Big Zip
Has anyone looked at the Rubber Bowl records on GoZips? The story on the front page talking up the last game in the Rubber Bowl. They list a game in 1968 as the most points scored beating BW 59-19 (most in the modern era). BUT I was at a game on 11-24-2001 where we beat EMU 65-62. I find things like this fascinating -- either they failed to qualify the game as non-OT or simply got it wrong. It never ceases to amaze me when items are wrong on our own web site. Doesn't Akron have a media guide to check these facts on? Maybe it was the highest scoring non-Div 1 game at the Rubber Bowl or perhaps (although I don't recall) we changd the stadium name to the Polymer Bowl that year. I hate to be nit picky, but I think this is the kind of stuff that permeates throughout the athletic program. Freaking amazing!

I don't think we can excuse the web site due to this particular game going into OT either, because just a few years later (see link) the Zips beat up on Howard (not Hampton lol), once again scoring 65 points in a game that not only avoided overtime, but you might say it went into "undertime". If I recall correctly, in the 2nd half a running clock was used per an agreement from both benches.Link
Big Zip
I completely forgot about the Howard game -- wasn't that supposed to be the beginning of annual games against HBCU schools with money going to diversity scholarships? Whatever happened to that?
Captain Kangaroo
I completely forgot about the Howard game -- wasn't that supposed to be the beginning of annual games against HBCU schools with money going to diversity scholarships? Whatever happened to that?Thank God the concept was killed. I felt so bad for those Howard kids...they had no business being on a D1-A field. Yeah, their band was great and the majorettes were cute. If I want to see Howard's majorettes or band I'll make my own road trip. That game was as brutal a beatdown as I've ever witnessed. My college intramural team would have put up a more respectable effort...against Auburn!Anyone remember, after Sekai Greer (or was it Ty Washington) fumbled inside the 10 yard line trying to punch in that final, 9th TD? We recovered...Owens then pulled Hendry (starter) off the bench to seal the deal. Owens just LOVED to pound 1-AA schools. One of MY fondest Rubber Bowl memories was Owens pulling the on-side kick against Liberty when we were up 41-14.Pound those Baptists, Lee!!
