Notre Dame's Rob Ianello

Akron1

I'm afraid a guy with only big "name" school experience would be willing to bolt after just a season or two if another offer came along.
That would mean the guy won a ton of games for the Zips. I could handle that.
I dream of the day when our FB program is as big and reliable a stepping stone as our AD chair appears to be.Go Rob! Win your a$$ off and be the obvious choice for ND when Edsell is canned in 2014.Go Zips!!!

I am pretty happyWe are effectively getting the best coach left on ND's staff. Say what you want about Notre Dame, but the school is under immense pressure to win. We want people who had that pressure. Akron is in a good position to take a chance. It is like betting on a gut-shot straight draw after the flop. Go all in and bring up the pressure. Chances are good that you get a nice pay off. I am sad that we are not getting Mangino... i was looking forward to this for a few years.baby-mangino.jpg

my two cents .... a really dumb, bad hire.Racking my brain trying to remember Mike ??????? former head men's basketball coach at ClevelandState. He was hired because he was a "great" recruiter at Michigan. Frankly, whether its Michiganor Notre Dame, the sell is a whole lot easier than at most schools. If Akron just had to have a new head coach with no HC experience there is a great one in Cowlumbus. His name is Luke Fickel. And, I'll bet my last dime Luke will succeed where ever he hooks up.As it has been pointed out numerous times over the years, a three star kid will get a four star ratingif he signs with a mega-school and a two star rating if he signs with a MAC or WAC school. That'sjust how it is.

What difference does the star ratings make again, and why is that a concern. His results with players were proven on the field, Jeff Samardzija, Clausen, Tate, etc, his players were developed and became big time guys. I saw Clausen as a freshman, against Penn State looking like Matt Rodgers vs Indiana, and saw how he progressed. I saw Samardzija go from a baseball layer to a #1 receiver, and Tate become a playmaker after being a rb. Anyone seen Owen Daniels for the Texans, the guy is a beast and puts up #1 receiver type numbers, Ianello was responsible for a lot of that success. I like the hire, I think Nicely will like the hire, and if Powlus does in fact come here then he has had the experience or high expectations, and working with two great QBs while coaching at ND, besides the opportunity to work with one of the best offensive coaches in the game.

I'm going to get to my seats at the Info early a couple of years from now (maybe even mid-year next year?) so I can listen intently for the bells and sirens each time a former Zips fan/season ticket holder walks through one of the gates.LOVE the passion but I wish some on the board would give Wistrcil (3 months on the job) and now Ianello (... not even here yet) a little more (or a lot) benefit of the doubt.Welcome to Akron, Rob and Family! GO ZIPS!!!

UA could let Ianello go to San Jose State, see how he does as a head coach in a conference dominated by Boise State, and then try to get him if he's successful.Oops, if he's successful against Boise State, then the bigger schools would want him and UA would be out of the running. One chance to roll the dice on a reasonably young, up and coming assistant who has an outstanding record of recruiting and coaching offense and is well thought of by many in the business of college football coaching. There are no sure winners coming to UA. Anyone applying for the UA job will be a roll of the dice. They're all getting trashed by a bunch of fans on some sports forum somewhere.Decide quick or you lose this one as he will be in demand.

I think that he should do fine. With how things have been going in Akron the past few seasons, we were never going to get Urban Meyer. No, he doesn't have any head coaching experience (I'll also throw in that according to his bio, he didn't play in college). But, he's worked at three BCS schools, has had a lot of great recruiting classes and most of those classes have come from nabbing Midwestern players. If you want to give credit to Charlie Weis for ND's offense, go ahead. I'd think that Ianello helped get points on the board too. He also did a pretty good job coaching Golden Tate into a star receiver.

It really is interesting to go back and read the reactions when Ianello's hiring was first announced. Has anybody changed their tune?

"We have the pieces in place to be successful immediately,'" the AD said after he fired Brookhart. "This is not a rebuilding job. The cupboard is full."

what I said... I have nothing to change yet...

I love the recruiting prowess, but no HC experience, or even as a high level coordinator makes me nervous. If he is the pick, I'd hope that a staff is put together that compensates for this.

I am normally the one saying that a coach needs at least 4 years to put up or shut up... where all of the former coach's players are gone and he has also had enough time to establish his culture. I was sticking up for JD several years ago when people were calling for his head. I wasn't saying that I believed in him and he didn't have enough time, I was just saying that there was a chance that he didn't have enough time. Well, he got his time and failed.

However, if we go 0-12, particularly after the statements like you posted above, Zach, I will not be as patient as understanding. Obviously, as a fan, I don't matter, but if I am normally a wait and see guy, and I can't wait and see, this is a very bad omen for Ianello.

If those guys were saying that the cupboard was full in order to sell a few more tickets, they should have more foresight about all of the lost ticket sales as soon as people realized the product wasn't there.

check page 75 of the program for the Syracuse game...coach 'Ron' Ianello is in his first year...thats the problem...anyway the coach is not going away this year or next...we may not have agreed with the hire but he will get his chance over the next 2 years at least...will the 'light come on' sooner than later?...this coach is still trying to figure out what he has on the field and who can/will play in his system...it is obvious that some players who have been here for a while are not making the adjustment yet...i look at a couple guys on the defensive and offensive lines for example..and obviously the qb and his receivers are not in sync with the new system...so lets go to the games and hope that bright light at the end of the tunnel is not a train and that the tunnel is shorter than it looks...
