ZachTheZip
Top Drawer Soccer ranks Akron #1 in the preseason poll. This is a monumental first for the program and for UA athletics as a whole. The schedule is perfect, playing 8 ranked teams. If this team is as good as I think they will be, I would love to what the NCAA will try to come up with as an excuse to screw us over in the playoffs this year. Low seed? No homefield? Put us up against the toughest path to the championship? I say "Bring it on".

Because, if you recall, we were the #1 team in the country towards the tail end of the 2005 season. I have to admit, after almost 30 years of following and supporting Zips athletics, I have probably never been all that excited about the start of a soccer season....until now. MDZip
I've been excited about Zips soccer for a number of years. Even though I will probably only get to see one game this year (Indiana on the Friday night before the football), I ordered season tickets (at $50 that's a great bargain) just to help support the program a little more. Any time you have that level of talent and commitment on any level (and soccer may not be the marquee sport in college but its still well ahead of most other sports - and I would argue trailing only football and men's basketball on the UA campus) you want to help show support for the incredible job they're doing. If you can't do it by attendance, buy a season ticket (they're cheap and you get a scarf ).

And although it's obviously more important to be #1 at the end of the season, this is clearly an indication to me that the base of folks who recognize us as one of the top programs in the country is growing. You could never achieve a #1 ranking in a preseason poll without a high level of respect from a lot of people.

Z.I.P.
We're #4 in the National Collegiate Soccer Coaches Association PollAnd College Soccer News has us at #6The coaches poll is the one that everyone looks at -- along with the SoccerAmerica poll. I expect scoring to come early and often, but not from just one or two players. Set pieces should be really fun this season, given how good our fullbacks are. We should initiate a new trophy for the highest scoring defender.
