Class of 82
http://www.cleveland.com/collegesports/pla....xml&coll=2He's confident, but I'm not. He looked great with the exception of three games, but those three games he was horrible. Until I see that he won't have lapses like that, I can't be confident in him.The only question in confidence that I'm feeling revolves around the defense. Can they finally step up and be a consistent force? CJ and the O put up 30 a game last year, and Akron still went 5-7.So maybe I'm in the minority, but I expect CJacq and the offense to have a fine season. He has more than enough talent, and he has the weapons around him to help Akron score on virtually everyone on the schedule.I like that he's confident, and think he has pretty solid reason to be. Dr Z
So maybe I'm in the minority, but I expect CJacq and the offense to have a fine season. I'm on your side, I want to see him get more help on the other side of the ball, to me this an easier fix than expecting him to play like Joe Montana. Granted we were like top five in fumbles recovered last year but we still need to have a defense that doesn't say "Well we have the lead at the end of the third, our job is done." Football is a team sport...unless we lose, then blame the QB
xu9697
I'm predicting 27 TDs and 11 INTs for Jacq along with 3,200 yds and a 58% completion %. I think this type of production will lead us to 8 to 9 wins.
ZachTheZip
Last year, if we had the offense that you guys are confident that we'll have this year, we would have likely had at least 9 wins and maybe more. Imagine not blowing the Temple, Bowling Green, and Ball State games and beating Cinci, Buffalo, and Ohio. Finishing off the Rubber Bowl era with the best season in history. But we didn't because of game-killing turnovers and epic collapses. We need to average at least 35 points on offense because we don't know how the defense will be. Can Jacq cut down on the fumbles and INTs that allow a team to gain the momentum to come from behind in the 4th and beat us (Cinci, Bowling Green, Buffalo)? Can he not go on INT sprees that keep us from ever having a chance (Temple, Ball State)? His job is to keep our defense off the field, not to put them out there with a short field to work with. I hope you guys are right. I hope Jacq and everybody else on the offense is supremely confident and is aiming to blow opponents away. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
It doesn't matter how good Jacq plays, nor the offense, if the defense can't play more stoutly than last year. The problem last year was rarely points scored. Who here would argue that the offense was anemic last year? I remember the sinking feeling that no lead was safe, no number of points enough, and that sinking feeling was caused by the defense. If the D is much improved this year, and they had better be, this should really be a Zips season to remember.Go Jacq! Go O! Go D! Go Zips!STZ
g-mann17
... We need to average at least 35 points on offense because we don't know how the defense will be.That speaks volumes to what my point has been. (defense needs more improvement than Jacq but both need to perform better) No offense or QB should be held to "we have to score 35 points a game". It's an unrealistic expectation. We're not going to start beating this dead horse again. All of it was last year, the coaches and receivers have confidence in Jacq, they have a few wrinkles that will have Rodgers on the field here and there, as long as the defense has improved there is no reason we shouldn't be highly competitive this year. tim123
From what I've seen from Jac and Rodgers in both scrimmages they both need to step it up. Nicely looks better than both, I still can't believe he picked Akron over all the other school's recruiting him.

Nicely looks better than both, I still can't believe he picked Akron over all the other school's recruiting him.If Nicely can remain patient and work hard in the off-season, he will no doubt be competing for a starting position by next year. He's just not ready for D-1A competition quite yet.Unless other teams that I'm not aware of have offered him, I'd say Akron was his best option. OU, Toledo, or BG? One's in a hicktown with record levels of meth abuse among the locals, one has quite possibly the lamest excuse for a mascot(alteast zippy doesn't try to intimidate...and fail horribly), and the last is a couple years from most likely playing Youngstown State in FCS. I'd say Akron, hands down, was the right selection.
Blue & Gold
I walked past Patrick Nicely @ the Info openhouse. He's huge. He definitely passes the eyeball test. He really looks like an NFL QB (not saying he is, of course; just saying height & build.) He's got a good swagger (Old Spice?) about him too, which you really want in a QB. johnnyzip84
baller4life, your name even suggests that you are in this for the "long haul". Thus I urge you have a little patience with how Patrick is being handled. Let's assume he is the most talented QB on the roster. Even if he is, true FR QB's are generally not expected to replace a returning SR who has started for 1 1/2 years and steadily improved his production. If Jacq stumbles badly out of the gate, then maybe I'm willing to listen. But even in that scenario, I'd still like to see what Rodgers can do 1st. There are a lot of long term benefits to being able to keep Patrick redshirted this year.

psc2009
As long as Jacquemain can complete 55-60 percent of his passes (he was at 56% last year), then the offense will be fine. The defense just can't keep giving up 30 + points this year. That's what ended last season.

We suffered with Morelli for a couple years, when clearly Clark was a superior talent.Of course, the fans' favorite player is always the back-up QB. The starter is never good enough. We had fans saying Devlin should start in place of Clark. I liked Devlin -- the kid had amazing accuracy and touch on the ball -- but Clark was ahead of Pat. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Dude, that kind of underdog self-loathing is no longer accepted on the nation. This program is in transition, and we should not ever allow each other to cry poor, or to denigrate Akron's ability to recruit players, keep them in house, and compete, with anyone. It's time to dispense with the NEOHio loserism once and for all here. Nicely chose Akron, and he chose well. It's a program on the rise, with first class facilities, in a tradition-rich area. In the media-saturated world of 2009 and going forward, if you cannot perform and make noise from this platform, then the platform isn't the problem, you are. GO ZIPS!STZI totally agree that he's probably not ready, I'm just telling you what I witnessed.Sorry about the Akron comment but I heard he made a visit to Boston College. I love Akron,Go Zips!! ZippyTuba11
The biggest problem I have always had is Jac never looks for his second and third receivers. If his #1 is open, he'll make a good play. But it drove me up a wall last year to see countless plays where it was 3rd or 4th and long and Kennedy was -wide- open and easily had a first or a TD, but Jac never looked. He just gunned it into coverage and either got picked or effed up the play.If the coaches can get him to be aware of all his options, I think he'll have an incredible year. UA Fan
Coach Brookhart on the additions of Shane Montgomery and Walt Harris:I think it's been outstanding. The experience between those two is pretty overwhelming. The concern I had initially was the chemistry but it's been great. They are two very good professionals and what they bring is a wealth of experience and it's a huge value to our offense. Walt spent a lot of time with Chris Jacquemain and all our quarterbacks, helping fine-tune them. He really understands what it takes to bring success to that position and I think you'll see improved players.
