Tear down The Chapel, perfect location
I'm sure the chapel could get a premium price from the U. for their property and in this economy could buy some land cheap to build a new church to spec. It would be hard for them to beat their current central location w/easy rte. 8 access though. Which of course is why it would also be a good spot for an arena.I also like the south of exchange idea just because it would mean a couple blocks of slumlord housing would have to be cleared. That's the worst aspect of our campus, most vulnerable to crime, and biggest deterrent to potential students, IMO which is why I voted thusly. Logistics would be the same as with Info, for better or worse.I also don't have a problem with a downtown site since the U. needs to have symbiotic relationships with businesses, the city, and hospitality/entertainment zones anyway...not rigid separation.I would like the CH site to remain academic, preferably for a new library/archives/media center to replace Bierce one day.The JAR would still be useful for a lot of things like basketball/volleyball practice, team gathering space and locker rooms for events at the field house, existing classrooms & offices...

Good point about CH. Imagine if they built a new library there and tore down Bierce and turned it into green space? that would look really nice!

Although I agree wholeheartedly, it probably won't happen. They have plans to remodel the interior of Bierce, which I think is stupid. By the time CH is free game, couldn't we get the money for a new library? Bierce is eh..

I agree. We need a library that drops potential student's jaws. We need a library that architecturally rivals the downtown library! The main library should be one of the centerpieces of any campus.

Knock out the Plasma Center. Two birds with one stone...Oh wait, wasn't there where the Nemers bought new property facing Brown St on the block?
great location...unfortunately UA has promised Manny Nemer it wouldn't mess with his new location (eminent domain) for 14 years. Then again, that doesn't mean UA can't offer him a deal that's too sweet to refuse.

Central Hower is a no-brainer. In the heart of campus.
You're right. It is a no brainer. Plenty of room for a large multi-pupose arena for events from basketball to concerts. A college campus is a far superior place to have concerts than downtown. Now, if we can some how talk APS into giving it up as a swing school, so UA can have it now instead of nine years from now.

I personally feel that the University needs to develop more of the campus north of Buchtel Ave. We have a great gateway to the university via E Exchange street, but north of campus just seems like a dead zone. If we could SOMEHOW figure out a way to get APS to give up Central as a swing school, it'd be the best way for the University of begin the development north of campus. However, I don't see that happening... APS needs that school and theres just no way they're going to just give it up like that.

Put me down for the Memorial Hall site. Memorial is falling apart and needs to be torn down soon anyways. Plus the idea of driving down Exchange St., looking to my left and seeing a brand new state of the art arena, the jewel of MAC football Info. and the still beautiful and top of the line practice facility and rec center is enough to run chills down my spine.I'm also intrigued by the idea of the Plasma Center site. Getting rid of that embarrasment of urban decay would be enough of a pleasure but getting to stick it to the Nemers again in the process would just be icing on the cake. I can imagine the coronary Manny and Joe would have when the U comes calling to knock down whatever second rate, hole in the wall establishment they are planning to put up there.
I think Memorial Hall can play a role in this. Right now, Memeorial Hall is slated for demolition by UA so it can build a new College of Education Building on its footprint. It will have somewhat of a twin architecture with the east end of the student union that will face it. Plans are to make the Education Building's west side mimmic the slope appearnace of the student union's east side. Here are my thoughts regarding Memorial hall's role in a new on-campus arena: Postpone its demolition and the construction of the new education building. Put back the bleacher section that was once in its south end. Once a basketball season has ended, prepare Memorial Hall to be the temporary site for Zips basketball again come the following season. In the mean time, evacuate the JAR for some major rennovations. Start by blowing out the JAR's east wall and add to it sufficiently enough for a large (10,000 - 12,000) multi-purpose arena that can host everything from basketball games to major concerts. The UA campus was once a very successful site for some great rock and roll concert by major national and international acts. We used Belkin Productions ( today known as "Live Nation" which E.J. Thomas uses for small hall concerts like Lisa Lampanelli, etc). The JAR renovations would involve recentering the court so that it is exactly in the middle of an oval or rectangular seating area that totally surounds it. Get rid of the track on the second level. Create a true concert hall ceiling that in no way resembles a gymnasium ceiling. Get rid of all the JAR's bleachers. Use them in a bon fire for homecomming if you wish. Replace all bleachers with upholstered theater seats like the ones in UA's E.J. Thomas Hall. And, run those seats nearer to the JARS new ceiling. The seating area can take full advantage of the perameters of the building walls with lobbies running underneath the seating area (just like the grand tier and flying balcony seats do in Thomas Hall)The interior of the new arena will look just like a large theater in the round only with an adaptable basketball court in the middle. While this is going on, Memorial Hall would accomodate somewhere around 2,600 fans for hopefull only one basketball season. It's a temporary bullet worth biting for the sake of a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose and truly on-campus arena. Once the new arena is completed, it should be rededicated to its offical name: "The University of Akron Pavillion" Once the new arena is completed, tear down Memorial Hall and begin building the new education building.Another site is the area east of the stadium. I've measured the footprint and while its north and south parameters are as wide as, if not a little wider than the JAR's north and south side parameters. The footprint's east and west sides are much much longer than the east and west sides of the JAR's parameters. This will certainly place a multi-purpose arena clearly on the campus and it will have a handsome integrated look right next to an on-campus, muti-purpose stadium, a campus field house and student rec center, a campus Natatorium a smaller arena, an undisturbed "Greek Village" and multi-plex, state-of-the-art UA Student Housing facility. It will also be exposed to the region and not just downtown by being next to Rt 8 with entry and exit ramps practically in the arena's back yard and will still have a high profile to the greater Akron Community by facing East Exchange just like the stadium. Again, as with the rennovated JAR idea, seating (not bleachers) should take advantage of the full parameters of the building with lobbies running underneath.

Bierce is only 38 years old. And I agree that universities show their true worth by what they put into their libraries. It's a major selling point for student recrutment. You can always tell how serious a university is about its academics by how elaborate and user friendly their libraries are. But that's fodder for another thread, I guess. When Bierce was first built, it was intended to have a phase 2 which never came about.

doing a complete remodeling of the JAR to make it into a multi-purpose arena is too costly. Compare it to the Rubber Bowl, if you will. For the amount of money the University would pay just to revamp the JAR to make it more of big-time arena, they are better off spending some more money and building a completely new facility that is exactly what they want. Also, temporarily moving the Zips to Memorial is about the dumbest idea I have yet to read here. I know it would only be for 1 season, but when you have a top 50 player coming this fall and you are continually upgrading your status in the college basketball rankings, playing somewhere like that, for even 1 season, is like shooting yourself in the foot. Build a new arena, keep the JAR the way it is for practices and volleyball, and be done with it.I would much rather deal with the JAR for another 10 years than watch the university pour money into a poorly designed building and having to watch the Zips play in Memorial...

You completely lose me with this statement. Would you explain to ZN why this would be true?

Stick to answering the question asked. This thread isn't about attacking other ideas and calling them dumb. You are suppose to just simply state where you would like to see a new arena. And. you have no idea of how much the cost would be to redesign the JAR unless your name is Ted Curtis. Your comparing it to the Rubber Bowl is what gives your ignorance away and is truly the dumbest thing I ever heard.

No. I don't make it a habit to knowingly walk into a snare or an ambush. Guess you'll just have to stay lost.

So far we have 39 votes for on-campus and 10 votes for off-campus. I'd say downtown is in the minority easily.
The poll is for where people would like to see a proposed arena. The likely location would likely yield different results.
Agreed, and the on-campus sites are disected into several. Like I said, 39 on campus and 10 off-campus. It's glaring.

Ok, I'll bite. There is no reason to believe that an campus arena would yield a better concert than any other location in a city. If the programming is good, it would follow that the concert would be good. Possible exceptions are paper plant, rendering plant, sewage plant etc. etc. ps. No trap, I just don't understand how your statement can be supported.

And, I can see right through your tired and usual, "yes but" game. That's why I won't bite. The more I explain, the more you'll nit pick. Try being a tad more proactive and less reactive.

I'll do it for you UADavid. Because good recruits would come to a game at Memorial Hall, laugh, and never come back. No great teams will schedule us and play in that dump. Every game will sell out, which won't be good with less than 3000 seats. I'd rather wait nine years instead of rushing into spur of the moment renovations. You can keep putting a band aid on it or just fix it right the first time. I'm suprised someone as smart as you think you are needed that explained...

thank you.... I was somewhat shocked someone would actually want me to explain that one. Its fairly simple... good facilities = good recruits as evidenced by our recent improvement in recruit quality. Yes, coaching plays a part, but if you have the best coach in the world playing at the world's biggest dump, recruits are not going to want to play there.Jake, im sorry, but you need to stop trolling this thread for every possible way to call someone out on their opinion. I wasn't calling YOU stupid, I was calling the IDEA stupid... No, I don't know EXACTLY how much it'd cost to revamp the JAR, but I can tell you without a doubt that it would be a smarter investment to built a new arena elsewhere for some more money than itd cost to remodel the JAR. Case and point: Rubber Bowl and Infocision Stadium... can't say its not the same because, frankly, it is. The JAR may not be as old as the Rubber Bowl, but the quality of the facility versus the quality expected by fans and top-level recruits is the same between the two venues. We need a better arena that will help attract even better recruits and help bring in more fans. ON TOPIC...I have full faith in the administrators at UA to find the best possible location for any kind of multi-purpose facility that may be built in conjunction with the city. They've done us right with Infocision Stadium, and I completely expect them to be able to do the same with a new arena.

As do I. They know how to build an on-campus stadium w/o the city being involved and I trust they can do the same with an on-campus arena. Other than that your opinion like mine is just that. To call someone's opinion the dumbest thing you ever heard is an insult and you meant it to be one. So again, stop your disengenuous arguments. Memorial Hall as a temporary site will not discourage good team players. They will know it is temporary and they will know what positive results will come from it whether it is a major renovation of the JAR which BTW is not a band aide approach or whether it is the total demolition of the JAR and the creation of a new one on the JAR's footprint. Your nasty little dishonest agenda keeps showing it ugly little pischer of a head.At best you are an armchair navel gazer who has no idea of what he is talking about. Try some humility to replace your arrogance. Then, perhaps you can stop being the troll who continues to call me out on my opinion. Just look at your past posts and you will see that you are guilty of that which you accuse me.This whole thread started out as a fun brain storming session until you turned it into the typical diatribe that you did to Ohio.com...nasty little beeeeotch!
