GoZips
Like any number of you, I ponder and worry that coach Porter might fly the coup. He protests that he is here to stay. I sure hope so. But, where, oh where, is that blond AMPI streak he promised us at the send off party? That should help hinder job interviews. Grasping at straws here. Curious, I did a google search on Ken Lolla + NC State and came up with the following items. NC Fan Board On Looking For A Nw Soccer Coach - Not Good News Great Older SI Article on Caleb No way on Earth do any of us want Caleb out of Akron. Hey, Coach, Akron does not get hurricanes. And it still snows in Raleigh. Last minute edit: NC State board sez "Porter's out of the picture."
ZachTheZip
Put your minds at ease. UA extends coach Porter's contract through 2020. I think the USMNT will come calling before then, but not so soon that he won't have plenty of opportunities to establish a Soccer dynasty. Also, thanks to Mr. Wistrcill and Dr. Proenza for supporting the program the way they have.

If this doesn't shut up the naysayers who think Porter is headed for "greener pastures", then I don't know what will. I think we can all rest assured that Porter has found his greener pasture and he's not going anywhere.
RowdyZip
Fantastic news. Glad to have guys like Caleb and KD buck the trend...now for that pesky American Football...
jem101
Wistricill may not have hired Porter, but for his efforts to keep him:

ZachTheZip
Wow. As a part of his new contract, Coach Porter has received a 59% raise. He now makes $270k. That has to be one of the very top college soccer coaching contracts in the country.

That has to be one of the very top college soccer coaching contracts in the country. This is an amazing -- and valuable statement: The university also agreed to devote $80,000 ''in additional compensation'' to help him help UA President Luis Proenza promote the university ''locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.'' Probably -- no, surely that's an understatement (sorry Shirley) -- Caleb is now the most famous person associated with the university, and his notoriety (let's wait a bit before calling it "fame") provides a platform to not only promote the university, but to increase it's global presence. His time and energy are going to be overtaxed by all the requests for his presence, but his employer is, The University of Akron. Or for those who prefer, Akron U. RootforRoo44
Btw on that Ohio.com article.... Speaking of people claiming that "Akron U" isn't used a derogatory term: Fred Posted 06:11 PM, 12/20/2010 C`mon Akron U. Making that kind of money? With Akron raising tuition and fees? Geesh! If any of you read Ohio.com's comments, then i'm sure you've noticed "Fred" trolling around everywhere knocking UA for everything he can. He like most haters of UA use it as a negative term. So there DaveinGreen, you've at least seen/heard it once
Zip Watcher
If it wasn't before, this has to make him the best compensated (base comp) coach in the NCAA, doesn't it? Not sure how the camps are going up here .. but they've got to be a boon for the program and CP pretty soon here too. I had read somewhere that that's where the money was for Yeagley, et al. at the big programs. Something I bet Zach has his hands on pretty quickly here (in all seriousness, I'd like to know): how many FB & BB head coaches in the MAC does Caleb out earn now? We all know he out performs every one of them .. how does he stack up against all MAC head coaches. I hope pretty well. Go Zips!

I don't know about basketball, but a few weeks ago I found the MAC football coaching salaries posted by USA Today. Keep in mind that Can't's new coach will make $300k and the other new MAC coaches being hired this winter will likely also receive a higher salary than their predecessors. Al Golden $513,867 Frank Solich $458,300 Rob Ianello $375,000 Bill Cubit $375,000 Tim Beckman $370,000 Stan Parrish $350,000 Dan Enos $350,000 Jerry Kill $346,812 Jeff Quinn $338,000 Ron English $315,000 Michael Haywood $300,000 Dave Clawson $205,000 Doug Martin $190,000 Normally basketball coaches receive less than football coaches in the FBS, so I think Caleb Porter would be in the upper half of MAC basketball coaches as far as salary. Also, as of 2007, the average MLS head coaching salary was $250k. It's likely gone up since then, but it's difficult to know how much. UAZipster0305
We will likely never be competitive for National Championships in the other three big notoriety sports (Football and Men's and Woman's BB) because of the BCS establishment. However, the growing popularity of soccer and our players playing on the USMNT and throughout the world will make the respect and dignity achieved through Coach Porter's success worth every penny. We are the new soccer establishment. Here's to dominant soccer, National Championships, All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, and one of the best coaches in the country in any sport! jem101
According to Rasor, there is a $200,000 penalty if Porter leaves in the next three years and a $150,000 penalty if he leaves prematurely after that. Also on Rasor's blog was the terms sheet that Ohio.com gained access to through a public records request. That terms sheet is here.
