Captain Kangaroo Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 * Nice to get the game on Comcast. What a treat! * The game announcers were among the best informed and objective I've ever heard from a opponent's crew. Excellent game call. * The yellow "Moving A" logo for the Zips score??!! Someone get Comcast the new Roo!!! * That was probably the best game the Zips have played against a "major" opponent in 10 years. The fianal score was very deceiving. * Travis' foul trouble was crippling. Although the fouls were a little ticky-tack, they were not outrageous. Someone needs to tell Rome that he is much more valuable to us on the floor than on the bench. * Preston played an awesome game. With Rome out he stepped up his game big-time. Good defense and excellent shooting. * Although Cal was beaten by EMU, they were severely depled by injury in that game. They were full strength vs. the Zips. Powe is a big time player. * Futch played very well in Rome's absence too. Hit some FT's. * Dials was awesome in the first half. One announcer was so impressed with his play he stated "I'm officially declaring myself west coast President of the Nick Dials Fan Club." Dials offensive firepower and defensive tenacity are very reminicent of a soph/junior Jamie Bosley. * Joyce had a solid game. He has the edge over Bubba for PT in my book. * Again, Bubba got shut down. He really needs to work harder for his shot, pick up his defense and quit qriping to the refs while the action is moving to the other end of the court. Bubba is killer when he's bombing the treys, but if he's not he's a liability. * Quade needs to get some sort of an offensive game going on. He looks utterly lost when he gets the ball in the low post. If I were KD, I would bring in Ryan Andrick to give Quade some pointers on how a skinny freshman can turn into a solid post player with a Kevin McHale-esque over/under move. * Peterson had a twitch of Tarver in him. He took a couple shots vs Cal that were very ill-advised. We need DP's offense, but 3-pointers with 30 seconds left on the shot clock played right into Cal's hands. In general, the Zips were filling it up...but there was a hole in the bucket. The hole was Travis. We can't beat a team like Cal without Rome. Here's hoping he plays smarter this week against Louisville. Quote
zipsbandman Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I agree that we played a decent game, and we never gave in even when half of our team was in foul trouble. There were many opportunities for Cal to run away with this one. We got some outstanding shooters on this team. I don't see a lot of teams beating us on the perimeter. One major problem on this team that will hurt us is size. I keep saying this over and over. KD needs to recruit some more post players. Cal physically dominated us even though we shot the ball better. That had a lot to do with the foul trouble. Our guys down low tried blocking shots but instead ended up fouling because our opponent was simply bigger and stronger. We have three leginimate guys in the paint in Travis, Futch, and Preston. That's it. Where is the depth? Milum got manhandled. Linhart is inexperienced, and I question his athleticism. Wood decided to take the offseason off. Louisville is going to kill us inside, and I wouldn't be suprised to see us in foul trouble there early on too. Quote
RACER Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 really can't blame jd for rome foul trouble, and wood being out. i sure he expected to play cal with those guys in the lineup. emu beat cal without their big man.i did not watch the game(listened to it) but 33 to 8 free throw attempts? Captain Kangaroo Posted December 7, 2005 Author Report Posted December 7, 2005 33 to 8 free throw attempts? That's what happens when one team hoists a bunch of 3's and the other bangs it inside. The refs weren't all that bad. Quote
maggiemoo Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 I guess I'd have to disagree on that last statement. 33 to 8 and the refs weren't that bad? The announcers on the radio, players on the team, and fans from Cal. all said that it was the worst reffed game they had ever seen. It's pretty bad when you got your own fans laughing at the absurdity of the calls going their way. Then you have the cal players telling the Akron players during the game that "you should've expected this". A little too obvious there. Regardless, I guess Akron hung in there pretty good. Hopefully they'll have a good game and Louisville will have a bad one Saturday. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted December 7, 2005 Author Report Posted December 7, 2005 33 to 8 and the refs weren't that bad? I watched the entire game and I'm as big a Zips fan as they come. Trust me, the refs were not that bad. If French and Dunn said they were bad...thay say that every game. We took a ton of outside shots (since Travis was out, we had no choice). You don't draw fouls from 20 feet out. Cal frequently shot from inside the paint and got the calls. IMO Travis fouled out because he played wrecklessly. After the first foul or two he should have realized how the game was being called. He never adjusted, and picked up 5 of the quickest fouls I've ever seen. Quote
RACER Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 im glad to see the free throw practice cal had against akron really helped them today against kansas. Quote
