Spin
Why doesn't Akron have a TV channel? They have the studios, they have the programs. They have the distance learning network. Yet all they do with the TV equipment is burn a few programs now and then for the internet.Lorain County Community College has a TV channel on the local cable companies. They use it for classes that you can take at home, and a bunch of other stuff.UA sports are starved for exposure. There are a lot more Baldwin Wallace games televised than Zips. BALDWIN WALLACE. They have 4500 students!!! And I can sit and watch the Yellow Jackets play almost every week. But not the major campus 12 miles away. Hell we can't even get a radio signal from 1350 here... Heck I can watch about 12 different sports from the local HIGH SCHOOL. But the Zips? Gotta mark down on the calendar the precious few games that will be televised, then go through the alphabet soup of networks to find it when they get moved.Looking at just the sports programs, they get exposure, build up a different fanbase, and it would help some with recruiting in our backyard. They could advertise upcoming games, advertise the Team Shop, well maybe not advertise the Team Shop. Even sell advertising spots.I know there must be an obvious reason they don't have one, but I'm missing it.
ZachTheZip
A TV channel is expensive. I'd settle for a quality internet feed.
Let'sGoZips94
A TV channel is expensive. I'd settle for a quality internet feed.Plus you can get internet feed pretty much anywhere. I like that.
Valpo Zip
We have a school of communication. Those students would love to produce, direct, and create programs. I work for a 3500 student university and we have our shows produced by students.
Akron1
I would love to see a weekly show featuring Zip's Football and Men's Basketball on STO or FSN produced by The U of A.
xu9697
I would love to see a weekly show featuring Zip's Football and Men's Basketball on STO or FSN produced by The U of A.I really hoped that STO was going to be more involved with the MAC, and most specifically Akron and Can't (necessary evil, I know). That channel, by and large, has been a disappointment.Instead of trying to create a channel, UA and the MAC (based in Cleveland for heaven's sake!!) should start working more with STO to build some programming. Viewing habits developed with people watching cleveland stations alone. Now the few akron stations focus on cleveland viewers and ignore their city of license. Unfortunate, when you see little youngstown with 5 tv stations of its own!!
zipfan85
just throwing it out there, they are showing the Toledo vs. Ball State game on FSN right now. I'm just wondering if FSN is at least making an attempt to show more MAC games.

Don't know why they picked what might be the worst two teams in the country for this week's game, but it is what it is.Our home game with EMU, and the road game at Ball State will be shown on FS Ohio. Jake
Are we talking about the city of Akron having a TV station or The University of Akron having a TV station? There is a big difference. Isn't UA still a part of a consortuim with Can't State and YSU on PBS? I'm all for a UA TV station. The city has tried it too many times and it was a bust any way you look at it. UATV would have to be more regional with a broad programming format like WCan't State - Radio is, if it wants to be accepted and productive. It can't just focus on Akron, Ohio or UA sports. That said, I think it could give UA's athletics and UA as a whole a good boost in exposure and credibility.
Spin
Just the university. It doesn't really matter for the city to have one, as almost everyone has cable anyway, and the Cleveland news programs have stepped up their Akron-Canton coverage. Especially with the end of channel 23 news about 15 years ago.Why can a Lorain County Community College student sit at home and watch class on their TV but we can't? Are they that much more technically advanced at LCCC? Is Elyria that much further advanced than Akron? Why can I sit and watch Baldwin Wallace D3 sports, if I ever got the urge to watch BW sports, EVERY WEEK but only get a handful of Akron games all year? Not to mention the local high school sports? High school volleyball is on right now... There's a lot the U could do with a TV station. And they have the degree programs and the studios to run it. Not to mention several distance learning studios.IMHO the U and the sports programs are missing out.
zen
...and the kewl thing about it is that you wouldn't even need a dedicated tower with a huge amp. The big investment is the fact that you got to conform to the new FCC high def broadcasting, and so you can't just use old equipment for that. But the point is to get a slot on all of the regional cable and satellite spectrums, because that's what most people are using anyway. Then you can use students to fill most of the broadcast time. Good for the university, good for the students who want into TV, good for getting our athletics on TV, and good for the community.
infofan
Hi def is Not required by FCC. Digital broadcast is but only at 480i, not the 1080 used by most network affiliates. The only opportunity for a local channel lies in the fact that most broadcasters use 4 or 5 sub-channels. Even 17,23, 47, and 49locally. You dont get them over cable or satellite but over the air. Soon channel 24- a local repeater channel for ch 19 out of Shaker Hts(CLEVELAND) will start broadcasting from channel 23's tower in west Akron (to reach areas where ch 19s digital is Not reaching in southern summit/stark). Someday maybe they will program one of these subchannels with local content.
ziptrumpet87
Is channel 3 still doing the "23 news" on TW cable? It would be nice if they could run that over 3.2 in stead of the weather radar only. I'd watch it!
