The "I hate the spread offense" thread

I have hated our offense since the epic CJ vs. CJ quarterback battle that began in our shiny new fieldhouse. It's ugly and ineffective. Overutilized. Obviously not suited to our personel on the field. What I wouldn't give to, just once in a while, see TWO running backs in the backfield and a traditional, vanilla handoff.Pass to a tight end anyone?I am getting nostalgic for Marcel Weems and the Pass and Pitch offense at this point. At least that scheme had some imagination to it.AND IF I SEE ANOTHER HAND OFF TO JEREMY BRUCE I WILL GET VIOLENT. All right, I feel better already. Thanks Zipsnation for allowing me to rant...a few years ago I would've left this message on some poor athletic dept. guys voicemail. Carry on.

Anything would be better than this "punt" oriented offense we have now. What I hate most about the spread is how often the RB is expected to gain yardage from a dead stop.

I really wonder what effect removing JD would have. Our offense can't get a whole lot worse, and our defense plays well, with little or no thanks to him. I want a coach who will install a run oriented offense. If executed well, that could dominate the MAC (control the clock, cut down turnovers).

In theory, that type of running works if you have those types of RBs. Maybe if our RBs ran 4.3 forty yard dashes instead of 4.5-4.6 they would have some chance of creating plays.

I'm not saying go all out Flexbone, but I would love to see Akron incorporate some option plays.
We need a little more depth at QB before we start putting them in that situation...

Anyone remember when Charlie Frye was upset about the firing of Lee Owens he considered declaring for the NFL draft as a junior? It was Larry Fitzgerald who called Frye, telling him that he should stay, and that Charlie would quote "love J.D. Brookhardt's offense."From the day he became coach I expected the offense to look good, but for some reason all we get is inconsistency. And I'm not a reflexive "Blame the coach" hater at all....I just want to know why our offfense can't seem to string 2 good years in a row. Remember Getsy's awful 2006???? But I don't mean to go too far off topic, this thread is about hating Akron's spread offense.

Akron has a crappy Orange Marmalade JAM Offense= jam everything up the middle in hopes the Defense bites then pass outside towards the sidelines (for 4 yards). We need a Blackberry Spread Offense=using multiple sets and formations "spread out" the offense to incorporate all possible receiving targets (WR, TE AND RB).

May I ask why? We all know if/when Rodgers gets hurt, JD will reinstate Jaq for the next game.
Opinionated and uninformed is a dangerous combination.

I am not a fan of the spread, in general. My biggest issue with it, at least in regards to Akron, is it looks basically the same on every down. Ok, ok, ok...SOMETIMES we use 2 RBs. But it almost always goes up the middle or is fake and then pass. How about using some "max protect" at times and keeping those backs in there to block. How about incorporating a bit of option. Perhaps even a direct snap to an Allen or Bruce or even Bowser. Or, a little bit of moving the pocket/getting Rodgers out of the pocket. Finally, we need to be able to line-up in a "traditional" set in short yardage situations. Do we even have that package? IU uses the pistol, but not exclusively.

I don't want a run oriented offense. I don't want a pass oriented offense. I want a balanced offense. Those who want a two back offense, I agree. Especially in short yardage. If we ran the spread offense like other schools do, we would have two backs in the backfield. They are the RB and the QB. With Jacq in the game, there was never a threat of him running so it was a one back offense. Let's see if we have "two backs" this week. The next time we are in short yardage they need to have the QB under center and Tuzze blocking for Alex A. If Tuzze touches the ball once a game, that is one time too many. We don't have an offense that could make a fullback effective except as a blocker. Our inefficient running game is a product of our defense. I know that sounds strange, but the defense we run is soft. Our offense practices against our defense in the spring and two-a-days and it makes them soft as well. We are not a physical team (Akron has really never had a very physical team except for some of the Faust years when we ran a power offense). Our offensive line is not as physical as it should be making the rest of the offense soft. Offensive linemen taking penalties after the play is not physical, it is stupid. The cycle continues.

Forced 6 turnovers in 3 games (2 per game not an average), have allowed 119 rushing yards per game. They've played two Big 10 opponents. The defense is far from "soft".

We either have a high powered offense with a sieve like defense or the defense looks good and the offense is clueless. The one complaint I would have for the defense this year, which looks much better, is how much space the secondary gives all receivers. It's not a recent problem, but takes a lot of momentum from the defense.

Forced 4 turnovers in 2 games (still 2 per game average) 151.5 rushing yards per game. Average starting field position for opposing offense Opponents 46. Sorry, you're still...WRONG!

The defense had a rough start on the 1st drive of PSU, and the last drive of 1st half against IU. Other than that, they have oftentimes been put in a tough position (short fields, offense in short drive necessitating D logging many minutes, etc.). I have been happy with their production, save for needing to put more pressure on the QB.

You lie!So the rushing number went up from 115 per game to 151. You're right, we were knocking the blocks off of PSU and IU.
