ZachTheZip
It's the penultimate game at the Rubber Bowl. The entire season hangs on the line.On top of it all, we get an interesting rumor to spice things up: Tom Amstutz to step downWhat kind of psychological impact will that have on his team? Could this be to Akron's advantage?
johnnyzip84
It's been widely reported and discussed as to just how much the University and the City mean to "Toledo Tom". Therefore if there ever was a "lame duck" coach who might inspire his team in a situation like this (on his way out), it could very easily be Amstutz. I think this will give UT a boost, making a fairly talented team even more dangerous. Once again, it's up to JD and staff to get the Zips ready to match the emotion and intensity on Wednesday. And I don't mean Zach Anderson simulating WWE after the whistle, either The Zips will need to play smart, focused, inspired, and intense football on Wednesday night to come out on top. skip-zip
After a 2-1/2 week layoff, this game could go two ways....1) The rest did us some good.2) We'll have execution problems after a long period of not having real game situations.Again, anything can happen in the MAC, but I am just happy right now that we find ourselves in a position to possibly win this division after being picked to finish last. I just hope we take care of these two homes games, and go from there. Let's just hope Toledo doesn't have another effort like they had against Michigan left in them this year. johnnyzip84
Looks like the Zips are opening as 4 1/2 to 5 point favorites.LinkOne last thing about Amstutz resigning at the end of this year. I really wonder how much of this decision has to do with the gambling investigations, and other off-the-field issues. Sure he will have had three straight losing seasons, but look what he did just prior to that and look at his overall record. If this (other factors being considered) is not the case, then JD better hope the UA administration is a little kinder than UT's, just in case HE ends up with three losing seasons in a row (I don't think JD will, BUT if the Zips lose Wednesday, it becomes a real possibility). GP1
One last thing about Amstutz resigning at the end of this year. I really wonder how much of this decision has to do with the gambling investigations, and other off-the-field issues.I would bet the gambling issue had a ton to do with Toledo Tom's repositioning at UT (two puns in one sentence not intended). It is one thing to have some NCAA violations impact your program like has happened to Marshall, but to have your players associate with known organized crime members from Detroit is a devastating blow to a program. In fact, this is the type of thing that should get an AD fired in addition to the football coach because gambling goes straight to the public trust and integrity of the game. In the end, people do not want to pay to go see a game they think may be fixed. I actually think this will help the Zips. While I was on the fence about the outcome, I see the Zips winning. Distractions are a big problem for college age players. It is hard to keep a team close when they have friends going to jail, inconsistent play and a coach going to work in the Alumni office. That's a lot of negative stuff day in and day out. Many of these kids may be looking forward to the end of the year.

johnnyzip84
Here's the Toledo Blade story on Amstutz's resignation. As pointed out in the article, the timing is kind of strange, since UT has been off for 10 days now themselves.Toledo Blade Story
