Chris Jacquemain's play is obviously suspect...who else do we have?

I checked out the 2008 depth chart to see who else can play for us besides CJ, whether it be before Jaq graduates(and unless he starts becoming much, much, more consistent, that should be the case), or after he leaves us. The guys under Jaq are: 5 Matt Rodgers 6-2, 200, RFr10 Kade Wagner 6-2, 215, RFr14 KC Patterson 6-3, 210, JrHas anyone seen any of these guys? Do any of them impress you? Do any of them seem capable of taking the starting spot next season(assuming Jaq keeps playing the way he has), and if not, who should we look out for in two years? Who is the future of this program? It's obvious that this university is making some serious strides toward competetiveness, on and off the field. I think that it's important that we distinguish who will lead our team down the road, and who will help mold the university's image over the next few years. Also, any other big recruits that may actually be within UA's grasp? The new stadium is a big sell to high school kids.

So included in this discussion of bashing Jacq are we going to include the many, many, many balls that are dropped by the receivers. Bowser makes great catches, but misses about half of them that are thrown to him. Two interceptions yesterday bounced off of receivers hands. But this board is right -- Jacq is the problem. How about the pass that Cruz missed -- that kid should have been on the bench the rest of the game after that one. I'm not saying Jacq is the best quarterback I've seen, but the wide receivers and Joe Moorehead should all be under equal scrutinty.

That's right Big Zip. Execution is part of the game but knowing what play to call in different game situations is on the coaching staff and JM specifically. Four straight three and outs in the second half was awful and the plays we ran were plays we used over and over in this game and every game we've played. The play book must consist of 25-30 plays. Of the three interceptions, two of them were from bad reads. One of the tips was thrown into double coverage and the other a db or lb jumped the route and had a nice interception. Jaq is doing a pretty good job if you look at all the drops, tips, and yes, poor reads. He's maturing as a qb and I think he has played better than some on this forum believe.

WR drops are a huge issue, agreed. I'm sorry if I misled anyone to believe that I'm putting all of the blame on Jaq, I'm not that naive.I agree with you that Jaq is maturing somewhat, but I'm going to need to see more before the end of this season to be completely convinced. He will be a senior next season, and the maturing phase should be long gone by then. Every game is a big game the rest of this season, and if Jaq doesn't progress consistently each game(and more so than he has), than I believe its time to start reevaluating our other QB options.Believe me, I'm pulling for Jaq to do well just as much as anyone, but he can only blame misreads on immaturity for so long.

crap, sorry for the double post. The wireless in my residence hall is horrid.
lol. JD is not one to change his qb and barring injury, Jaq will play the rest of the season. Matt will need to crush him in spring drills to catch any HIGH snaps from center. Bates needs to handle this problem. It's another factor that hurts qb play. Jaq is jumping for most shotgun snaps. Get this fixed!!!

Thats not correct... Bowser has probably dropped 8 balls the whole season but has 35 receptions for 443 yds.. There is no way that he misses half of the balls that Jaq throws to him. He had 3 drops in the Can't game which is unacceptable but he catches every other tough ball thrown to him. I have all of the games recorded on my DVR with the exception of the Wisconsin game so Im going off stats from the whole season.

Bottom Line...we aren't going to see even a hint of a change at QB because of one poor game. Plus, Jac has been playing for about a year and a half now, do you really want to start the process of developing a new QB all over again at this point?I was at the spring game, and saw about 4 QBs play. I can't recall that any one of them stuck out.

I wasn't calling for a change after one game. I said if overtime, Jacq still looks like crap, then its time to look around at what else we have. I'm not even saying we have anything better to go to, but at the same time we can't just stick with Jacq because hes been here longer. If we followed that formula, Owens would still be coaching here.

Jacq won't be replaced for anything but an injury. Stop worrying about it.He's surrounded by players who don't help his situation. High snaps almost every play, WRs that drop 50% of their passes, and a running game that isn't going anywhere (unless we get Johnson back or bring out Torrence).

While I was too busy sitting on the beach yesterday to watch the game, I'll give an opinion based upon what I read* on this board and the little I have seen him this year.I am a huge Ben Roethlisberger fan (in fact, I am going to watch him play in person tonight) because I think he is a winner. That doesn't mean that there have not been times when I wanted to shoot my TV watching him play. Sometimes he drives me absolutely bonkers. With that said, there is no other QB I would want to have the ball with the game on the line and the team the Steelers have. Guys like Carson Palmer are noon QBs and guys like Roethlisberger are 3:45 QBs**.Jacq seems to be at a point when the game is on the line he comes through after stinking up the field for a period of time during the game. Yesterday may have been a watershed day for the kid and maybe the team. Who knows? In fact, the Zips score a lot of points in the fourth quarter when it counts. I remember a past Zips QB who always looked great for three quarters and then did nothing spectacular to win games in the fourth. Losing follows that QB around like the cloud of dust around Pig Pen in Peanuts. The QB must be a winner. I think Jacq is just what he is and is good enough to win six games if the M*A*S*H unit could fix up some of the other players. JD had good success with QBs like him at Pitt. He doesn't deserve to be called a "winner" just yet because he has actually won nothing, but let's see what happens with him. There is no need to panic at this point. What Akron really needs is someone other than DK in the backfield. I've been saying since I saw him play at NCState that he runs east/west too much. JD is loyal to a fault a lot of times. The problem with changing QB is what if it does not work? The season is over because the vote of no confidence has been given to the original starter and you can not go back to him expecting the team to respond. The Zips are 3-3 with good talent. There is no reason they should not win five or six games this season. Jacq should remain the starting QB and JD should not monkey around with putting back up players in for a series or two.* Based upon what I read on this board means the following logic. 1. Browns fans are stupid. 2. Everything Browns fans want ends up blowing up in their faces. 3. A lot of Browns fans read this board and are Zips fans. 4. A lot of fans posting on this board are stupid. 5. A lot of fans on this board want Rogers which means Browns fans want Rogers. 6. If Rogers gets in the game, the exact opposite of what Browns/Zips fans want to happen will happen. 7. Like him or not, Jacq stays in the game.** Carson Palmer is a noon QB because when he comes out to warm up at noon, he looks great. He is tall, has a huge arm and looks like a great NFL QB. The problem with the noon QB is the game starts at 1:00 and he doesn't look as good as he did at noon. At two o'clock he looks worse than he did at one. At three, he looks worse than he did at two. At 3:45 when the game is on the line he is a disaster. Guys who are winners can stink it up early, but rally late to win (see last Monday night).

Are Wagner and Patterson still with the team? I thought one or both of them either transferred or quit football to concentrate on academics. After Jacq., there is Matt Rodgers and Jordan Miller. I thought I saw another QB with the team that I didn't notice before. I think he wears #2 and his name was like Wackerly or something like that. I'll have to check but those are the ones I know and I thought Wagner and Patterson aren't on the team.

I am soooo sick of you guys calling for Torrence. He's totally unproven and new to the system. Last year you wanted Brinson and we see how that turned out. Go with the guys who are there week in and week out, practicing hard and committing to the Akron system. I'm sure you're sick of hearing me screaming for Tuzze. But come on, one carry for 11 yds and then we don't see him the rest of the game????? Last week 4 carries for 21 yds. and a pass for 8. I'm not saying to make him the primary back but mix it up a little bit. Run double backs sometimes. The offensive line was having a tough time so put him in to provide some extra protection for Jacq. I like Bruce but he can't do it all. Will BWill never return a punt?? They've got Bruce doing everything and a few of you didn't even want to see him at receiver a couple of games ago. I think Moorehead wants to see us fail. Maybe he thinks he'll get the job if Brookhart goes down. I think the Can't game was the poorest use of personnel that I've seen this season. It seems to be getting worse instead of better. We get our defense looking better and the offense leaves them on the field for the rest of the game. Come on! My grandma could call a better game--from the grave. And are the pass plays that are being called leaving our receivers out to dry??? I think JD needs to have a real heart to heart with Moorehead. Whatever the game plan was for Sat----it sucked! I hear Johnson will be back this week. Don't kill him! Rotate different guys in. Keep them fresh and keep BG guessing. We've got the talent to win this! Use it!

Haha, perhaps it is the Browns fan in me that is speculating a QB change, but lets keep this on topic. It is a zip forum, not a worthlesburger forum. The idea of a QB change as of right now is of course ludicrous. Let's say we win one game the rest of the season, and Jacq's play just stays the same, or gets worse. So, in your own terminology, what if Jacq is no winner at all, but distiunguishes himself as a loser? Then would it hurt to look at other options? Of course not. You basically just repeated my original argument. See how things go the rest of the season, and unless progress is made, start looking into our backups.

As of the actual back ups, I have no clue. I just looked at the first link I could get.

I don't think Morehead is getting the ball to the best players often enough. Is Bruce our most talented player? He has guts, but he seems to be the number one option way too much. How about some screen passes or something. We have good speed out of the backfield. C Jacq is usually accurate within 20 yards or so. Outside that, well, that's not his strength. While it's obvious Jacq will never be Charlie Frye, or even Luke Getsy, I like the fact he's not quitting, ie, just check out the pass to Bowser for the TD. We just need to offense to cater more to his strengths.

So the general consensus seems to be, dont give up on Jacq, but let him mature. The most important aspect that we should be focusing on is the play of those around him(i.e. WR drops, high snaps, etc.) and the somewhat skeptical playcalling of morehead. In another topic someone mentioned that JD needs to have a serious talk with Morehead. I agree. Some of those calls are absoluetely horrible. I don' think morehead has any sort of hidden agenda as the poster mentioned, but he still needs to be talked to.Lets just give Jacq some time, and see how it goes. We have a good squad, I just sure hope we maximize the potential.

For the past two years on offense, and the past 5 years on defense, I've noticed one consistent thing: the playcalling and schemes aren't set up to take of advantage of the talent we have on the field. We're running plays designed for player types we just don't have. Or maybe we do have players that fit the required style but the ball goes to someone else who is expected to perform just as well with a different skill set.JD needs to sit down with his coordinators and position coaches and draw up some stuff that takes advantage of our players' talents. No running sideways with a RB who does best in between the tackles. No passing behind the line of scrimmage to WRs who are best used as deep threats. No more using our great DL guys in a scheme that they aren't suited for. And for the love of all that is good, NO MORE HIGH SNAPS.

Week after week we continue to see the one glaring problem that is killing the Zips offense. No, its notChris Jacquemain, nor the running backs or the receivers. It is the constant high snap from the center. The snap distracts CJ11 from the play. His vision is blocked by having his hands in front of his face. That means he loses sight of the players, both offense and defense for a half a second or so. The brainthen has to recalculate all the data. While all this may be just a fraction of a second it is long enoughto cause throws behind the receiver (a common occurrence), throws into double coverage or worse,no time to look to all the receivers resulting in myopic decisions often resulting in not throwing to thebest target. All this makes Jacquemain look bad.The Zips need to go back to basics staring with the high snap. That bad snap is killing the offense. You can blame Chris or any other skill player and never get to the root cause ... the high snaps.I also agree with many of the posters that the offensive play calling is atrocious. The 3-3-5 defense is an experiment gone bad. The 3-3-5 needs to go into the trash heap of history. The 3-3-5 should be renamed the Cant Skate defense because the 3-3-5 SUX.

Both Wagner and Patterson are gone. Patterson was terrible. He was so bad he got kicked off the scout team, because he couldnt give the defense a decent look. Wagner transferred to ashland i believe. The depth chart now reads. Jacq, Matt, Jordan Miller, and Jerred Wackerly. Jacq is our QB live with it. This board always wants something different. Jacq is playing decent football right now. he looks great sometimes and not so good other times. Most QB's are this way. But there is a reason Jacq is and remains our QB.

I'm never in the crowd of putting in another quarterback once the season has started. That always turns out poorly (just look at the Browns). However, there does get to be a point when a bad quarterback is a bad quarterback. In the Cinci game, I swear Jacq couldn't get within 5 yards of a WR when he threw it for more than 15yds. He is fairly consistent when it comes to hitting a receiver under 15, but then the WRs don't catch those passes. He also does a HORRIBLE job of looking at the receiver he is going to throw it to. Every toss at Can't I knew exactly where he was going to throw it because he never looks at anybody else. The defense picks up on this too. If he keeps this up, the INTs are going to be close to breaking records at the end of the season.I wouldn't take him out yet though, but there definitely needs to be something done with the offense system. I think Jacq would be better off with a modified west coast offense. He does very well when he can take a good 3-5 step drop and pass right away. He really looks lost out there when the only receiver he is going to throw to for that play is covered. He also really needs to learn how to get rid of the ball. I saw far too many times against Can't when he could have thrown the ball away but instead just ducked down and waited for the sack.

Agree. The reason he remains our QB is because he is the best one on the roster. While this isn't saying a whole lot, JD's hands are tied. Sure, I would like to see Rogers get a series or two, but we would need to get a huge lead for JD to do this.As noted, the offense will struggle to score points and CJ will struggle to play consistently with what we got. Coaches always talk about QB's having "it". I don't see the "it" with CJ and now is not the time to find someone who has it. This needs to be done in February. (signing day)All of the above will continue to hurt the offense and hamper his development.-The high snaps.-Virtually no running game. DK may be healthy and doing his best, but his best won't cut it. Alex Allen continues to be a huge void in the offense and we need to get someone else some snaps at RB or we are in trouble.-The drops.-If his first option in the pattern is covered, he completion percentage drops considerably.-He is no threat wih his feet.-The long pass plays (calls) on third and short.-The delayed play calling at the LOS. This is unwatchable at times.

I can remember one instance in overtime at the Can't game. We were driving into the north endzone, right into the rowdies, and he had a play clock sitting right in front of him. All that he had to do was look up and call a TO. Instead, he continues to mess around and costs us five yards. That could've cost us the W.

;) i read the notes on JD's press conference...he VERY specifically talks about the BAD decision making and UNWILLINGNESS to run on the part of the QB...well duh...thats not news to anyone, certainly not JD...he finally realizes that his job is probably on the line and MORE IMPORTANTLY, now the ZIPS have a shot to control their own destiny if they can beat b.g. on saturday..the schedule has gone good opponent, bad opponent, good opponent, bad opponent...its not a coincidence that against the good teams...the wisky game gets something of a pass...that QB play has contributed significantly to the loss and almost cost the can't game..Jacquemain HAS to come up with a signature game NOW...with b.g. losing last saturday another loss to the Zips puts them in a hole and gives the Zips the HAMMER...believe it or not...with Jacquemain playing at his present level that doesn't....any word on JOHNSON?

if we can run the ball then cj is fine at qb.if you look at the games we won army/cuse.the zips were abel to pound the balland the passing game opened up.if the zips can't run the ball we are in big trouble.teams are not scared of cj's running ability.they can send a pass rush knowing he is no threat to run.i would think by now most teams know the zips will not throw deep passes either.the coaching staff needs to have c.j. throw some deep passes.even if they are not completedit opens up the short passing game.this is strictly play calling on the coaches.how many times do the zips throw over 20 yards.instead they throw bubble screens on third on long.if i am a d-cordinator defending the zips is not that difficult.our qb is no threat to scramble to make defenses pay for blitzes, and the playing calling is all screens/short passes.i wish for one time on first down they would throw it deep just to keep the defense honest.
