Z-Pouch
After all of the Football promotions this fall, why not give a little push to the basketball program ? They are on a roll at home, contending for the Eastern division and have key games coming up after Saturday. Central Michigan/Sat game is a great opportunity to generate interest in the program at the halfway point. Get people out on Saturday and they may come back on Tuesday for a good Ball State team. Give some tickets away, maybe some promotion $$$, incentives to the students, Freebies -- Not enough people are seeing the changes in the program and that it is fun to be back at JAR. This team deserves some marketing promos and people in the stands. After the Central Michigan game, it would make little sense to run big promos as the remaining games should draw well on their own merits with paying customers -- Can't State, Miami, and Toledo games should have no problems if Zips continue to improve. Seems to me, it's worth the investment to get 6k in the building on the last Saturday night home game and at the halfway point of the MAC season. Anyone else got some ideas to throw out ? Drawing 3k a game just doesn't cut it for the effort this team puts out night after night. Go Zips. Get one on the road in Herdville. Zip Watcher
I'm with you .. I was thinking the other day that there must be some "Jam the JAR" promotion they could do that would get people there. Maybe mix it in with an Akron Food Bank non-perishable drive or something where you get a free GA ticket when you buy 1 and bring some canned goods or something. That way, you'd get some press for community building and still have some gate $$$ to defray costs. If they could handle giving away as many tickets as they did for the Marshall game, which represented 1/5th of the home football schedule .. 2500 seats to one game that is 1/15th of the hoops home slate shouldn't break any budgets. The hurdle here may be a high one for the first game, but if they keep up what we've seen thus far, people will come back on thier own. What sucks is that after all the good hoops last week, there's no mention of "what you're missing here in Akron" in the local paper. Nice support by the hacks. I see them at the games every time .. are they just using the press pass for free entertainment?? Regardless, I'll be there with multiple people in tow .. a win in Huntington and it's going to be hard to keep my expectations in check. The East might be in reach here and now! Go Zips. Guest ***GUEST_Zippy
This Saturday is the annual Credit Union / Hall of Fame game accoding to the area radio ad I heard today. That game is uaually the biggest game of the hoops season for crowds. You really cannot compare football and basketball promotions. The NCAA football attendance rule had the UA staff up aqgainst the wall - no such rule for basketball. Also, it's easier to promote 5 football games with purchased media than 15 basketball games. You can spend a similar amount of money and not recognize the same effect because the season is 4 months long.

Akron Hooper
Just found this board, by accident. You should really promote it more MODS. Regardless, I was at the EMU game and am not as impressed by Akron as some of you. I am not an alum, but did play basketball at a local D-II school many years back. I love basketball and watch all types as much as possible. This Akron team is better than lsat year's team but is still very inconsistent. In time they may be pretty good though so I will continue to come back. My biggest concern of this team is how they only play well at home. This team has won 9 games, but only 2 on the road. Unless they can learn to win on the road they will not get over the hump this season. This team has also played no one on the non MAC schedule, which leads me to believe that this team is being coddled by their coach. I would do the same thing but that has got to have an effect on the crowds. I listened to the postgame show on the radio after the game on Saturday night and Coach Dambrot said it best, even he would not come out to see his team play the way they showed up the last 10 minutes. As soon as this team figures out that the game lasts 40 minutes and not 30 minutes more fans will come. A win on the road to run a 3-game streak would also be a nice touch. Z-Pouch
I know the Credit Union game is always fairly well attended but I guess I was thinking big here - over 5k or pushing whatever the new lowered capacity is of the JAR and creating a big buzz. In order to do that, I think it is going to take additional promos and some freebies. Credit Union game alone - may pull an additional 1k, total of 4k. The other seats are going to be empty anyway so why not float a few additional handouts to try and fill them. My point really is that this is a great game to give it a try and possibly build more momentum. It's an investment in if/when the conference race heats up. In some ways, since it's already the credit union game, you're halfway home as some exposure already is in the bag, exploiting the exposure and being a little more generous with the tics could land some people. I didn't see the promos for the students - that’s great and hopefully the support will come out. No one has mentioned it on the board but the student section by the UA bench was great at the EMU game - hire those guys again if you can !!! With school back, it will be interesting to see if the students have taken notice. I see the point of another poster on the Basketball and Football marketing and situations but with the relative additional size of what you're trying to draw for a basketball game (maybe +2500-3000 above your averages) compared to massive football promotions trying for +10-15k above, it seems the BB promo costs would far less and not as complex. Z-Pouch
800 Tickets Left per GoZips.com today. Sounds like pretty good crowd if everyone gets thru the snow. FYI - Capacity of the JAR now listed at 5500. Remember the days of 6500 - too bad.
Zip Watcher
I'd love to find the box score from the OVC final game against MTSU in '86. I'm sure there were more than 6500 in there, with all of the students being let in w/ ID. To this day I still remember how hot and humid it was in there. I always thought the initial capacity was higher than that.

Got it at the Coach's Clinic held before the game (great event, BTW). They were supposed to raffle off some Giant Eagle stuff after the EMU game? Must have missed it? I'll trade you a blue ticket for one. I didn't hear either announcement (hard to believe, since the JAR acoustics are so good)...maybe I just wasn't expecting it since it was specified to be at game's end. I don't check out the team shop every game and don't have much use for the info desk. Oh well...the event was very nice and my son had a good time. mnhouse
there are some balls remaining, but i believe they are being used for promotions when Can't State visits Rhodes Arena, and other kids club promotions as well.
