They ranked us one spot ahead of Purdue (they were #94 and had a 46 position drop from last year). i don't agree with that but they always have a "teaser" at the bootm of the page to give you a clue who the next team is. The teaser at the bootm of the Purdue story for Akron was Who is No. 93?: Our next school was ranked by the Princeton Review as the No. 1 best value among American private colleges.I'm thinking there may have been a mistake. :)

His previews got scrambled. Yesterday it read "This school's hometown hosts the world championships for the All American Soap Box Derby" or something close to that.

Wow. I'm amazed to see that someone outside of Akron is actually paying attention to what happens here. I thought that was an excellent and well-informed analysis. Most of the stuff you get from the pre-season rags is made up out of whole cloth. But this was spot on.Reading that article just reinforced how big a factor the addition of Chris Henderson and Phil Tonga (and yeah, Bain!) could be to a DL that needs to step up big this year.I keep avoiding the issue in my mind, but I also agree with the writers' prediction that another losing season means J.D. is gone. I think we're pretty good, though. In fact, I think we could have a breakout year.Hope springs eternal.GO ZIPS!

I really, really hope that JD can come through this year. I don't want him to leave. We need some consistency at the top. JD is only in his 6th year as a head coach, and already he's the longest-employed coach in the MAC. Turnover amongst head coaches in smaller conferences is a real problem. I want a coach to leave here because he's done a good enough job to be noticed by a top school, not because he couldn't get a winning season.

Amen. But bottom line, he's gotta win.

Such is the life of a MAC Coach. He wins, he leaves. He loses, we boot him out. Now, what I'm excited about is the coaching staff behind him. Those guys are lining up to be HC IMO. They wouldn't be doing that if they didn't think Akron had what it took to win with the new stadium bringing in recruits.

Maybe that's the case with Montgomery and Okruch. I still believe that Harris came here mostly because of his connection with Brookhart. You just don't go directly from QB coach to the head coach.

Whoever the coach is in 2010 will have a great stadium to work with and the program will move up. That's how I'm thinking about it. It would be a tough break for JD to get one year in the new stadium and then be out but that's the way it goes. On the other hand, if he survives and the stadium helps with recruiting the way I think it will, he could be very successful here for a long time to come.

Zipsrifle...I'd say you're almost right. In the MAC, a coach wins and he moves on, or he loses and he may or may not be gone, depending on the circumstances of his contract, and how much more money they'd owe him, and how much the school is willing to eat. I love athletic defenses, but I must admit that our small linebackers are a concern to me as well.I usually don't care much for prognosticators, especially in the MAC where any number of teams can rise to the top on any given year. But I at least appreciate that they learned some things about the team when doing their analysis.

Haven't the Zips had the "longest tenured coach in the MAC" before .. in both mbb and fb?

Also in the Quad Countdown at #69 - Wake Forest - is this missive -Nickname: Demon Deacons. Say what you will about Blue Devils, but Demon Deacons has to be the scariest nickname in the F.B.S. Also frightening? Aztecs, Fighting Irish, Golden Hurricane, Horned Frogs, Razorbacks and Vandals. Least intimidating? Zips, Volunteers, Terrapins, Hokies, Ducks and Beavers. Most delicious? Boilermakers. At least we have some good company. Fear the Roo!

They're not Div-1, but I was always a little intimidated by the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan.

Ouch, just reading that made me tremble. I sure don't want to be around when the Battling Bishops take on the Quakers.

With the Bishops battling away in their pointy, mitre-shaped helmets, I'm afraid the Quakers would have little chance. As I understand it, Ohio Wesleyan invented "spearing," and that unassuming stadium in Delaware is grotesquely stained with the blood of countless victims.
