Z.I.P.
Top Drawer Soccer shows that 2010 college soccer recruiting is under way, and already Coach Porter has a verbal commitment from the captain of the US National Under-17 team, 5-11, 150 lb fullback Perry Kitchen of Indianapolis and the top-rated Chicago Magic FC. Perry has been a member of the US National U-15 and U-17 teams. I think the U-17s are currently in Spain (OK, correct me if I have the wrong country) in training. NOBODY in college soccer will have the back line that Akron puts on the field in the future. As for the Class of 2009? Holy Cow! At this time, no one with the possible exception of UCLA is even in Akron's field of view. The ACC schools so far have small classes showing. Akron has gotten commitments from four of the top twenty-five players on Top Drawer Soccer's Top-100 list, including #9 Scott Caldwell of Braintree, Mass. another US U-17 player, along with Chad Barson of Dayton and Ohio Premier who is ranked #10, and CVCA student and ex-#1 recruit Ben Speas, who fell on the list after his injury took away his senior season of HS soccer. Also, Eric Stevenson of Columbus is ranked #25. He of course also has US international playing experience, as does Zarek Valentin who has been playing for both the U-17 and U-20 USA teams. And to top it off, we have incoming GK David Meves, who is ranked #55 nationally.Coach Caleb Porter is winning the game of Can You Top This. Are you kidding me what the hell is the University waiting for to get this guy a new stadium. I stadium worthy of his place....on top of that what is Mack Rhodes doing to get the Zips into a real soccer conference. C'mon enquiring minds want to know -- especially before we lose Caleb. If we have any extra money, I would tuck it in Caleb's pocket rather than build a stadium...at least until the economy turns around.
Zip Watcher
If Civil Engineering can have a Concrete Canoe competition, can't they have a "Groundwater Drainage Improvement Contest" among the Juniors & Seniors? I'll sponsor a backhoe for the event. Give 'em 3 credits to improve the drainage on a random flat portion of grass on campus.I have just the pitch in mind ..
