RootforRoo44
Want the women's team to succeed? Go to the games and cheer and be loud. How good would our men's team be if they played in front of 200 people? They would still be a very good team but I think our home field advantage helped push them over the edge. Just look at which side the large majority of goals were scored is on. Go to the games. A large crowd inspires the team to perform better and intimidates the opponents. It helps sell the program to better recruits. And it creates an atmosphere that draws in even more fans over time. Go to the games. Couldn't agree more. And i bet you every single one of those players on our CHAMPIONSHIP team would agree. The 12th man for UA Soccer is huge. If people really like soccer as much as they are now saying, it shouldn't be a problem to come out and support the women's team.

I think this past season there was a package deal where you could pay $20 on top of your Men's Soccer season tix and you would get Women's soccer season tix as well. It's absolutely worth it. No offense (and I know there will be offense taken), but I like soccer and that's why I won't go see the women's team.
mes102
No offense (and I know there will be offense taken), but I like soccer and that's why I won't go see the women's team. And no offense, but I think this is exactly what Geno Auriemma was talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGa1O1gZ6cQ...feature=related At least check this out if ur not going to try to go. But just to let you know, the 4 biggest home crowds of the year for women's soccer was Can't State, Buffalo, Illinois State, and Ball State(DH with men's), with a combined aggregate score of 11-2...they were 1-4 in the other 5 home games on the year with an aggreagate score of 5-8. It's okay...I understand I'm one of the only few on this board that loves THE SPORT as one of my top two favorites(basketball is my love/passion). I know that all the rest of you are just along for the ride, and no matter what happens, I'll be there. You have to remember, this was only the 10th season of women's soccer. Think about how many years men's soccer has been around at Akron. Give it some time...Coach Pfau is trying to build a nice foundation for the program. He's doing well, and if you watched the video and actually went to a couple games(and easy to hear what he said since there's not many people that go to games), you would know that he likes to play the attractive style as well. But he has to get the players to execute that style. I think it's improving every year. This year the team had some injury issues(especially in that Toledo game thanks to the officials who didn;t do their jobs)... I love this sport, but most of all, I am a student of Akron and when I graduate from Akron, I will still come back to watch the great sport of futbol, whether is be men's OR women's... Seriously though, I just want to say that this isn't towards meatwad...It's towards everyone that is on the ZN.O board and ones that just read this board. He just brought it up and I know I'm bias being a high school girls basketball coach, but it's very difficult for me to see gender difference on deciding to go or not. When I decide to go watch, it's not "what gender is playing?" "it's what level and what sport is going on tonight?" That's just me and I know people are going to fire right back, and I'll take it...but I just want to tell meatwad that this isn't directed towards just him... UAZipster0305
Great responses, Z.I.P. and sportsfan. I wasn't intending to suggest that we oust Coach Pfau at all. No doubt the woman's program is greatly improved. I was merely wondering how much success on the men's side could benefit the woman, and if Coach Pfau were to leave or no longer make progress, could/would Coach Porter translate everything he has done on the men's side to the women's? I was previously unaware of the coach at Portland doing the same thing, but it does provide an excellent precedent for what I was suggesting. I don't buy the argument that X BCS school has these grand facilities, and we can't compete. I have been to both UNC and Lee Jackson Field and ours is a much nicer stadium. Say what you will about the lockerroom facilities (http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/facilities/unc-mccaskill-soccercenter.html), but UNC is the quintessential woman's soccer program (with 20 of 28 National Championships) and their men have the same advantage yet our current program is superior. We can compete at the highest level of woman's soccer if the administration recognizes these things and makes them a priority. Of all the BCS programs with beautiful facilities, only UNC (20), George Mason (1), Notre Dame (3), Florida, Santa Clara, Portland (2), and USC have ever even won the National Championship. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Women%27s_Soccer_Championship). To me, this lack of parity means that regularly making the NCAA Tournament and cracking the Top 25 is possible within 5 years; however, becoming one of the truly elite top 5 to 10 programs on an annual basis will be much more difficult for the woman than it was for the men. Go Zips! P.S. I love how the moderators have renamed the soccer forum, "Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer."
bobbyake
Imagine if Caleb Porter helped the Woman's team every now and then with recruiting. I say Akron should pay Caleb Porter at least 500k a year and make him the king of Akron Athletics. here's a list I found on woman's recruiting: List of Woman's College Recruits. I was wondering why Kaylee Semelsberger is listed for Alabama? Shouldn't she be going to Akron?? she's from Akron and seems to love the city

That is some good recruiting for a team that has no history!!! Also, sending out a congrats to Ashley Hughes - a current sophmore on the Lady Zips team - she has been called into ID camp!! Zipmeister
Let's face it; the University has dropped the ball. The University could support Zach's suggestion that more people attend games and also improve classroom performance by requiring any student who does poorly in a class to attend a a certain number of women's soccer games. Perhaps the following schedule would work: For each class a student receives a D, the student must attend 2 women's home games, For each class a student receives an F, the student must attend 4 women's home games. Although I would not be opposed to either more severe penalties, or adding penalty categories.
