Zips Spring Trip

Akron wins 3-0 over Rayo Vellacano reserves. Mattocks with 2 goals, and Tulloch with the third.

A good start, I think.

For those who can speak/read Spanish:

Amistoso Combinado Juvenil Rayo vs Akron

Aparentemente, perdone me, it appears this was Rayo Vallecano's youth academy (Juvenil) rather than their senior reserve squad per the story. Is that the case? The table on la izquierda de la pagina, left side shows RV in first -- but not sure if that's who we played. Alguien tienen otras ideas? Mi Espanol leyendo no es demasiado bueno. :D

Edit: Reading Caleb's Journal, I see that they (Rayo Vallecano) play a majority of U-18s on the Reserve, so that must be why it's called Combinado Juvenil. Appears Rayo will be back in La Liga next season. Hopefully not at the expense of good clubs like Deportivo or Real Sociedad. You can see I favor los extranjeros in the non-Spanish-speaking provinces (Galicia, Pais Basco, etc).

From what Coach Porter said it was mostly U18 kids. U18's in Development Academy can be born as early as 92, not sure of the cut off over there. Would have been cool to see the result with the full freshman class playing.

"Tomorrow we will watch Real Madrid vs Lyon in a champions league match so the players will be able to compare first hand."

Will they be watching it on television or actually attending the match? If attending, I'm so jealous, cheer on Lyonnais boys! 2nd Leg 1-1 Aggregate

The match (second leg, I believe) will be at Fernando Bernabeu Estadio in Madrid. Therefore, if attending in person, I strongly recommend not rooting against the Merengues. Unless the lads are wearing body armour (not Underarmour).

I believe the Zips will be attending in person and not watching on TV, given the following passages from Caleb:

In the evening, we travelled as a team to Getafe to watch a La Liga match (spanish first division) Getafe CF vs Athletic Bilbao. The match was at the Coliseum, which is the home stadium for Getafe. It was one of the smaller stadiums in La Liga (att. 17,000). Getafe is middle of the table and Athletic is currently fifth, so the match featured two very solid teams. The game was played in a constant down pour which made for a sloppier game than probably normal.

The game started with what you would expect out of a spanish team with both teams looking to build and possess the ball but then I was suprised with how direct the teams played once it started to rain. It was good for our players to see that conditions can dictate the way teams choose to play even at the highest levels. When points matter, style is important but the conditions sometimes warrant adjustments to get the result. It was a good reminder that we need to be able to change gears at times when the game calls for something different. It was also interesting to see a smaller stadium and middle tier teams in the La Liga. Now that I have attended matches at Camp Nou (home of Barcelona FC) and Santiago Bernabeu (home of Real Madrid CF), there is quite a discrepancy in the level, facilities and money the top clubs have versus some of the others. I can only imagine how interesting it is when Barcelona comes to Getafe and goes from 100,000 fans to 17,000!

Tomorrow we will watch Real Madrid vs Lyon in a champions league match so the players will be able to compare first hand.

It will be played at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu — Madrid, as you thought.

Haha, I agree, I just really like to see Lyon take down Madrid.

I don't think the Rayo players were expecting that kind of challenge from an American squad.

Coach Porter's recap of the game. I feel more knowledgeable about soccer just from having read that quick blog post. Guy knows his stuff!

Did Luke Holmes go on the Spanish trip?

No

yes

OK.

As far as I can tell, Holmes did not see action in any of the matches.

Very curious!

Sorry. I'm friends with one of the managers and he put photos from the trip on facebook. It looked like Luke was with the team but not dressed. Maybe he is injured? I'm not really sure. Either way, you are correct, he didn't play. Hopefully we will see him as well as the rest of the new guys in the coming weeks. Anyone planning on making any of the trips for Spring season?

The Rayo Vallecano team was a young reserve team and was comprised of mostly U18 kids. The were very technical and intelligent in possession – far more than college teams we see on a regular basis. Defensively, they dropped off low pressure and looked to compact the space in the middle third. Because of this, we were able to move the ball with relative ease and found good rhythm with our movement and circulation around the back four and D mid.

This paragraph speaks volumes. There is a comment to be the best and only the best no matter who and where you play.

Me and some other students will be there

I'll be there with 4 kids that I have taken to the Akron Prep Camp! We never miss a chance to see them play when they are within reasonable driving distance to S.W. Michigan, wish Akron wasn't 4 hours from us or we would be going to some games.

Spring trip photos

Stumbled upon these pics from the Real Madrid reserves game. Enjoy

Nice grab, Yaz. Those facilities look world class. Wow!

I am still waiting to get a good look #9 Diego Navarrete. Guess I will see on Saturday.

Has anyone an update on Luke Holmes?

You know -- this story says the score vs Real reserves was 1-2. The previous story says we lost 0-1 on a penalty kick. I presume someone didn't do their homework for the second story, as they also say the first match was vs "Rayo Vallencia", a non-existent club (sic...Rayo Vallecano). They could at least spell Valencia properly, couldn't they? No oranges for you! :P
