  1. I agree with everyone who replied above. Four games seems to be the magic number. JMU, Can't State, Miami, UMass as wins. I also Put Ohio, Toledo and UCF on upset alert. Now obviously we're not going to beat all or even one of those teams but I think that those games have the greatest potential to be an upset.

  2. I never understood why all the hate.

For me it goes like this: The bandwagon fans who never attended the institution. Many of those who do attend the institution do not have positive things to say about the institution that I go too, and the arrogance that the town like I grew up in had towards OSU. If you say you were going to OSU people would praise you at your good choice. If you go to Akron they'd question you "why you aren't going to a real school"...and yes I did have that question asked to be verbatim.

There's also this asinine over coverage of OSU in all sports related media in the State. We're one of the few states that have as many D-I schools as we do, yet 50% (and that's a conservative amount) is dedicated to OSU.

I rarely meet OSU fandom that isn't arrogant or entitled. Whenever I do meet the rare modest one, I praise them for not being a jerk.

  3. Come on Keener....I will gladly accept any date to play in Columbus. The only way that we will ever get respect in this state is to beat Ohio State. You cant beat them if you dont play them.

Besides, I look forward to tailgating down there with people that i know and having them ask me "why are you wearing Akron stuff?" It makes my day.

I love this! Nothing beats wearing Akron stuff down in Columbus. As well as I would rather play OSU for the chance of gaining prestige in the state by beating them, then playing some other BCS school that would bring little prestige in the state.

  4. Unfortunately, I see everything through my rose colored Zippy glasses.

Prediction: the Zips will finish better than fourth, AND, the Zips will win the MAC tourney (barring another Abreu stumble)

The Zips are built around Q and Tree. Probably the two best players regardless of position in the MAC.

Mine too; but I just can't see Toledo taking the MAC over Akron. Akron NEVER gets any love... :mad_flame:

  5. Actually, he's looked good in limited work...

Thanks George for doing what you do. I logged on to read about the Zips summer camp and saw all these posts by others criticizing minute, unimportant things. I enjoy reading your articles everyday because it's good to see Zips coverage in abundance over OSU coverage for a change.

Seriously everyone? Can we just keep this post to "ZIPS FOOTBALL; SUMMER CAMP" please? I would greatly appreciate it! I'm tired of reading through a million nonsense messages from someone who's gotten their underwear in a bunch. I'd rather read about the Zips Summer Camp. If you want to complain about GT than go create a post under the random section and express your opinions there, where no one will read them or care about them.

  6. In the past two seasons every MAC school has gotten new uniforms except for us. What we have has become outdated and associated with very poor play on the field. Something like uniforms could go a long way in improving our image.

I completely agree with you. That design isn't really that bad...neither was the one before it...but it's time for a new look.

  7. Folks used to criticize UA for not having a real campus. So they build a real campus, and it's on to the next criticism.

We the alumni (and current students) should be the MOST critical of the University of Akron...Because we are the ones who care about it, want it to be better, and can inspire change. I don't believe there is any criticism that we may have that others do not have.

  8. They both get me wound up. A third thing that wounds me up is how much administrators are compensated, and the over enlistment of highly paid "administrators". This Triad, I believe, is the major problem with higher education, and is quite a drain on our economy. It isn't just money in sports, but it's the big money involved with higher education in general that is a problem; however the criticism of it in sports is absolutely warranted.

  9. Not to be a spoiler but showing up to a practice is hardly doing anything for our program. Yes I am one of his detractors, and I never liked him, but maybe if he talked up UofA for recruiting or helped raise funds for a new stadium or something, than I would be impressed. Playing in practice doesn't impress me much.

  10. Depends on how they calculate that. Do they hold transfers against the university if they go somewhere else and use our course credits to get a degree? Do they count continuing education (aka job training courses) as students who don't graduate? What about the high school kids in early enrollment that go somewhere else after they get their high school diploma?

I do believe that transfers are counted against UA, while the other two are not. In the article itself it mentions "...bachelor’s degree in six years..." but really gives no other information about how it's calculated.

It's important to point out, however, that this is a special interest Editorial written by a person who works in Washington, and I would personally summize doesn't actually know the University of Akron other than by a statistical spreadsheet. This is very important because it boils my blood when special interests attempt to use science and apply it to an arguement that they are making. The writer nebulously throws in "critics of higher education spending have pointed to recreation centers with climbing walls and lazy rivers as a prime example of unnecessary investment"...then making a reference to Akron's addition of those two things; as if those were REALLY the cause.

First who are these "critics"...throwing in conjecture like that is special interest blabber. Second; The reason that boils my blood is simple...OSU, BGSU, Can't State, Toledo (on and on and on) ALSO have those ameneties and seemingly don't warrant the writer's outrage, or have higher graduation rates. CLEARLY in this case correlation has absolutely nothing to do with causation. Sorry I'm nitpicking, but special interest blabber makes me very angry. There is a point that UA should do more about it's graduation rate, but I would take what this writer portrays with a grain of salt...because it's not a scientific or academic analysis by a long shot.

  11. VERY fascinating info. BUT, how exactly are they defining "subsidy"? Is it just student fees? How about state tax dollars?

I'd say it's probably student fees. I know a good portion of student fees goes to supporting sports...dividing the "subsidy" cost by the number of students you can easily see that it's around the cost of what student fees are payed by students each year (individually).

  12. I think we can win at two or three MAC games. UMass for sure, and one or two from Miami, Can't, or Ohio.

I'm going out on a limb here...but I'm saying Akron will win 5 games this year and shock the MAC; James Madison, UMass, Miami, Can't and Ohio will go our way.

  13. In addition to the benefits already mentioned by LZip, let me try to put a number on the projected attendance of this game. Let's say we schedule YSU out several years as it is hard to get schedules worked out in 1 year and the dark Ianello years are further behind us. People are actually considering attending an Akron game again and we are going to open the season with YSU. Let's say we put 15,000 in the stands for this game as they have a strong following. At $20 a ticket average between reserved and general admission and say half buy something to eat and or drink for $10. That's $375,000 for the game without considering other forms of revenue. Not bad for an opener especially considering we'd draw 5,000 if we played Morgan State instead.

I agree with this. What good could come out of playing Morgan State...or VMU...or James Madison? Other than a pointless win. Not only would more people be willing to attend (because they likely went to either YSU or Akron...or currently do go to either) And we could win a cool trophy unique to the showdown. We've got to understand our Niche. and YSU is a better fill in game than Morgan State...

  14. Here's one last item that is sure to ruffle some feathers and evoke a troll. When we can forecast that we are beginning to gain strength (soon) and decide to place several more established teams in a 2 away 1 home game contract on our forward OOC schedule (along with 1 and 1 non BCS conference team contracts) and we have a hole to fill on our home opener, we should attempt again to get YSU in a 1 and done here. We have tried this before and their AD balked at it, but we now have a Tressel card to play.

I like the idea. Frankly I don't know why Akron and YSU don't play more often. Side Note: I also thing (and yes I know the reasons why they don't) but Buckeye State should play Ohio teams more often.

  15. Good discussion.

I am amazed that Miami FL is coming to a MAC venue.

Would you be in favor of 2 for 1's or 3 for 1's to get that level of opponent to come to Akron? Just front-load it so we get our game 1st. Then go there.

The FCS games are a no-win scenario. Lose to Gardner-Webb or Morgan State and you are a laughing stock. As we found out 2 yrs ago.

    Just my opinion.

I agree with this whole heartedly. We got some buzz last year from the Tennessee game because a MAC team (especially the worst MAC team) is not supposed to be in any kind of contention with an SEC team, through 3 quarters. I had several Tennessee fans approach me at Neyland stadium saying "What a game!"..."I really hope to see you guys going places..." ext.

I get how a guaranteed loss each season is pessimistic; but if it is our only loss in a season...and a good game...that just seems positive to me.

  16. Nice job.

I'm with JZ84 about MT-B. Coach is looking for a difference maker in that spot. From speaking with him, it "seems" (my interpretation) coach would like one of the freshman to fill it.

    Nobody thinks Hirschman will start?

I guess most of us have assumed it would be Pohl because he's had a year under Bowden's system...and we haven't seen Hirschman play. I full heartedly believe that we will have a running between the two of them for starting QB. It's Pohl's to lose that's for sure.

  17. Holy s***! People need to calm down, it is just a GAME, chill out. I mean I could understand if this was Ollamaliztli (the Mesoamerican game where the winning or losing team would be ritually sacrificed), but it isn't.

The major takeaway here is men being men. Two guys get into physical fight, one stabs the other, friends of stabbed man kill the man who stabbed them. It seems that it had less to do with sports and more to do with a fight and people not knowing how to act like adults. I despise Can't State and Ohio University and Ohio State when it comes to sports, and I actively cheer for their teams to lose. But I don't want to get in physical altercations with their fans, especially since I have many friends who are fans of them.

People just need to remember that modesty is always the best. If you win, cool. Don't gloat too much. If you lose, well it's just a game.

  18. Should we read anything into it?

    No.

1: he's an incoming freshman...how could he be privey to this knowledge.

2: Bowden has a 5-year, $2 million contract. They wouldn't have dedicated the resources if they did not intend on keeping bowden those 5 years and not offer an extension granted the team improves, which it most certainly will).
