There is no he or she whatsoever. Actually it's kind of creepy.
ZippyRulz
One of you has to be lying. I think the beanie and the pouch create the conflict. Beanies are normally seen on boys but boys don't have pouches. I think Zippy is therefore androgynous.
Blue & Gold
People, people, people, Zippy is a boy! If you were a college student creating a kangaroo mascot, would it have crossed your mind that, technically, a male kangaroo shouldn't have a pouch?! No way. If you're creating a kangaroo mascot it's gonna have a pouch. In fact, it never crossed my mind, till it was pointed out about a year ago, that technically, Zippy shouldn't have a pouch. It's simply a delightful anomoly! Here's a touching documentary on The Real Zippy Enjoy!
Zip Watcher
Zippy is most certainly a female kangaroo ...why she would need to be male just to intimidate opponents is beyond me.after all ...Zippy sleeps with the light on because the dark is afraid of the Zips! Blue & Gold
Zippy is irrefutably a boy! Shame on you guys! No guy likes to be confused with a girl. You guys are going to make Zippy embarrassed to show his face at the Rubberbowl on Saturday! Here is even more proof of Zippy's manhood!. (Poor Zippy, I'm sure his fragile male ego has taken enough of a beating as it is!) That is, unless Zippy is a lesbian? ...

GoZips88
I've come to the conclusion that we have a transgender male Zippy ... originally created female, became male thanks to modern mascot medicine and fan outcry and simply uses the pouch these days to hide kids' hats, cheerleader pom-poms and such. Come on folks! Get with this diversity and inclusion thing! Love Zippy for who/what she-he is!
goodthts
Zippy is one of only eight female college mascots in the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._college_mascots. Hit 'CTRL F' then type in female. Zippy is one of a select few....and she's hot!

Hit 'CTRL F' then type in female. Zippy is one of a select few....and she's hot! Aaaaaah! Widipedia does in deed list poor Zippy as a female! How embarrassing! Oh, well, that's a perfect example of the misinformation one can expect from Wikipedia! As well put in American Dad...Stan: "If only there was a place that you could make any outrageous claim you want with absolutely no proof, and millions of people would accept it as fact."Steve: "That's it! Wikipedia!"Or, as The Office makes perfectly clear, only Michael Scott considers Wikipedia to be a reliable source of information! Here's yet another piece from a more reliable source... The University of Akron! Zippy's no shemale!!! Back up off the poor guy, you pervs! Zippy don't swing that way! Now, the Golden flush on the other hand... zippyrifle32
sorry blue and gold, while the people inside zippy may be male, the mascot itself is female. Wikipedia is right, and the student made videos on youtube are actually wrong. also, anatomy beats fashion when deciding on sex. thus the boys wear beanies not girls argument is not very valid. It's a bit of a shame when the fan base doesn't even know the basic history and information regarding their mascot. that there is any confusion is embarrassing. zippyrifle32
also... quit acting like being female is a bad thing!
Blue & Gold
also... quit acting like being female is a bad thing! Heeeey now, easy cowperson. I never said nor implied that in any way, shape or form. So don't accuse me of that. Thank you. Also, look above, I never said beanies were for boys.Additionally, as far as knowing our mascot, I'm fairly certain that generally a female cheerleader is inside Zippy - an easier lift for the other cheerleaders. Finally, I can't believe it was actually said that the Wikipedia information trumps UA's! Don't ever try telling a professor that one for any research writing assignment! Here you go, even more evidence. How much do we need? I'm sorry the truth seems to be so disappointing to some on the board. But don't kill the messenger! (And don't unfairly accuse the messenger of sexism either ) Go Zips!
zippyrifle32
all of the people in costume i have met have been guys, but i'm sure there have been/are girls that play the part. those youtube videos are student made, and sadly they didn't get their facts right. here's a short list of links that mention zippy's femininity.http://www.ohiooacc.com/mascots.htmlhttp://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/18/http://www.wbnx.com/akronu/http://www.ohio.com/sports/12535991.htmlhttp://wp2.medina-gazette.com/2008/01/01/http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php/Akron_Zipshttp://www.answers.com/topic/university-of-akronhttp://www.fantasybetszone.com/assets/college_mascots.pdfincluding this one from the buchtelite! ZippyRulz
The beanie, the rugby shirt, the high-tops, no skirt, no makeup or jewelry...Zippy is quite the tomboy. I've seen her open a can of whoop-ass on the Y-town Penguin, too. Transgendered maybe? (but the pouch was too useful to give up?) Even the name is not definitive. The debate rages on...
