Zips vs. flushes

I don't care about soccer...but they win and never give up.
That is the most true thing ever stated on Zipsnation. When i think about a team i'm proud of i think of the Soccer team from last season. If the mens bball team had HALF the heart and put out HALF the effort that those guys put out last season we would have beaten Can't easily on Saturday.I may put Soccer in 3rd place in terms of importance, but those players are the best role models this university has...I know 100% of you agree as well.
1) I think our basketball team plays with plenty of heart and effort.2) The soccer team has more success than the basketball team because they also have more talent than most of the teams they face. Our basketball team doesn't have the same advantage going into many of their contests.
If you think they play with "plenty of heart and effort" you must not be watching the same game. On saturday as well as the previous sunday i saw Brett McKnight walking back on defense/on fast breaks, i saw Humpty doing the same as well as attempting to be the whole team on offense with wide open teammates all around him, i saw Darryl Roberts doing much of the same. There were others you could see doing it as well but not as much as those 3. You watch those last 3 games and you only see 3 people playing with any heart: Steve McNees, Zeke Marshall, Jimmy Conyers....Chris McKnight was mostly there the last three games but it doesn't last the entire game.

As much as we're disappointed with the Zips basketball team for not consistently playing up to their full capabilities, at least there is progress over last season's team. After the first round of the MAC East last year, the Zips were 2-3 in conference play and 10-8 overall. This year's team has as much potential to grow from this point in the season as last year's team did at the same point.
They shouldn't have to "grow", as you mentioned they already did last season! They dont have their heads in the game...it's very apparent.
Maybe I wasn't clear. By "grow" I meant improve in all areas, including focus and consistency. No individual and no team is good enough that they should ever give up on trying to improve. Continuous improvement is a key factor in separating winners from losers in sports, business and life in general. If I thought the Zips coaching staff and players didn't believe in continuous improvement, I'd throw away my season tickets and look for another team to follow.I have no connection to UA or its sports teams. I wasn't born and raised in the Akron area, and I didn't attend UA. My interest in the UA basketball team is purely based on my lifelong appreciation for basketball and the fact that I now live in the Akron area. If the UA coaching staff and players were a bunch of losers, I'd have no interest in watching them.

Settle down folks...we beat Can't and Buffalo, which we should be able to, at home and we'll be fine.
It's Ken+, if your not passionate about losing to Ken+, how in the heck....never mind.Sometimes it's the way a team can lose that upsets a fan. We went from having a chance of winning, to getting embarrassed.
I just got back from Arizona and I wanted to see the thoughts about the drubbing we took Saturday. I see the usual growers and apologists mixed in with the usual upset fan after a game, but as he often does, DrZ sums it up in a short sentence.By now we should all understand that divisional road games are difficult to win. Losing one should not be a surprise against a good team. Getting your ass kicked is another story. I left my hotel to get something to eat and the score was 35-35 at half....I was feeling good. Then I saw the beat down we were taking and I could not believe it. That was most upsetting. One thing I notice on the board though is there is not much outrage at the loss. Getting your ass kicked by Ken+ is something to be extremely upset about. I don't think that is a good thing because it could show people are starting to tune the team out. The Zips need to do someting to get people really excited about the program. Joe Akron loves when the Zips lose like they did because it gives him another reason not to attend a game.

Nik, Z, and Nitro seemed like they were pumped to play in this game. The rest of the team looked like they didn't care to be there. Ken+ played defense like I wish we could.....Calling MAC player of the week....hello....hello....?
I wholeheartedly agree with every part of this statement. But I'll wager everything I have that the outcome on March 5th is entirely different; as well as the mac tourney. I just have that deep down gut feeling that Akron Basketball is gonna finish everything the right way this year. :moon:
I agree. And on March 5th, let's hope the AK rowdies use some originality and wit and not something on the order of Can't State SUCKS or regurgitate, "why so quiet?" We're counting on you AK rowdies. You help make a difference.
Today wasn't original enough for you? We had 30+ tickets in the middle of their reserved seats and kicked about 15 people out of their seats who were sitting in them when we all went down a few minutes into the game. You should have seen the faces of the usher and cop who tried to stop us and realized we had every right to be there.
Apples and oranges but,Good for you! Gooo Zips and AK Rowdies!!!

With all due respect, I think the reason why we see all this disintegration between UA football, Soccer and Basketball is that many of those on this site don't see the forrest for the trees by realizing that being a Zips fan is about being a fan of The University of Akron. If you care about your university, then you'd have a more macro passion for its Athletics department and campus as a whole. If more fans supported the big picture, I think we'd have a better image and results all the way around.

You know, as someone who attended UA in the last century (and NOT the END of the Century, closer to the middle) and now lives in New York, it is really hard to follow UA football lately. I mean they were HORRIBLE, and when the team is that bad, and has no chance of any postseason anything, it just is not interesting.I don't follow soccer. Good for the team that they came so close, I just can't personally get interested in soccer. I could be a big football fan (have not missed a Giants game in over 30 years), but damn it, at least be competitive to hold some interest. For UA, even back in the day, BBall was THE sport. My freshman year was right after the Turner/Don Williams days, and it was a "rebuilding" year. We were awful. There was not a shot clock as I recall, and our strategy was to stall and win a 2-0 game. Of course, that never worked. But the next year, we got Len Paul and the place ROCKED. Memorial Hall used to be standing room only. I remember watching games while standing on the court near the exits by the far basket. It was easy to get hooked on UA B Ball in those days. But when you speak of the big picture, the big picture is FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL. Nothing against the other athletes, but those are the MONEY SPORTS in college. Bottom line, field competitive Football and Basketball teams and you will get fans.As always, YMMV
