Zips Time Whistle?

New gimmicks like this tend to be overused, and drive you nuts after about 5 minutes into game #1. I hope it is used judiciously. If handled right, I guess it could be fun.

Our athletics theme for 2005-06 is "It's Zips Time." One of the symbols of this message is a steam whistle, similar to those that sounded off around Akron back in early 1900s. When the workers heard that whistle blow, they knew it was time to buckle down, get to work, and show that great Akron spirit.

Throughout the coming sports season the sound of the steam whistle will resonate at different points during games, serving as a rally point for our student-athletes and coaches, and a hopefully a new tradition for Zips athletics.

My fear woulb be it's like the "broken glass" or "plop goes the ball in the water" sounds played at Canal Park. The first 3 times you heard them it was cute...after the 3rd inning...after you've heard them 1065 times...you're ready to kill someone.

Mark my words, this thing WILL GET OVERUSED! At the first game, nobody will know what the hell it is. IF people actually do respond to it, the guy holding the button will start pushing it like it was giving out free Coke or something. Then people will just get annoyed and ignore it.

I give them credit for trying stuff, but what are we supposed to do when the whistle sounds....Go Home? Oh, wait, it was "Time to get to work". OK, what do I work on? What am I supposed to do? I don't really think the guys on the field will get any more modivated by a whistle than by JD screaming at them.

There is nothing like having the entire crowd get fired up when the fight song, or something else starts playing. It's got to be interactive with the fans and the fans have to want to participate. I went to UofM games for years and having 100,000 people singing The Victors was AWESOME. We need to find a way to get the fans more involved, I don't have the slightest clue how to do this, but I think this is the key. I act like an idiot at the games anyway. I figure if I'm the yelling idiot, then other people will speak up, if just a little.

Maybe they are on to something. I've been wrong a million times before so all I'm asking is to let me know what I'm supposed to do when the whistle blows.

You know what I think UAM should do. Give out gold shirts at a few games as a promotion and sell gold shirts with UA logos at the book store, etc. If they could get people to start wearing the gold shirts at the games, it would get no only get rid of some of that God Forsaken OSU crap, but help the fans feel more apart of the team. When the players look up in the stands (assuming there are people there) they could easily see all the people backing them up.

What the heck, I'll give it a chance. At least they're trying to establish some tradition and atmosphere around Zips games and build much needed fan support. If it goes over well maybe it will be extended to other sports and fans will start bringing their own whistles. Can you imagine a full JAR with everybody blowing whistles? Anyway, it can't be as annoying as shooting off frickin cannons and if it doesn't work out then it just gets dropped. At least someone's using their noggin to come up with some new ideas.

Secondly,

I think this is going to get annoying, I would rather it played after every touchdown, but then again doesn't Purdue do the same thing? I think the whistle thing fits the Akron scheme of rubber plant work whistle. Who knows hopefully the powers that be are reading this message board and doesn't over do it!!

Anybody got a good copy of the fight song, Go Zips Go, etc. from the band? I'm starting to prep for 2005 Tailgating and the stuff I've got sucks. The stuff I've found on the internet sounds like a 12 year old put it together on their keyboard. It would be nice if the band put out something.

It will really get annoying to the other team when we are drubbing the rest of the league and keep blowing this whistle. I was about to shoot someone at Penn State with that freaking lion roar. Wonder if it will be a sexy whistle at the volleyball games?

When did they add the ending part? When Paul Winters made us learn it we didn't have that Ziips stuff at the end...man I should be ashamed an alumni football player didn't know the fight song had been updated since 96..

Ah ha! I was just getting ready to bring up the godawful Lions roar at Penn State. Talk about overused. The criteria seems to be any time PSU gains more than -10 yards on offense, or holds the opposing offense to less than 95 yards on a play.

I also thought, "Isn't this too much like Purdue?" when I first heard about it, but I guess this will be more "factory whistle" than "train whistle." And we don't have the world's largest drum. That can't really be the world's largest drum, can it? It's not THAT big.
