she walked past me and I blatantly told that this was a Zips game and the Suckeyes were not playing here. Her response was " Don't worry honey, I go to school here".

It just goes to show that our students don't give a damn.

  4. The start time is not impacting attendance in a significant way. One could also say that there are those who prefer afternoon games because they don't want to spend a Saturday night at a football game. Everyone has to make choices. One of the choices people who want to have children need to make is how it will impact what they like to do on weekends. In any event, this isn't the real problem.

Attendance is bad this year for a good reason. We may not like the reason, but it is valid. The Zips were not very good last year. Minor league baseball teams and schools like Akron live and die on season ticket sales because it guarantees a sold seat regardless of the product. So, if you got an advertisement to buy 2014 season tickets, what would you think? Many would look at the following:

    1. The Zips are an up and comer, but still a little unknown.

    2. A 5-7 record doesn't inspire them to buy tickets.

    3. Tuesday night games in November.

While I was disappointed in the crowd size Saturday, I understand why. If the Zips continue to have the type of season many of us believe they will, fans should be extremely disappointed if the season ticket sales and thus attendance is still bad next year. Reasons 1 and 2 above would be eliminated. The only question is whether or not reason 3 is the crushing blow to MAC attendance I believe it is. If anyone wants people to believe the MAC product is exciting and worth shelling out hard earned money, playing games on Tuesday nights on national television in November in front of EXTREMELY small crowds is not a way to position your product.

Reason 3 is why I did not re-up my season tickets for this year. There was no way I would be able to function on Wednesday at work after attending a Tuesday night contest. In addition, this year, due to work I couldn't make the Thursday night game and the game last Saturday. Hopefully, next year' schedule will be a bit more fan favorable.

  5. UA basketball: Nick Harney departs team by 'mutual agreement'

By George Thomas Published: June 11, 2014

The University of Akron men’s basketball team has parted ways with a player that they hoped would be a cornerstone when he arrived.

Forward Nick Harney transferred to Division II Fairmont State in West Virginian, according to a Fox Sports Ohio report.

Zips coach Keith Dambrot confirmed the report Wednesday morning via phone call.

“We just thought it was in his best interest to play elsewhere,” Dambrot said. “It was mutually agreed upon.”

Harney, who averaged 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds last season, had a rocky stay at with the Zips that included three suspensions, the most recent one being for a violation of team rules in February.

At 6-foot-8, it’s a case of a player with much potential never living up to it. Harney could be dominant in the post, but played inconsistently.

Look below the surface, however, and perhaps other factors existed. Three suspensions in three years say plenty Harney’s time at UA. Dambrot rarely wants to give up on any individual.

  6. Sometime ago, I was speaking with several people in with colleges throughout the country. They told me that job function of the president has changed over the years. In years, prior, it was running the college or university. Today's president, has a person in charge of that area and the president's job is raise awareness of the university and to raise funds(most important). Raising funds is either by the private sector of grants, donations, scholarships, etc. In the public sector, it was working with all branches of the government to obtain funding for the school, whether it is for academics, athletics, buildings, research, etc.

  7. I also agree with what you say. First and foremost, the MAC is a football conference. Until the MAC decides that they want to step it up with basketball, it will always be playing second fiddle. There needs to be a mandate from the MAC to upgrade ooc schedules, to upgrade facilities, and to increase pay for all coaches.
