Dr Z
...per Rasor.Former Zips linebacker coach Vince Okruch.....Vs.....Current Illini defensive backs coach and co defensive coordinator Curt Mallory. . . . .. . . . .
zff
Kind of ironic that Mallory replaced Okruch at Illini.
skip-zip
I'm only wondering why a current defensive coordinator at a Big 11 school would consider leaving to go to a MAC school?
Zip Watcher
Ianello must have gotten some concessions from the AD on the assistants pool. Powlus is going from position coach at ND to position coach @ UA. The OC has been a coordinator @ BCS & ND levels before.Used to be a guy was a position coach somewhere and came the UA to be a coordinator (or HC). Something this time seems different to me.Go Zips! GP1
Is Okruch a distant relative of Groucho Marx?
zff
his is from an article in the Plain Dealer after Ianello was hired.SourceIanello will become the second Notre Dame football coach to be head man for the Zips, following in the footsteps of Gerry Faust (43-53-3, 1986-1994). According to Wistrcill, Ianello will make $375,000 a year on his initial five-year pact and will have $800,000 at his disposal to hire a staff. That would be a bit of a surprise to Akron president Luis Proenza, who said he hadn't tallied Ianello's total package up yet. "But I don't think it's at that level," Proenza said. Zip Watcher
Thanks ZFF .. had forgotten about that.Do we know what the staff pool was the last couple of years under JD?
johnnyzip84
If this is true, this is turning into a VERY interesting story. I have a buddy who is a huge Illini fan. He thinks the only reason Okruch left Illinois was a big personality conflict with everyone's favorite ADD head coach, the Zooker himself. This guy has also complained bitterly about the "co-defensive coordinator" situation they had in 2009. What does it say when UI ends up trying to replace Vince with TWO guys?? I've been a big proponent of keeping Vince around from the beginning. I'd be THRILLED if he was named the DC!!! Come on, Rob. Pull the trigger. Besides, Mallory will give you some competition in the "youthful coach" race. You can't let that happen. While I pull for Vince, Mallory has a interesting angle as well. The son of longtime MAC/Indiana head coach Bill Mallory is definitely aware of what it takes to win in the MAC. All of these "second generation" coaches are starting to make my head spin. ZachTheZip
Okruch provides some continuity for the defense. Continuity is very important to a coaching staff. We'll have to wait a bit longer, but hopefully the staff is complete by the end of next week. zff
I found this link on USA Today. Coach's SalaryIt shows a total of $647,428 for the Zips Assistant Coaches. I am not sure of the time frame.

How many times have we said here that UA needs to finish the job, spend what it takes to bring in the right people and build this program? I really, really like what I hear so far about these hires. Some of these coaches bring name recognition and credibility to the UA campus. That's got to help when it comes to recruiting, and hopefully they'll gel into great X and O guys too.Very exciting so far this offseason. ZachTheZip
I think the reason that we haven't heard an announcement yet is because Curt Mallory is in the running for the CMU head coaching job.
