Jim Tressel raised Luke Fickell's salary to $250,000.00/year to be sure he doesn't go anywhere. Luke, making that money, being from Columbus, playing and coaching for OSU with Tressel, with longevity would be a fool to leave to take a MAC head coach for a few dollars more. You can bet, the OSU coaching staff along with Tressel can go anywhere in the Columbus area and get whatever they want.

Coach's coach, players play. Yes, I am very disappointed about this season already, however, players "know" and need to line up properly, hold onto the ball, handle their assignment, make kicks, catch passes, etc, etc. etc. Some say we were left with all this "talent" from JD. Last year was an embarrassment like this year. Coach I inherited this "talent" with attitudes. Look at Brian Wagner and others early on. Brian was second and third on the depth chart but "bought into the program" like others (which I commend them for). It seemed the tail was wagging the dog last year and Coach I will not tolerate (which I commend him). Many did not buy into his program and are no longer with this team. Currently we only have approx. 75 scholarship players when allowed 85. Next year, after what we lose and with 25 allowed per year, we may be up to low 80's. It will be a few years before we are able to max. out with scholarships. There are 34 freshmen/redshirt freshmen on this team. (45% of the curent scholarship players) JD did NOT leave US with much, let alone Coach I and his staff. We can all "second guess" every decision made, we do it in business, sports, etc. everyday, however, the players, Coach I, the staff, TW, LP are more disappointed than anyone on this board. Yesterday, Gardner Webb was a "well coached" team and that is what having a coach for 12 years can do for you. Unfortunately, this will NOT turnaround overnite, try to accept it (even as difficult as it is) and support this group. It needs you more NOW than ever.

GoZips, after all the years of Akron athletics you have been through, I would hope you would be a little more optimistic than angry or sad. RI and staff need to pick up the pieces left by the JD era and no, RI is not the most personable PR kind of guy, however, he, the staff and players are diligently working toward a much more successful program. At least he has not been out blowing smoke up everyones you know what saying how great they are as coaches and making all kinds of guarantees, blah, blah, blah. Would I like to see undefeated seasons, most definitely, however, I would be ecstatic if we are just competitive and in games, and wins will come, than the embarrassment from the JD era. Get on the phone, renew your tickets and be the fan you have been for years and years.

For immediate release June 7, 2010 VAN HORNE NAMED ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR FOR DEVELOPMENT AKRON , Ohio – George Van Horne has been named Associate Athletics Director for Development, UA Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill announced Monday. “We are thrilled that George is rejoining our athletic department and remaining at his alma mater in this important leadership role,” Wistrcill said. “There is no one more qualified than a former Zip – and one with nearly 10 years of fundraising experience at Akron – to champion our cause with his fellow student-athletes and all of our donors.” Van Horne, who has raised more than $25 million for the University of Akron since 2001, boasts a resume of more than nine years of fundraising experience – all at the University. Van Horne served as the Director of Development for Athletics from 2001-04 and most recently was the Director of Development for Major Gifts at the University for the past three years. “I am excited to be working with our donors, alumni, friends of Zips Athletics, coaches and the entire Athletics staff to help shape the future of our student-athletes by building a sustainable, financially strong department through philanthropic support,” Van Horne said. Van Horne, who was a pitcher on the Zips’ baseball team from 1994-97, played an integral role in the University completing its “Aspire. Attain. Advance.” Capital Campaign, which reached its goal one year ahead of schedule and $106.5 million above the initial campaign target of $500 million. Over the last three years, Van Horne secured transformational gifts for the University and the programs the gifts support. In 2007, he brought in the $4.64 million Louis and Freda Stile gift to name the Athletics Field House, the largest gift from an individual in Zips Athletics history. Later that same year, he raised $2.1 million for The Margaret Clark Morgan Endowment Directorship for The Archives of the History of American Psychology. The former Zips southpaw began his professional career as a graduate assistant in the University’s Department of Athletics in 1999. After nine months, Van Horne was named Interim Assistant Athletics Director/Compliance Coordinator and eventually became the Compliance Coordinator and Events Manager. In 2001, he moved to athletics development and quickly earned the respect of colleagues and donors while raising funds to support the new Athletics Field House, Indoor Golf Facility, Lee Jackson Football Practice Field and restructured the Men’s Basketball Seat License program, which generated an additional $156,000 from the previous year. Van Horne was the Director of Development for the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s oldest and largest college, from 2004-07. During that time, he designed the college’s $50 million capital campaign and the $30 million capital campaign for the Archives of the History of American Psychology. A double graduate of the University of Akron , Van Horne, who will officially begin his new position on June 14, earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science. He lives with his wife, Beth, and daughter, Lillian, in Tallmadge , Ohio .

Casino Night August 28th at Infocision Stadium is being finalized and will be for ALL sports and not just one. This will be an evening that "everyone" will be able to participate in plus you will have opportunities to meet ALL coaches and spouses. More information will be coming! -
It would be nice if TW and the administration have a representative from ZN on the search committee along with there "usual" type of committee members.

Wistrcill looking for a specific type of coach
wadscarman replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
That salary is ok, but bonus it with attendance bonus, wins bonus, mac championship bonus, bowl appearance bonus, bowl win bonus, graduation bonus and longevity bonus. Then the $380K should be able to turn into $500K-$750K. Produce, get paid. -
According to the Coastal Carolina forum, it seems they really like Hunter.http://www.coastalfans.com/forum/index.php?topic=12077.0

RowdyZip, are you talking about the Tap House or Brubakers with your comment?

I thought they were only using the grass area if there was a sell out.

I will agree that winning is part of putting butts in seats. However and unfortunateley, we do not have enough Zips "fans" that bleed blue and gold like we do in the area that will continually fill the stadium. There are semi interested Akron area people(I can not use the word fans here) that will attend Zips athletic events if it is convenient. There are approx. 30,000 students and faculty with over 100,000 plus alumni in the area and even most of these are the semi interested people I am referring to. Winning will "help", but the athletic department and the MAC have got to quite making things "convenient" with TV and "forcing" those semi interested fans to come to events if they want to see it. Everything that has been said with this topic are pieces of the puzzle.
-
I am not against TV and know it has a benefit for the league and the schools. However, any home game needs to be "blacked out" or whatever. The MAC and the schools owe it to their business supporters to get people into their establishments on game day and into seats to see the business marketing efforts throughout the stadium.
-
I am sure it is from the league, but WHY televise home games???????????? The league and all MAC schools want and need attendance but continually televise these games. This will continue to be a problem to build a fan base when it is so easy just to sit at home and watch a game. Away games, obviously no problem. Televising home games has got to stop it you want to put people in the stands.

Do that out on the street, it's assault. Why wouldn't today be an assault? That foul had nothing to do with the "game". It was an assault period end.

Or IF they play for him. Some early rumors out of Indiana that the players won't play unless Mc Callumgets the gig. If true, I hope Indiana continues to travel the high road and pulls their scholarships. Enough is enough.According to the ABJ this morning, Senior captain DJ White, Armon Bassett, Jordan Crawford, Jamarcus Ellis, DeAndre Thomas and Brandon McGee skipped Dakich's first practice Friday. It is unknow whether they will play Saturday against the Northwestern. Doesn't sound like they are wrapping their arms around Dakich.

Does anyone know if Army is bringing their drill team for half time show? If anyone remembers when they came in to the bowl, they brought their drill team. It is a very impressive halftime event.

My understanding talking to some of the coaches, Ronnie Seward is really impressive and should get playing time and that Jermiah is in phenomenal shape. Jeremiah has really taken the off season seriously, working out, is running like 3 miles + per day. One of the coaches sees him contending for MAC player of the year. With Jeremiah and the rest of the senior leadership, they are really looking forward to another great year.

Now that the dust has settled, I like everyone else was very disappointed in how we were treated, especially by the NIT selection. I feel bad for Dru and Romeo that there college carreers ended this way. However, for Keith, the team and the program, this snubbing has probably given MORE exposure than what Miami or Toledo seem to have gotten. I have never heard as much talk on "the street", on the news, on the radio about Akron basketball as I have heard the past few weeks. Even though we would have preferred a different type of "hype" and "exposure", let's hope this excitement for this team and the university flows over to football and basketball programs this fall.

MAC needs to return to 1 division
wadscarman replied to Zipgrad1990's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
If we played everyone two times in the MAC, we would not need OOC games. I am sure, we are not the only MAC program having these scheduling problems, and for all these NCAA brilliant individuals on the selection committees we would be playing all D1 programs which should assist us in RPI's etc.
