ZachTheZip Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 If you were wondering where Zips go to play soccer in the offseason, here is the answer: The Michigan Bucks of the USL's Premier Development League. All three U-20 players, along with Ben Speas and Scott Caldwell are playing for the Bucks. They are essentially playing for the Columbus Crew's minor league team. http://www.buckssoccer.com/ They're really praising Akron in the article on the front page of their website. You can watch them play today at 7:00 at Pinnacle Sports in Medina. It's the only time they're in town this season. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted May 19, 2010 Author Report Posted May 19, 2010 Also of note, former Zips Chris Korb and Stefan Ostergren and current Zips players Darlington Nagbe, Matt Dagilis, and Anthony Ponikvar will be playing for the Cleveland Internationals in the game tonight. Quote

So what is the Crew/MLS giving to the PDL to have their logo on the Michigan team's website? I can't find anything describing the relationship. Quote

I'd call it a farm team like the minor leagues in baseball. Quote

Isn't Korb still with the Zips? I'm pretty sure he's a senior this coming year. Quote

Dr Z Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Individual season tickets to all eight regular season home games are only $49 and will be limited to the first 100 applications!?!?!?! Quote
ZachTheZip Posted May 20, 2010 Author Report Posted May 20, 2010 Individual season tickets to all eight regular season home games are only $49 and will be limited to the first 100 applications!?!?!?! They don't need to make much money when they don't have to pay the players. And if their home field is anything like Pinnacle Sports, 100 fans would be pushing max capacity. Quote

Maybe these players have some "special opportunities" when it comes MLS Superdraft time? I doubt it, depending on the MLS' new rules regarding reserve rights to academy players. But the Bucks are not exactly part of the Crew Youth Academy. I'll look, but I bet there is no mention of the Michigan team on the Crew web site. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted May 20, 2010 Author Report Posted May 20, 2010 Maybe it's just a way to get prospects together to be evaluated for the draft easily. Quote

The Zips played a Spring Game at the Buck's "home field"...Ultimate Soccer Arenas. It's a great indoor facility. I can't find a quote of the capacity, but from what I remember, I would say it seats at least as many as UA's Stile Field House. BTW Zach...THANKS for this information! Given the long, dismal summer of Indians baseball and the early Cavs' exit from the NBA Playoffs, I can't wait to watch the Zips. A drive to Pontiac, MI on June 5th (if that's where the game is played...currently TBD location) would help fill my need to watch our Men's Soccer Zips. Quote
