Captain Kangaroo
Will Hipsher "pull and Owens" and leave, or will he accept his reassignment? I would have to believe he'll end up on someone's bench next season as an assistant...maybe at Texas Tech? If Bryan Hipsher shows up on the court next season in anything other than a mascot's suit, or with a trumpet in his hand, I'll explode. Will Nick Meyers get some PT in 2004-5? Wonder what the three 2004 recruits think about this development? Ditto for the existing players. Who will comprise Dambrot's staff? How long will it take Ellen Alexander to bring up the racial thing at the press conference in an attempt to embarass Dambrot? If Dambrot is any good, you'd think he'll stick with the program for quite a while? The U of A has really stuck its neck out on this one...even hiring him as an assistant was risky. I think that, coupled with the fact that he's an alum, should help in keeping him a Zips coach for some time. IF, of course, he can win some games. As cruel as it sounds, learning of Hipsher's reassignment really made me happy..."popping champagne corks and running around the neighborhood naked screaming 'woooo hoooo'" happy! My season tickets will be renewed for 2004-5. I feel better about being at the Gund tomorrow. Not great, but better. For "not having this idea cemented until after the Ball State loss," MT sure made a quick decision on the hire? From the time Hipsher was gone until the time of Dambrot's press conference is about 21 1/2 hours? Seems like he must have at least considered the possibility for a day or two beforehand? zipper
You're right I'm sure. He had to have a lot of different scenarios running through his head as possibilities by the end of the season. By the time it actually had to happen he probably had a very good idea of where he wanted things to go. I think the U already stuck their neck out three seasons ago in hiring KD. If hiring him was a problem it would have been an issue then. And Captain, I'm surprized you're not playing hooky and going to the press conference for everyone else here. Z.I.P.
Doesn't look like an auspicious start for UAM/media relations. The promised link to a video feedback has not materialized on gozips.com. Too bad!
Captain Kangaroo
And Captain, I'm surprized you're not playing hooky and going to the press conference for everyone else here. I'm taking tomorrow off, so I figured I should show up for work today. Besides, it was supposed to be on the web!
Zips Win!
CK, While you were popping champagne corks, I decided to celebrate as well with a few cold ones myself here in northern Summit county. But before we get ahead of ourselves, this firing can best be described as "better late than never". This reassignment could of and should have taken place years ago. After witnessing the debacle at Cincinnati followed-up by a 17 turnover half at Radford and then an 18 turnover half at Hampton, DH should have been fired then. So, I don't believe for a moment that this idea wasn't cemented until after the BSU loss. Short of an NCAA bid, this decision was made a long-time ago. Of course Dambrot will stick with the program if he is any good. However, to be any good, he must begin recruiting better players on a consistent basis. Division 3 players like B-Hip, and Nick Myers will not cut it. Where are the 6-5 G/F types who can break down the defense and hit the 8-10-12 footer? One guy on the team (DP) like this is a recipe for disaster. Where is the "thick" 6-8 guy in the middle? Time will tell, but Futch may belong to the above category as well. As for B-Hip, it's time to put an end to this chatter. KD will not commit coaching suicide and play this guy. KD, like everyone else, will say the right things however his playing time at UA is done. It's just unfortunate he cost us that game two years ago. Go Zips, get me to the dance and then worry about busting out of the JAR.
kangaroo
Though I agree on your view of B Hipsher as a D3 player - I have to diasagree with your comments on Futch and Meyers. I am optimistic that we now have a coach that knows how to motivate the kds and get the best out of them, rather than tear them down and belittle them. The game of basketball is so much a head game - and when someone is messing with your head - it messes with your abilities to play. Time will tell - but I believe you will see a different level of playing from everyone on the team. Specifically - more playing together as a team and a stronger defensive team than we've seen in the Hipsher years.
Guest Guest_SoFlaZip
Stronger defense implys some sort of defense existed. The problem was that there was nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn defense PERIOD. Not this year, not last year, not one damn year during his tenure. That has ALWAYS been my frustration noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn defense. Being out defensed is one thing. Having nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn defense is another. I recall going to a Can't game a few years ago when the Zips were in what appeared to be a 1-4 defense, i.e. one guard at the foul line and the other four players guardng the base line. Can't must have broken the national record that game for uncontested twos and threes -and the Zips were favored. It was embarrassing. DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE I TRUST IN MT !!!!!!!! kangaroo
Completely agree with you - I was being polite when I said "stronger defense" - I am totally with you - and thanks for the laugh from your response!
