Update on Hoobler - not very rosy

Recommended Posts

From the Respository."Hoobler will have a full-ride scholarship waiting for him somewhere next fall, but he's not sure where it will be.Before the season Hoobler made a verbal commitment to attend Akron, but the future of the Zips' program is uncertain. The recruiting coordinator resigned amidst allegations of NCAA violations and the team has struggled to a 2-9 record in what could be coach J.D. Brookhart's last season there. Also, Hoobler, who owns a 3.4 GPA, was informed he can't play football and also major in pre-med at Akron. With that in mind, Hoobler said he plans to keep his options open by making official visits to Indiana University, Central Michigan and possibly other schools."I just want to find a college that I'll fit in at and be able to take the major I want," said Hoobler, whose brother, Chad, was a Carrollton product, and played for both Ohio State and Ashland in a career that wound up being hampered by knee trouble.Wherever Hoobler winds up, Davault is confident that school's getting a good one."I think he'll be real good," Davault said. "When Indiana had a guy here he was watching Chase walk down the hallway and said, 'That's an All-Big Ten linebacker right there.'""If he ends up at Akron, I don't think he'll red-shirt, he'll be right in the mix. If he ends up at a Big Ten school, the question will be what to do with him. He's got the size and length to be one of those defensive ends who stands up. I think he'll be a great player wherever he ends up."

So if he goes to IU or CMU he can major in pre-med and play football, but not at Akron? Does that mean our program is more difficult and therefore more risk of losing eligibility? Not sure I understand that one. I think he would need better than a 3.4 in college to get into med school, wouldn't he?

What did not come out in the newspaper article is the likelihood that he wanted to do the BS/MD (NEOUCOM) program which takes students to Akron, Youngstown and Can't for the first two years (in which they complete their undergrad work) and then onto the Rootstown medical school campus to complete their four years of medical school.A daughter of mine, was a NEOUCOM/Akron, student was clearly capable of playing and contributing to the the Lady Zips basketball program could not because of the strenuous load of doing four years in two years. There is no way that you can play basketball or another intercollegiate sports program and do the NEOUCOM thing too.Another daughter walked on at Can't for basketball and found the basketball/academic regime very demanding.

My wife also did the BS/MD thing and she had no time for much other than school. Maybe if we had a 4-yr program they could do sports?

If we offer a 2-year accelerated program, why not offer a 4-year program as well? We already have the curriculum, the facilities, and the professors
My wife just filled me in that apparently there is one, but by doing the 4-yr program you are not eligible for the automatic enrollment into NEOUCOM and would have to apply there for admission after you graduate (or you could go elsewhere for your MD I suppose).

Good luck to him in figuring out what he wants to do and doing a premed major. If JD goes, we will lose some kids that he recruited but the reality also is for any kid going to a non top 20 program which would be virtually any non BCS team and any BCS team not in the top 3-4 of their league, the coach staying over 5 years is under 25%. If he goes to CMU, Butch Jones is going to move on in the next year or two and Lynch will probably get fired at IU in another year. Again, he has a lot of other things to consider, but if the coach makes up a big part of where to go, the chances of the guy who recruited him being there for all 4 or 5 years is remote.

/RantI also love (read hate) the ego stroking and manipulation of these kids that goes on in the recruiting game. That kid's high school coach talking openly about some recruiter/snake-oil-salesman describing this impressionable high school kid as an "all Big-Ten linebacker" as the kid walks down the hall? Ridiculous. My impression is that he somehow believes that Akron is small time, not really so hot for his superstar player/prospect.Hey coach, you think that kind of talk does anything good for that kid? You also have to love local yocal high school football coaches talking about their "prospects" (who are high school kids with teenage brains) the way they do. I surely love watching football but man do I hate the "making of the sausage." /Rant off
