The more mags i read the more confused i get. First - Personally i don't trust any of them on the Zips. While we did lose a lot of our "D" the team did fairly well at the the end of 2007 depending on your perspective. If not for a bizzare fumble we might still be playing the Fiami game, and did well for most of the CMU game. Sure they were both losses in a season who's main bright spot was beating Cant at their last Rubber Bowl appearance. But why not give the zips the benefit of doubt here? Down in Carolina they are predicting the Heels to challenge for the division title because they played close in what was a sucky season, which granted was an improvement over 2006 But SI has the zips losing every MAC conference game??? Does JD not get any credit for going through the painful process of removing the teams cancer(s). We played it close at the end of the season with a depleted and then tired roster... that should count for something. For me the biggest question is whether or not JD has taken his team back. If he has, we'll likely see the heart showed by the team that beat NCST return. Does anyone have any perspective on this element of the 2008 Zips squad?? If my gut is right , we could be the all time MAC dark horse.... Second - What if i'm wrong? What if JD did lose the team?? Is it time to start over or is our 4-5 year coaching carrousel holding us back. How much time does a coach at Akron need to build not just a team but a program??? BBSU offers a perspective but again, that is a top tier team that periodically falls as opposed to one that periodically rises. Yes new facilities play a part in the equation, but they don't qualify as a panacea, just ask NCST........

Right now, I have no idea. As I've said before, we have so many "if's" that we could be last, or we could win the East. With camp started, the pre-season excitement is really starting to pick up and thoughts of winning the MAC are popping into my mind. I start every year convinced we are gonna win the MAC and usually get smacked back down to earth in short order. So this season, I'm just start forming my opinion once the season starts.

I just read that in SI tonight. Predicted to go 1-11??? That's embarassing.I will predict one thing: The Zips might lose 8 games, but J.D. Brookhart will not lose the team's respect. His job... that's another question.

I saw the SI rankings too. I think that SI doesn't do any research on teams outside of BCS conferences. They just make up randon BS and assume nobody cares.

Looks to me like after the top 60, they used the tried and true method of picking names out of a hat to rank the remainder.

while I doubt it's completely random, I would agree that those rags don't spend more than a remedial amount of time trying to research picks outside of the top 50. All they probably do is look at last year's record. Then look the players that were lost and their stats. If that looks bad, they then probably take a quick glance at the projected ranks of recruits from the last two years. If that doesn't offset the losses, in their mind, then they take last years record and reduce it accordingly.Basically, they don't have anything substantial to go on.Their system works half the time and it means they don't have to spend hours and hours doing research and phone calls, because doing that for nearly 80 teams that they don't even care about means months of work. They aren't trying to do actual work. All they want is publish something.

Count me in the "early season optimism" club! I think this is just part of being a "fan" for a lot of us.
