My only outstanding question...Does Dustin Basch get a Zips grey shirt, or has someone offered him a scholarship?

Dustin Basch was not recruited by the Zips or any other D1 school and is heading to Ashland on a partial scholarhship.

Scroll down in that article until where it lists the schools. Akron got a TON of WPIAL players, while Can't State got none.......NONE!!!! Are they not recruiting the area or what???

Will someone please help explain the WPIAL to me?

I had always assumed when I heard it referred to that the Western PA Interscholastic Athletic League was a "regular conference", like the Suburban or Metro Leagues or Western Reserve Conference in the Akron area. But I'm getting the impression from what I've read that there are a lot more schools in this "league" than any ordinary conference. How many schools does the WPIAL have (approximately), and how large a geographic region does it cover- all of Western PA?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been wondering this either.

The WPIAL is not a conference, it's a governing body much like the OHSAA. Pennsylvania doesn't really have conferences either, they have divisions that schools don't choose to join, you are assigned there based on the size of your school. In PA, there is the WPIAL and the PIAA. The WPIAL is for Western Pennsylvania schools only, and the PIAA is for the whole state. All Western Pennsylvania schools are in both the WPIAL and the PIAA. Schools first compete to win there division in the WPIAL and make the WPIAL playoffs. The championship games of the WPIAL playoffs are played at Heinz Field, and if a team wins that they go on to play in the PIAA playoffs against schools from Eastern Pennsylvania. It's kind of a weird system, but that's how they do things over there.

I grew up in w. Pa--moved to NE Ohio in 1960--Haven't paid alot of attention since then but here's how it it used to work. WPIAL = schools essentially from Williamsport west.

The PIAA = every other school in Pa., WPIAL and PIAA have playoffs individually then WPIAL and PIAA play for state Championship.

In basketball, there are no leagues--schools compete in sections that serve as leagues, at the end of the regular ONLY the section champs move on to District play then Regional Play then WPIAL and PIAA play for state champs.
