http://www.footballfanatics.com/COLLEGE_Akron_ZipsA few new items, especially new Adidas tees and sweatshirts
Still waiting on those Zips replica football jersey's that cannot be found anywhere?I even emailed the marketing guy and he has not responded.
UA athletics has been so abysmally bush-league for so long I, tragically, am often quite accustomed to it. But The University of Akron simply cannot afford a shabbily run athletics department anylonger - this year, with the opening of the Info, is a watershed year. Replica jerseys - be they football, basketball or baseball - are taken-for-granted staple offerings of any college or professional sports team shop. Any, that is, but UofA.

Totally agree. I went to the Akron @ Purdue game a few years ago and they had several Purdue, home/away replicas for sale and very affordable. No excuses...we are under 2 months away from opening a new stadium and I cannot buy a replica jersey??ridiculous.

Yes, availability of Akron products is horrible. I was visiting Michigan Tech (in Houghton, way up in the U.P.) about 4 years ago. They are a D-II school (except for Hockey). I walked into their team shop and it completely put Akron's to shame in a Big, Big way. There is no excuse why UofA can't put more merchandise out there for fans, they apparently just don't make the effort. I agree, this needs to change. When I walk into the new team shop, I expect to be able to get my hands on ANY of the Akron merchandise they have online anywhere, not just on the UA online store.

Walmart in Stow has better Akron gear than the university. I went to school there for 3 years and couldn't find anything to buy that didn't look like some 1980's unlicensed piece of crap. I support the school every chance I get. Being able to wear a decent Zips polo or t-shirt would be nice.

I didn't realize that the student union bookstore selection was really that bad. Whenever I take someone to campus, that's one of the 'wow' factors. If your talking about overall distribution of apparel, that's one thing, but I think our bookstore is more than sufficient.

suffecient? yes... butgood enough? no.With the new stadium, we're going to have a huge increase in the desire to get zips apparel... we need a facility that will be able to handle such needs and the bookstore is not where we want people to go just to get a tshirt. Any ordinary fan doesn't want to have to walk a quarter mile to bookstore just to get some akron gear... they want it to be at the stadium where they can get it at their leisure. Keep in mind the bookstore is just that... a bookstore. Its not designed to be a team shop like the one in the stadium will be. The selection is good, but it wont be half as good to the stadiums team shop... at least i hope :-\Not to mention the bookstore's fettish with overpricing every single item in the store... thats an ENTIRELY different topic

True. The need for a sports apparel shop in the stadium is evident. I think you guys are worrying over nothing though. I'd be very surprised if the university didn't go above and beyond expectations on the stadium team shop. That's a HUGE opportunity to make a lot of money.

I'd be surprised if that were to change with a new team shop. You said it yourself, there will be an increase in demand for zips products. You know what that does to price...

Got this blanket as a gift from the in-laws today. They took the picture from the Christmas card we sent them and the Walmart in Massillon had this nice Zips template blanket for the photo to go in. It isn't a heavy duty blanket, but I think it looks really nice (especially the two people in the picture).

I wouldn't be suprised if they dropped the ball, but I hope they don't. Does anyone know if the team shop will be done by Sept 12th??

Marketing missed a golden opportunity to promote Infocision the last 2 weeks in downtown Akron. Last weekend was the Italian Festival, which drew in excess of 50,00 people over the weekend, and the Hamburger Festival just concluded, which attracted roughly 20,000 people. At the Italian Festival, there was a gozips.com tent but no one manning the table with any literature or other information. This weekend there was no one in sight to promote anything. Obviously, marketing must feel they can get more bang for their buck, by using billboards rather than a good old-fashioned one on one conversation/sales pitch.

Our marketing efforts are tragically piss poor. There is absolutely NO way Hunter is getting the head AD job. You are absolutely right that UA should have had a stronger presence @ these downtown events. I just wish the UA athletics department was as enthusiastic about Zips athletics as we are.

The sad part is if they would use ZipsNation by keeping us informed and making us feel needed, they could have asked for volunteers to help pass out information about season tickets, purchasing bricks, moving Akron gear and the like. I would have given them some time over the weekend to do just that. I've heard some members of the Athletics dept. read the forum. They are missing so many opportunities to keep us informed and active. I think some will be very upset when they finally get around to giving us a tailgating update. I doubt that anyone will be allowed to set up on any grassy area on campus. Those are manicured lawns, not cut down weed fields. The recently paved lot next to the computer center is also an unlikely candidate for tailgating. They will want to maximize car parking and not allow tailgaters to take two or three spots. My best guess would be the old ball fields across Exchange street off of Power? Also where the construction crews park there personal vehicles along Brown Street just south of campus.

The lack of marketing and promotion surrounding the first season at the new stadium is utterly beyond belief. I know the stadium is unfinished and UA still is despeartely pushing season ticket sales, but is there ANY other major college football program in the country that, less than 8 weeks from its home opener -- 54 days to be exact -- not only does not have single game tickets on sale, the tickets prices haven't even been announced?Someone needs to tell UA sports marketing that this is arguably the biggest event in the history of UA athletics, and it should have been treating it as such for the last year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but why wasn't there a co-promotion where Acme (like in the old Acme-Zip days) or Giant Eagle would be promoting the opener and selling general admission tickets in all their stores for several weeks prior to the game? Remember the "Fill the Bowl" campaigns? It's not rocket science. The entire city and area should be swept up in the excitement of the stadium's opening season.Does anyone know when tickets will go on sale? One would think that, given there will be a new game day staff in a new faciilty without any kind of prior event to get their feet way, UA would try to sell as many tickets in advance as possible. I can already see the lines of people waiting to buy tickets and finally getting in sometime in the middle of the second quarter. What a shame: Finally, a Division I facility, but a Division III sports marketing department.

I am with you! Why are single game tickets not on sale yet? Do the math, if they wait until 45 days prior to the opening game 30,000-4500 (season/obligated tickets)-5500 (students)=20,000 remaining tickets 20,000/45=444 tickets a day that would need to be sold in order to sell out the first game. Do they really expect to sell that many tickets for the first game much less the season with a marketing campaign they are using currently? Say they really concentrate on and sell 500 more season tickets prior to the start of the season. That would mean with the visiting school allotment and total season ticket sales about 19,500 tickets would still remain for each home game. 19,500*6=117,000 tickets. Those numbers might be high due to the standing room situation but that is the heart of the situation. Football games are going to be played regardless of the crowd that shows for the event. They should dedicate a huge portion of ticket sales this year to media buys and promotional appearances. It could only help in the long run. Not having single game tickets for sale and not having published ticket prices is unconscionable. It is pretty obvious what ticket prices are going to be:General: 15-$17.50Reserved: $20Priority: either $25 or 40 (depending on if they stick it to the season ticket holders like Toledo did and don’t prorate the z-fund donation for single game tickets)Family: probably $12.50-$15 per ticket but also depends on how they decide to sell them in either 4 packs like the season tickets or individual. I doubt they will be cheaper than general admission if sold individually for obvious reasons.Either way the majority of single game tickets will be general admission.

Or they will have ticket lines out the azz on opening day...people will stand in line forever because you know they will not be prepared or staffed to handle a huge walk-up crowd. This will also turn-off the consumer who does not want to wait in line for a ticket like they are riding a coaster at cedar point.I swear the only thing the U of A does efficiently is write parking tickets and drop your classes for non-payment.I thought for sure they would turn a corner and get organized with the new stadium but sadly it is the same old story.Speaking of staffing for the stadium...has anyone seen any ads(I personally have not seen squat) hiring for stadium help, concessions or anything? I am curious to see how they are going to run this massive operation?

Outside security will continue to be handled by Hall Security. Inside security, ushers, tiket takers, etc. are the same people that they have used at the Bowl & JAR.
