The beginning of the END?

Recommended Posts

It's the beginning of something much bigger. Zips basketball is at the point where it can stand on its own merits, not depending on the charity of a local superstar. It's a sign that Akron basketball is ready to take the next step.As far as the Lebron leaving Cleveland thing, the city needs him to leave more than he needs to leave the city. Clevelanders have never been able to appreciate what they have and instead focus constantly on what is outside their reach. Until they learn to do so, they don't deserve to win a sports championship or even have a nice city. The Browns should move to LA, the Indians to Columbus, and the Cavs can go to Buffalo or Pittsburgh. Those cities would appreciate them even if they aren't pulling in championships.

cleveland hater much? sheesh...i think the fact that this city hasnt seen a championship of any kind in the last 40 years is the real reason people seem to not appreciate the team.

This is a camp that is partially sponsored by Nike. So as much as it says "Lebron moved it to San Diego" it should say "Nike has received huge 'requests' to have Lebron camp in California." You'll notice it's San Diego, and not LA, Oakland or Sacramento.

I'm from Akron. What has Cleveland ever done for me? Nothing in my lifetime. I think the city needs to start over from scratch and find a new identity. Remove the source of all the superficial misery: the sports teams. Then they can focus on making the actual city better until it's worthy of having professional sports teams again.

Amen, my Akron-area brother! Do not be deceived and make no mistake, Cleveland would, without hesitation, squash Akron like a bug if they could. Cleveland's professional sports teams don't want to see ANY Zips fans. Neither does Columbus. Go Akron! Go UA! Go Zips!

Sure. Why would we want or need that? Our only real connection to free publicity on a national level.

I can't see how anyone can argue that this is a good sign for the Zips. Contrary to some of the delusional beliefs on here, Zips Hoops can't yet stand on their own. We've made one tourney appearance in this new era. ONE. And we got knocked out in the first round. Granted in a relatively competitive game, but knocked out none the less. Now I know we've got Zeke coming in, and there is a lot of optimism for this program right now, but now is not the time that we can safely wave goodbye to the LeBron connection. There is still a long way to go before Zips Hoops can "stand on their own." When we are getting 4 and 5 star recruits into the program on thier own, winning the MACC every year and making deep tournament runs then we can talk about whether or not we still "need" LeBron. Even then, it can't hurt to have him around. Make no mistake about it, this is most definitley NOT a positive thing for the Zips. The sky isn't falling, but there are a few clouds in it now.

Was that a serious comment? A professional sports team doesn't care about which college team fans root for.I applaud those trying to spin this into a positive, but it is anything but a positive thing. I'm not sure how much it will negatively effect the Zips, but it won't be having a positive effect.

Was this a serious quote? Absolutely yes. Don't think for a split second that ANY professional sports organization is not KEENLY interested in where a potential fan base chooses to spend their limited entertainment $$$.
