PSU_Lions_84
Guys, I know there were a few broken dreams and hopes left behind in Happy Valley, but I think you have reason for future optimism: Your defense played lights out in the second half, your passing game began to show, and so on. PLEASE, tho, tell your team/coaches not to run into the middle against a PSU defense. We have our pride, too, and run defense is a cornerstone. We face Temple in two weeks. I hope many of you tune in to support the Lions (as well as to scout the Owls), and will continue to support Penn State the remainder of the season. You guys have been enthusiastic, fun, and gracious; I appreciate the offer to check back in from time to time. Come basketball season, I add Duke to my list of teams -- I work here, so it is hard not to support them -- so will be watching your bball team as well. Good luck to a class group of fans, Zips!!(the other) 84P.S. Still interested in hearing how Zips fans were treated at the game, what they thought of the stadium atmosphere, etc.
Dr Z
Treated fine. PSU fans were lined up waving to the team buses going into the stadium and out of the stadium. Student section and participation was impressive. Nice stadium, didn't realize how old it was and how many updates it has. Walking around and seeing the old construction (bathrooms, concessions and locker rooms, video board), makes me realize how lucky Zip fans are to have the new gem of a stadium. I was VERY impressed with the field, grass looked almost fake it was so nice. I also noticed how PSU's warm ups were conducted, very professional. I think your run defense is OUTSTANDING, 71, 91 and 56 are just BEASTS. I'm VERY jealous to see DL play like that. If we had those three on our team and you didn't, that would make for an interesting game. I'll be interested to see their (DL) production in Big10 play. I don't think it will be slowed. Thanks for stopping back after the game.PS I would also like #10 on our team. He destroyed anybody he blocked yesterday, when he was in motion, it was obvious to me where Royster was running. Again, I think you guys will have a very successful season -- your D is battle-tested, and if it plays like it did in the second half, WHOO-HOO for the Roo! MDZip
Yep, as disapponted as I was in the first half effort, at least the Zips made some second half adjustments so it didn't get any uglier (and Penn State still did have a big chunk of their starters in), I have to give the Penn State fans credit. All of the ones around us were classy and even helpful at times. First time I've ever visited the Penn State campus and I was pretty impressed. We even stayed well after the game (even met the new wrestling coach, Cael Sanderson - one of the best wrestlers of all time - wish Akron would bring their program back) and by the time we left it was quite dark out. This was a minor problem since we had parked in one of those cow pastures a long way away from the field but it was quite fun flying up and down those hills at night in a friends's Chevy Suburban looking for our car. Yee-haaaa! Anyway, great experience and we had a lot of fun. I would prefer we schedule Penn State in their rare down years from here on out. psu1
MdZip: Oh god you mean by the hospital?!?! That is the worst place to park. I parked there once and it took me like an hour to walk there after the game from my tailgate and the traffic was terrible. I should have let you guys know where to park ahead of time, oh well. It's good to see Zips fans were treated well. I didn't see too many of them so I really couldn't tell if people were saying stuff to them or not. I think you guys really have a good team and you will kill Indiana next week. Good luck.
Lititzlion
I was going to start a thread but this seems like a good place to respond. You guys should NOT hang your heads. Do you think Oklahoma is going to pack it in for the season? Heck no; they think they can still make the BCS championship and they may. You guys have a lot of football to play and I suspect you will have a lot of cheering to do before the season's in the books.JoePa took his foot off the gas in the second half but he didn't take it all the way off. A lesser opponent would still have been steamrolled. Not Akron. Your team didn't give up and won the second half.Take away the last couple of minutes of the first half and we go into halftime up 17-0. You win the second half and the game's at 17-7. Yeah, it didn't happen that way but who knows?Your defense played well and with a ton of heart. We're proud of our running ability; in fact, some of our fans think we should be known as running back U instead of Linebacker U. We have a long string of very talented RB's as alums. Did you notice that you basically stuffed our running game? Take that and your second-half performance into the rest of the season and the Roos will be just fine.Glad to hear that your fans were treated well at PSU. One thing that always bugs me though is how a lot of our fans boo when the opposing team takes the field. Polite applause would be much classier. Akron's going to do well with the balance of the season and I'll be rooting for you. Hey, the better you guys do, the better it looks for us, right?Good luck the rest of the way! ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Man oh man, the Penn State posters who came here were so friendly and helpful that I can't help but think of the term "kill them with kindness". FWIW, I've long had the sports envy and hatred that is the norm for Ohioans who didn't attend OSWho, and the chatting with PSU fans here has only ramped-up those feelings. Here's hoping that PSU blows out the rest of the Big 10/11 and competes for the BCS trophy. If there's a way that path can encompass humiliation and pain for OSWho along the way, so much the better!Good luck the rest of the way, Nittany Lions. GO ZIPS!STZ
johnnyzip84
Hey "other 84" Even though the 1st half was pure misery, I must say that it's been a good experience to share perspective with you and the other Lions fans that have posted here. You guys seem like the types who I would really enjoy battling in a pickup game of just about anything and then shaking hands afterwards. You may recall that I grew up rooting for Pitt, so it's probably a little too much for me to pull a 180 and actually "root" for PSU. Besides, I've always been a fan of the underdog. I suppose that makes me a natural UA alum, fan, and supporter BUT, I will say this. Even when I was much younger and actively rooting against PSU, I ALWAYS respected the program that Coach Paterno ran. Nothing I've seen over the years or in the steps leading up to our game the past Saturday has changed that opinion. Best of luck in the Big 10. You can count on my support in ONE game for certain ;)BTW, we'll try to get Coach Porter to call off the dogs in the 2nd half on October
MDZip
BTW, we'll try to get Coach Porter to call off the dogs in the 2nd half on October 28 That's one of those "wish I had thought of that" moments. Outstanding. And psu1, yep, it was by the hospital. So while it might have been a mile and a half from the stadium at least it was a mere $20 to park. Please understand that our respect for the Zips is sincere. As Lititz noted, do well the rest of the year -- selfishly, it helps us, but you guys also deserve an outstanding season. And if I recall correctly, we played you tough last year in men's soccer: a 1-1 tie. Granted, we visit you'all this year, but I hope for a similar result.

I could get use to the tailgating though.. Hopefully you go on to win the national title,so we can say we got thumped by the best. Go Zips!! psu1
I don't think they do the cat sound a whole lot anymore. Or maybe it is just because I have had season tickets for years so I just don't even notice it anymore. But trust me it is not as bad as being at a Florida State game. They do the tomahawk chop and the Ohhhhhhh-oh-oh-oh-oh chant after EVERY play. Seriously watch the Miami-FSU game tonight and you'll see what I mean. Good Luck Akron. I was sort of hoping for a tie in the football game! :lol:Seriously, the Zips are even better in soccer this year than last year. They'll likely be ranked #1 in most polls here pretty soon. Now I'm not saying the soccer talent disparity is the inverse of what the PSU/UA talent disparity is in American Football. But I think it's fair to say that it would be an upset if PSU was to either win or tie come October 28.
PSU_Lions_84
I was sort of hoping for a tie in the football game! Your second half was great, Johnny -- kind of a moral tie, esp. after a demoralizing first half. The Zips didn't quit, that's for sure!
