I'm planning on going, and trying to figure out when I need to arrive. Does anyone know if there's a set NCAA formula to figure out whether the Zips game will be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in Portland? If it's one of the last two games I can get there in time on game day. If we play the first or second game, I'll have to fly in a day early. So the sooner I can figure which game we play, the sooner I can book an airline ticket.

Vs Gonzaga. Is it winnable?
To answer the question, yes it is winnable. On any given day, the Zips can beat any team in the tournament.I'm not so concerned about the Zips traveling west. I'm concerned that Gonzaga can take a bus from their campus to Portland.I like that the game is on Thursday and not Friday. I'm a big believer in momentum and the Zips have it right now. Hell, I'd like the game to be sooner than Thursday so we don't lose any momentum. I don't like that I heard a guy on ESPN radio say just last week that this is the best Gonzaga team ever.I like that I believe we have the best Zips team ever. This game is going to be a good test for the program. By the end of this game, we will know whether we are ever capable of being the Gonzaga of the east, or if we are just the best team in a bad conference. Either way it turns out, it will be a good dose of reality. I really don't mind being the best team in a bad conference. Let's just be UofA. Last night was a lot of fun and we need more of it in lieu of the pushing boulders up hill like we have been for decades.

One very serious thing I hope the Zips coaching staff take into account is the change in elevation out west. This has been a big complaint from a lot of east coast teams that end up getting stuck out west. The change in elevation has very serious effects on a team. The oxygen level is different, and a number of other small things are off enough to throw performance of a player. Add in to the equation that this is going to be a home game for the Zags and the odds start looming over the Zips. With it being spring break, I serious hope the Athletic Dept has the money to send the Zips out ASAP. The sooner they can get adjusted to the environment, the less outside factors will affect the game.

Portland is almost sea level. They will actually have more oxygen there than in Akron.

Portland elevationAkron is actually a fair bit higher in elevation than Portland. Time change and travel are the only two things you'll have to worry about, locationwise.

You might want to put in a bid on Priceline.com. You would have to plan on leaving Wednesday since you can't choose the flight time and they may give you a late-arriving flight but you might save a lot over published fares, given the short notice for travel planning.I don't know if there's any chance UA would charter a plane for fans? I'm sure other schools have done it for the tourney (?)

Dave,You got any idea how to get there for less than 800?ZW
I know you won't like this answer but AMTRAK can get you out and back for $193 (before taxes I think) each way. 45 HOURS to do it each way so you'd probably have to be on the 3:45AM train that leaves in about 8 hours. Haven't checked Greyhound :D .

I'm fortunate to have rung up enough frequent flyer miles to cover the trip, so I don't have to pay the high fares. What I saw in my brief search through available flights is that there are no bargains for Portland, but there are some to Seattle. Hilltopper and I have decided to drive to Detroit (3 hours) and catch a direct flight to Seattle. It's less than a 3-hour drive from Seattle to Portland. The best prices I saw were Columbus to Seattle. It includes a couple of connections, but prices out around $400.

Okay guys! Found me a spare computer finally! I am a Portland State University alum and know the town well. There are a lot of cheap motel rooms in Portland, on the East side of the river. But when I visit, I stay at the Days Inn downtown in Center City. It runs now I suspect (last time in town was three yrs ago) at close to $100/nite. You may be able to bargain with them.Unfortunately, not a lot of dining opportunities, unless things have changed, near the Garden/Coliseum complex. I'd plan on going downtown -- its only 5-10 minutes across the bridge, but parking downtown can cost an arm and a leg. I'm not sure if I can make it myself, work schedule being full. Go Zips! Its nice to see Akron is not just a soccer school anymore. :D

Spokane is more than 350 miles from Portland. Spokane is located in the Eastern Mountains of the State of Washington and most of the trip from Spokane to Portland will not be on a major highway. They may have a far shorter distance. But, the trip is not a piece of cake.
